"Do they even know whose car it is?", sesskasays, Reaction to "Mawdryn Undead" I do! :-) "In thirty years of soldiering, I've never encountered such destructive power as I have seen displayed here and now by the British schoolboy.", Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, "Mawdryn Undead" We LOVE seeing the Brig back again! And I was waiting for the thrill of your recognition. And that thrill was quite shrill - you could rival Nyssa (Sarah Sutton) there! "Take it from me, boy, a solid object just can't dematerialise.", Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, "Mawdryn Undead" Good on you picking up on the memory loss hint. "I know how many beans make five, Doctor, and you don't have to be a Time Lord to cope with A level maths. It may come as a surprise to you, but I also happen to like teaching.", Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, "Mawdryn Undead" But this will break your heart - it breaks my heart. Who do we know that could have been written into this story as a teacher at a school. Yes, the story was originally written to bring back Ian Chesterton! but unfortunately William Russell wasn't available. But if we can't have Ian, then the Brig is a fabulous choice. "Do you ever see anything of Jo Grant?", The Doctor, "Mawdryn Undead" Oh! The listing of our friends and the reminder of our whole Classic Who history really gets to me too. Oh and the coat a bit later. "I knew a Tegan once.", Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, "Mawdryn Undead" Having multiple time-periods with two Brigs is really, really, really fun! But this is one of the stories that causes a problem with dating the years of the Brig's original stories - did they happen in the 1970s or the 1980s? BTW: The Mara discussion between Tegan and the Doctor was carried over from the previous story (which starts with an "S" but I won't say the word) because the previous story had overrun. Mawdryn is played by David Collings. We've seen him before in "Revenge of the Cybermen" and also in The Robots of Death. He has a distinctive voice and I first came across him in the BBC radio production of "The Lord of the Rings". He also voiced "Monkey" in the UK dub of the "Monkey" TV series. His voice can't hide from me! "Waking or sleeping, I shall be with you until our business is concluded.", The Black Guardian, "Mawdryn Undead" I really don't know what to say about Valentine Dyall wearing the Keith bird on his head. However, it's interesting that there are similarities between this contract that the Black Guardian makes with Turlough and contracts that the Trickster makes - in both cases, I guess when you're dead you don't have much bargaining power. Interesting that the Transmat capsule is also dimensionally transcendental. "Tell me, Miss Jovanka, this friend of yours, is it by any chance the Doctor?", Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, "Mawdryn Undead" What a fun story!

This story is a bit infamous for its overaged casting of the schoolboys that would make Dawson's Creek say "Wow, that's too much." Though at least for the most prominent character Turlough that's entirely deliberate. Much as I hate to take away from your excitement at seeing the Brig again, the role was initially supposed to be Ian. But William Russell was too busy to take it, and we instead had to wait until fucking 2022 to see him again.

I've never really enjoyed this story very much, but as often happens with stories I'm not the biggest fan of I found I enjoyed it much more a) having been prompted to come back to it for the first time in a long time by wanting to watch your reaction, and b) enjoying the fresh insights you always bring. Plus, you made me laugh a lot in this one!

I've always been relieved about that. I just don't like the idea of Ian in this story, somehow. I love Ian but I just don't think it would have worked. Harry might have been all right, though.
