The original concept for this story was to have William Russell return as Ian Chesterton, sadly he was unavailable and Nick Courtney was added as the Brigadier.

Nistrali

It's always lovely to see the Brig, but he's here mainly because William Russell wasn't available - the teacher in this story was originally written to be Ian.......

Jess! Keith the Raven? Really! But, what a joy to see Alastair again! Been looking forward to seeing your reaction to his return. Nicholas Courtney has acted with Peter Davison on a previous occasion in All Creatures Great and Small, although a much more tragic character than our Brig, in the episode 'Matters of Life and Death'. Valentine Dyall - here appropriately playing The Black Guardian - worked regularly as a voice actor, and was known for many years as "The Man in Black", the narrator of the BBC Radio horror series, Appointment with Fear. In 1963, he appeared as Lord Fortnum in Spike Milligan and John Antrobus's stage play The Bedsitting Room. He had an incredible career as a character actor, making the most of his looks and gravelly voice, appearing in films from 1942 - 82, the first being a supporting role in The Missing Million, and his last, Britannia Hospital. Nearing the end of his life, he was still acting even though virtually blind. He played the role of The Black Guardian first with Tom Baker in 1979. He was also the voice of the computer Deep Thought in the television version of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy. After these he was a butler in the BBC's adaptation of Agatha Christie's Miss Marple 'The Body In The Library'. His vocal presence was made in the Doctor Who radio serial 'Slipback' His role as Captain Slarn was recorded on 10 June 1985, just 14 days before his death, and was broadcast posthumously.

Keith the Raven? Nevermore...

Well, I see I've been beaten to the punch about the information of this part originally being written for Ian and William Russell. On the bright side, if William had been available then he wouldn't have set the Guinness world record that he did for appearing as Ian in The Power of the Doctor.

Thomas Corp

That necklace compliments that dress, very well, Jess. Looks quite nice.

Thank you fopr a wonderful reaction. Well I had hoped this story would make you feel happier after the last reaction & I'm really glad it has. I love this story for how many elements it has to it and, of course, for the Brigadier. It must be a lot to juggle for any writer! I'm going for Russel for the name of the bird on the Gaurdians head, because I think it resembles a crow. Indeed it is the same actor who'd played the character before, but as you say you've only seen it once & he didn't appear much in that final story of the Key to Time, just the last bit at the end, so that's very easily missed. As Peter Davison remarked once, he'd only watched parts of Classic Who once and 'not 500 times like Doctor Who fans!' Guilty as charged! See you next time!

Matthew Beckford

The Keith Adventures Begin! I knew you would love this story as much as I do, albeit for different reasons. I've watched all the Black Guardian episodes several times and I still forgot if it was the same actor! And I don't understand these commenters either that take so much pleasure in reminding you what was said in other stories 🤪

Steve McMullan

It occurs to me that with the final arc of this season, you're going to want to avoid looking at the episode title, which is very spoilery.

Keith the Raven: "Oark! Y'know, Bee Gee, at this moment in time, it occurs to me that I have a strong undeniable craving for a bit of dove jerky!" Black Guardian: "There, there, my little head pet, worry not. Once I've finished with this jerk . . . You can have him! BWAH harrh harrh harrh harrh!" Keith the Raven: "Oarrrk! Look, you know it rattles my hind feathers when you do that! . . . If he starts singing 'How Deep Is Your Love' again, that's the end of it!" Black Guardian: "I know your eyes in the morning sun, I feel you touch me in the pouring rain . . " Keith the Raven: . . . . . NO!!!! Voiced by: Keith - Peter Cook Bee Gee - Valentine Dyall
