We’re jumping on this bandwagon? All right. Why not? Let’s give it a try. In case my statement does not make it clear, prior to this week, I’ve not seen this show either, Jess, so you and I will get to share this new experience together. I don’t know much going in barring it is based on a video game franchise that I’ve never played. I too don’t play video games much anymore due to rustiness (not that I was ever that good to begin with) and the hobby has become too expensive. I knew that it is post-apocalyptic in nature as you knew. I had seen spoofs of that thumbs up guy that you mentioned you’ve seen images of. And I know that this show came out I think it was days after my birthday this year given when I remember people chattering away about it. I think that was around the time of the solar eclipse, now I think about it. You have the leg up on me with the listening to the playlists, which watching this, yeah, there was the strong copyright concern for you. This show was barely on my radar until finding out you were reacting to it if I’m being honest. This week is the first time I’ve seen any of it so, again, Jess, we’ll give it a try and see how it goes. So. Okey Dokey, here we go. A solid premiere that I enjoyed sharing with you. They do a grand job of world building for the fans, and I would say, more so the laymen such as you and I. I forgot to mention that I did know about Walton Goggins who certainly is an immensely solid character actor. Knew you would be most excited for him because of Justified, which I’ve not seen, though the scuttlebutt that I’ve heard about his character in that tells me that I will LOVE that character if I ever do see the show. He and the little lady who played his little girl did fantastic with the chemistry that as you say, strong investment in them, and dread when the bombs drop. Hadn’t thought about your acrylics leaving you with a “faulty measuring system” as you called it whilst doing the thumbs up. Got a chuckle on that one. The vault sequences with Lucy were good. I projected some with Lucy getting ready and excited for the arranged marriage type deal, as I’m watching and saying, “Yeah, even in a post-apocalyptic world, I am NOT THAT goddamn desperate.” Sidenote: Praise indeed from you about the wedding floral arrangements given your former occupation. Watching this, I knew you were going to flip over Kyle MacLachlan especially given Twin Peaks, which, that also I have yet to see. He is listed as main cast in the credits so that could go either way, screentime-wise. We are unclear as to who oversees the vaults. Certainly, they don’t seem good at clocking when things are off like the one dude needing a comb like you noticed. Those raiders went to town on the vault. Is this because Hank keeps going on about Heineken and the raiders are more partial to Pabst? Loved your moments of appreciation like Lucy punching the dude in the dick, the one lady not giving a fork, and the concern for the brother. And when all is said and done, they go about painting over the blood and taking all that trauma and just stuffing it down, turning it into accomplishment or cancer like the rest of us do. And now, Lucy is off to save her dad. Love you loving Norm, by the way. Now to Maximus. (Going with Maximus given the title card, like you said.) LOVE the Johnny Cash in his scenes, whilst apologizing to you for the copyright struggle. The group he’s with does seem a cult that’s a mismatch of Starship Troopers and District 9 and infinitely SUBTLER than both films, hardly an accomplishment though that last bit is. Difficult to say if Maximus did what they accused him of or not, and it feels deliberately ambiguous to allow us to read it however we desire. Though there is the big Norman Bates red flag that gets raised higher than your eyebrows upon hearing said red flag said. Michael Cristofer was quite captivating as I presume some sort of holy man. Partway through his scene, I noted, “Wait a minute, I know this guy.” recognized Michael from his past work and as I say, found him captivating. We see Maximus is part of the sort of task force to hunt the one gentleman and his dog. Sorry that resultingly you are now greatly concerned about the dog, and I’m equally sorry that since I’ve not seen this show that I am unable to confirm nor deny about the dog. Bringing us to our third character that completes the protagonist triangle of the idealist, the cynic, and the somewhere in between, that I love how you observed that. Twas indeed a fabulous and fierce last scene with the Ghoul. That is a good word, “Ghoul”, you are correct on that, Jess. I can already tell I’m going to love Walton in this. We are unclear as to how he is somehow still alive, and I could see explanations being given or they just leave that ambiguous. I also got distracted by the one bounty hunter, saying, “Wait, is that Bubba?” One thing for sure, with the Ghoul, the negotiations were short. All in all, a solid premiere that I enjoyed sharing with you, Jess. I shall endeavor to do my best to avoid spoilers. For instance, they quite rudely have a “This season on...” sneak peek following the episode’s conclusion, which I don’t understand why that’s a thing. I left the credits on, and when that text popped up, I mildly panicked, saying, “Oh, shit! Uh. Don’t show me anything! I haven’t played any of the games for Christ’s sake!” I did skip it, so no worries. In any event, it is most fun starting a journey with you where neither of us has seen the show, so this will be fun, and I await the future reactions with great interest, Jess. Thank you for the fun reaction.

There's one particular Blue Velvet line that I'm looking forward to using down the line, so it's nice to know it'll be recognized. I actually had my heart drop a bit on hearing she's already seen Justified as it would have made for such a great reaction with her love of characters first and foremost; Elmore Leonard was always amazing at making his characters feel like they had rich, full lives that really made you invested in whether they'd get the ending they deserved.

I'm glad no one was around to hear the sound I made when this popped up. I instantly devoured this show, and then impatiently sat around waiting for all the reactors I follow to get into it. Literally the only thing I knew about the games was the time that Bethesda cheaped out on the duffel bags for a special purchase and then doxxed everyone who complained (seriously, look that story up if you haven't heard it, it's a wild ride), and while I wouldn't quite put it on the same level as Arcane in being totally friendly to newbies (there were a couple times even in this first episode where I found myself thinking "Maybe this makes more sense if you know the games"), I was able to fully get into it anyway because everything about it is just that good. I've since picked up some things by watching reactors who were fans, mainly that the story and all the characters aren't from any of the games and simply use the setting they created, and in fact you can fit the show and all the games within the same canon pretty comfortably. Most of all, I'm impressed at how well they use Hemingway's "iceberg writing," where we can imagine so much more of how this world works outside the little bubble we get to see, with maybe the best piece of it being the one wedding dress the vault has. I'd say we can now officially call Ella Purnell a major rising star after Yellowjackets, Arcane, Star Trek: Prodigy, and now this (in particular, I imagine Lucy and Jinx could have some pretty interesting conversations). And I just adore the twist on the way this setup usually goes, where the naive sheltered character among our three protagonists is also the one who's totally open and casual about sex. I'm always down for some good soundtrack dissonance, and putting a massive violent battle to the dulcet tones of South Pacific is one of the best I've ever seen. Your reaction to Kyle MacLachlan was the part I was most looking forward to, and you didn't disappoint. Absolute legend, who I just wish could have been in a better Dune movie (he's a huge fan of the new ones, by the way). Also great to see Sarita Choudhury as another fierce villain who you can already tell has more going on under the surface, just like she did so well in Blindspot. My one criticism of the episode is that Lucy's leaving the vault should have been our very first look at the post-war surface, with all those epic shots being compromised by how we've already seen so much of the Brotherhood of Steel's headquarters. But at least that story still works great on its own so that we actually don't mind sitting through Maximus' troubles after getting so invested in the vault's story. The best part is that you can truly see the show going either way as to whether he actually sabotaged Dane. And I have to point out the Power Armors, which are so convincing because THEY ACTUALLY BUILT FOUR FULLY FUNCTIONAL ONES. The armor naturally becomes CGI when it needs to hop around, but that's some insane work there. And that leaves us with the true man of the hour, Walton Goggins. I've been a fan since The Shield (and boy, does any show have a harder pitch to get people interested these days? "Root for corrupt cops, sit through completely unironic anti-vax messaging, and one of the main cast members is now an actual murderer."), and one review of the show gave the best description of him I've ever seen: "Is anyone better at delivering could-be cliche lines with such casual cool?" It's especially a treat for Justified fans to see him finally get to kill Mykelti Williamson, in a scene that tells us everything we need to know for why he's now another main character after sitting out most of the pilot. And great to see you love the word "ghoul" as much as John Mulaney.

My initial reaction to this was that it seemed layman friendly enough to non-gamers. I don’t know about Arcane, though. There were plenty of spots there that had the “Maybe this makes more sense if you know the games.” energy than here. I’d say The Last of Us had the easier time given the relative simplicity of the plot and setting. In any case, it becomes a secondary concern when I’m just taking in what I am getting from the show and focusing on that. Good comparison to Hemingway. Haven’t seen Ella Purnell in anything before though she looked familiar. I look her up, see she’s one of the starring voices in Arcane, said, “Oh, that’s her? Ok.” You mention the conversation between Lucy and Jinx would be demonstrative of her range. An interesting twist where the most sheltered and naive is the most open about sex. Always a pleasure to have excellent soundtrack dissonance, even if it gives Jess a hard time, copyright-wise. Nice to hear Kyle has loved the new Dune films. Sarita Choudhury is looking to be quite a fierce villain. The criticism you mentioned, well, if Lucy was the sole protagonist, yes, I would agree with the criticism. Seeing as we have what appears to be a protagonist triangle, the complaint is not that severe for me. And the story still works great on its own, like you said. As I mentioned, it does feel equally plausible, Maximus’s guilt or innocence about the razor blade. The most he confirms is he wanted it to happen, which conveniently sidesteps did he in fact do it or not. Nicely vague, I like that. The armor looked damned impressive. Word I’m hearing is Walton is a fan favorite on this show, and it would not surprise me. The Shield, also, I am behind on. I know I do need to see it. You mention it being a tough sell these days. True, but that’s always the thing of does a good show or story need likeable characters for you to root for in order for it to be a good show or story. Hell, we’ve had five film adaptations of the Ripliad series, plus the recent Netflix miniseries with the new presentation and portrayal of Tom. Plus, you know me and my favorite character being the Emperor. Hannibal Lecter is the very close second followed by Darth Vader. So, who the fuck am I to judge? That is a great description of Walton: “Is anyone better at delivering could-be cliché lines with such casual cool?” Like I said with Mykelti, I see him and think Bubba. The show has my curiosity with its solid start.
