3x11: Haha Phee's droid, Mel, is giving Phee plenty of grief about being lumbered in some green goo - no one wants to be covered in that! :) CX-2's ship is so cool, it look like a dart. It almost rivals the later TIE Interceptor for me, but not quite. I love all the gadgets it has too. Damn Empire getting all the nice stuff! Notice we have been seeing Pabu get increasingly greyer in weather, and heading into darkness over the last few episodes hinting at whats to come. Seeing Techs goggles stings, and leaving Lula represents Omega growing up, telling us now she's leaving her childhood behind. She has to, for the mission. Wrecker arguing with Gonky threatening it by saying he'll leave it behind - then what's he do as the ship gets blown up? Save Gonky! What a shot when we see the Imperial Venator jumping in and hovering over the top of Pabu island. Ever since we saw this place we expected this to happen, and now it has, the Empire is here and will tear this place apart searching for Omega. Hard to believe the CX-2 Trooper is a clone. This is what the Empire does, it corrupts all around it, and made these clones into this, a twisted evil menace. Dee Bradley Baker does tremendously on the voice of these clones though, there is no humanity left with them and he voices them such. Hunter losing his touch, letting the stormtrooper get in a shot to alert the others. However, that jump onto the gunship was reminiscent of Kanan in Rebels. He would have been proud! At this time he's still a frightened hunted kid, like Omega is here. She however is strong, is thinking clearly, and makes the hard but right decision to give herself in. You can see how much it breaks Crosshair to accept this, but he trusts her completely and backs her. They set it up so well over the season, using Crosshair's shaking hand, as a reflection of his mental state, and to see him miss the shot with the tracker, when Omega is counting on him, is heart-breaking. Tbf he was under pressure from stormtroopers and the ship was taking off so he didn't have the time; but I do think the Crosshair of old, would have made that shot. Devastating. At least you weren't on tenterhooks like the rest of us here Jess as you can jump straight into the next episode, we had to wait a week and it was torture! At the end Omega on the ship is calming and preparing herself and the music takes on an urgent but fixed note. Yes Omega is going back to Tantiss, but she has a job to do...

3x12: You can see how conflicted Emerie is here now, she knows this isn't right but can't do anything else to help and keep herself out of danger. Crosshair is in bits about what happened and doesn't want to do this, to go back to Tantiss right now, and we can see that just by how shaky his hand is here. However for Omega, the one who put faith in him, he feels he more than owes her and that there might be a way to find out where the base is, through that snake Rampart. Phee is a boss in this episode, really helping our squad out after they lose The Marauder. That silent entry has been well rehearsed before. I bet she has done it plenty of times in the past, being a pirate grabbing those "liberated wonders!". :) Steve Blum voices a few imperials this season and we hear his dulcet tones as a couple of them in this episode. I hate hearing notes of Zeb's voice coming through as one of them, bah!! :P This is a solid caper from CF99 rescuing Rampart and blowing stuff up along the way. It almost reminds me of some of their early missions, and the original squad is here too, though its missing our beloved Tech! The lakes in the background here are polluted (typical of the Empire), and the oily sheen of them is very visible in some shots and just gives a feel that this place has been chewed up badly by the presence of the imps. Another nice touch is showing Crosshair and Wrecker enable Plan 55, just to show how Crosshair is back with them and that its almost like old times. Except its not, they are three members down here, and this is a must-win mission to ensure they find the location of one of them. There is also some competent stormtroopers in this mission, the way they land on the crew's turbotank and take out the guns. They are still trained by clones at this time, so are more of a force to be reckoned with than later, when getting thumped by tiny teddy bears!! :D The way they drag Rampart's stunned body around like a sack of spuds is hilarious. Even the way they roughly through him onto Phee's ramp is a hoot. The least that git deserves, even if he can help them! My heart was in my mouth for Wrecker in fear of not making that jump. With it being the last few episodes, they could indeed do anything, so anytime anyone of them is now in peril, you do tense up! Thats another thing they have done well this season, shown the raised stakes, how much the Empire is a threat to CF99, and building up to the climax of the series! Ok now onto Omega going into the Vault. So we get final confirmation of what they need her for and that her blood is a binder for high M-count force-sensitives. This is perfect for Sidious, as when he passes, he can transfer his essence into a cloned body containing Omega's blood, without any loss of his colossal force power (no doubt with a touch of Sith alchemy to ensure that it is Sidious himself and not just a clone of him). Thats why Omega is so valuable to them, and why Nala Se has been protecting her. It hasn't been established that Omega has a high M-count herself, though Ventress suggested not, and tbh that doesn't matter too much if or if she hasn't, as we've seen in Ahsoka with Sabine eventually being able to tap into the force through time, discipline and focus; and she is of average M-count we believe. Things ramping up big time .

Yeah, well, I can’t help your nervousness, Jess, upon seeing that we are at the point of no return. This is the show’s Rubicon. The time has come. For us. To cross. The Rubicon with this show. Hopefully, the die we cast comes up seven and not snake eyes. Am I right, fellas? Likewise, when you expressed how you cannot cry so early in a reaction, it makes a man say, “Brave of you, Jess. But I would have thought you had learned your lesson.” I did figure that you would have copious anxiety after this. The feeling is mutual. The first episode was the third of April, two days before my birthday, and it was a work night. Picture staying up till about three in the morning, getting that stress, then hitting the pillow having to be up in another two and a half hours. And that Thursday was the season two finale of Invincible with the MASSIVE stress and worry for Debbie in that show; my birthday week was anxiety ridden beyond belief this year. The stress starts when X2 gets the location of Pabu from Phee’s ship. I’m not sure if Phee ever got any shit for failing to notice X2, or anything he did. If she has, it’s uncalled for, and my response to people who yell at Phee would be this, “Hey, hey, hey! Take it easy, man! It’s not Phee’s fault that the old Trandoshan bag ratted our heroes out again.” Speaking of which: X2 sees Phee, has no overt response to her, and he inadvertently trips her alarms on her ship. Things that would not happen if he was Tech. But do you think the #Tech Lives movement paid attention to that? No. Instead, they hyperfocus on X2’s use of the word “domicile” (I swear to God I wish I was just making this shit up.) and point and yell at the screen, “See?! There!! He used the word “domicile”, that’s a word that Tech used!! Tech Lives!!!” With that, we gloss over how we would then see The Acolyte, which as of last night, has been canceled, (RAT BASTARDS!!!!) where the word is said there, showing it’s not uniquely a Tech word. Not to mention the fact that Jesse Pinkman said it. Yet the theorists persisted, making a man reach his limit with this horseshit and say, “I hope there’s a mortician’s convention in town, because I may kill somebody.” Before it goes to hell, the Pabu scenes are lovely. Great to see the younger clones have the new home. Great to hear that the batch has the open invitation to return when the heat’s off. I knew I was not ready for your reaction to Tech’s goggles. I let out some undignified and unmanly weeping at that part. Given the episode’s title, you do expect everyone could die, hence your stress for Wrecker and Gonky being strong. Give Wrecker his due, he spotted the bombs, connected the dots, yelled, “HOOAAAAAAA!” moved and got Gonky out of harm’s way. I do love how you went back to verify Gonky surviving. My heart broke for you, Jess, seeing the Empire rain Hellfire on Pabu. I knew you’d have a similar response as Omega’s decision. You had more or less exactly the reaction I was expecting to Crosshair missing. We all felt that one. Crosshair’s body language spoke for my own heart sinking. And we end on that very grim note of Omega being taken back to Tantiss with no way to track her, which again, imagine hitting the pillow after seeing that one knowing you got work first thing in the morning. Miraculously, I did ok, and it reminds me of how grateful I was to have the day off before to emotionally recover from your reactions to Schindler’s List and the finale of The Ones Who Live. Now to the second episode. You had a much calmer response to when Hemlock says that “it was wise” for Omega to surrender herself than I should have expected. Me, I heard Hemlock say that, and I didn’t even blink, I just said, “Go fuck yourself, Royce.” I love how you hold out hope that Emerie will come through. I think she already is as unless Hemlock has her run multiple tests to remove all doubt, she stalled a long time if it took the whole episode to verify Omega’s midichlorian count. And now Omega’s shown the other kids. Which, something tells me Omega is not shown the full, complete, and rather... Unnatural... picture that is Project Necromancer. I think one or two things might have gone a bit differently if she had. Because when, not if, when she escapes, like you note, she’d spill about what she saw if Hemlock was stupid enough to show her the full picture of Project Necromancer.

As to our boys, I love how Hunter doesn’t give Crosshair shit for letting Omega surrender herself, and Wrecker only has a small bit of yelling, and even that, he’s not too hard on Crosshair. And I love how Hunter is prepared to get angrier at Crosshair for not sharing the possible way to know where to find Tantiss, but then you see him soften out of sympathy when Crosshair stresses Tantiss is somewhere he NEVER wants to go back to. And he concedes that rather salient point of Rampart is not exactly the most trustworthy. Regardless, they are out of options, so getting Rampart it is, leading to more of him in our lives displeasing both of us, Jess. I wasn’t expecting it myself, though I noted in his last episode that he likely wouldn’t be killed. The logic being what does an Imperial like him fear the most? More than getting killed, more than anything? Prison. Getting locked up with everyone you put away. I also sympathize how frustrating it is to have an episode with both Hemlock and Rampart. It’s funny, the two primary overarching villains of this show are two hateful sumbitches, even by my standards. Ultimately, strong characters, yet hateful. I have no doubt that they do have their fans, though admittedly the idea of Rampart fans sounds weird. But this is the beautiful thing of Star Wars, there is a character for everyone, and you stand by them for life. If the Emperor is your number one guy, be PROUD that the Emperor is your number one guy. And if C-3PO is your number one guy, be PROUD that C-3PO is your number one guy. And if Pong Krell is your number one guy... Hide that fact. Seriously, nobody needs to know anything about that. Phee comes through for our boys. Christ, it gets you in the heart hearing Phee mention that Tech told her all about Crosshair’s sparkling personality. And the way she says that indicates Tech was comfortable enough with Phee to speak of Crosshair, and in a positive way too. Tells us Tech would have forgiven Crosshair and welcomed him back had he lived. I had to pause to VERY angrily weep at that one. The bulk of the action is wonderful how the batch has to recover Rampart from the Belly of the Steel Beast. Again, a goddamn shame that John’s piece of music of the same name is not used as Lord, that selection is FANTASTIC. That said, of course this show delivers excellent music. Love the teamwork how they know the plans. Love how you noted that Hunter is DONE fucking around. As predicted, Rampart gets under ALL our skins lickety-split. It makes sense how he recognizes the score. Smug snake though he is, he’s not stupid, and he clocks that since they’re not killing him nor letting him go, they need something from him, leading the snake to preen like a peacock, and it makes us SICK. As to your suggestion of torture. Oh, don’t worry, Jess, your response of torture being an option with Rampart is not unbecoming. I had the same thought; we’re Slytherins, after all, so it makes sense. My own statement past a point was, “You’re right about one thing. Crosshair is not planning on killing you, Edmon. But you’re making it VERY tempting.” Besides which, I’m sure Crosshair would agree with you and loves the idea of how much pain he can inflict on Rampart without killing him. Hell, if I were Crosshair, I’d fire a warning shot next to Rampart’s head after he got mouthy one too many times, I’d then re-aim, and say, “Now, if you don’t settle down, I’m going to have to put one in your kneecap. And I hear tell that’s a very PAINFUL place to get shot.” They ultimately do get him out. KNEW you would have a strong laugh over when Wrecker tossed Rampart like a ragdoll onto the ramp, providing a wonderful image, albeit tis a shame that Wrecker doesn’t ask “Can you fly, Eddie?” before giving Rampart the heave-ho. I love how you assess how much Rampart can be trusted. My own thought was he cannot be trusted any further than I can throw him, bad knee and all, but one, they have no alternative. Two, you can trust his self-interest to get himself somewhere not with the batch, so for the time being, we have to put up with Rampart. This all is a small price to pay as it is a piece to the puzzle sliding into place to allow the beautiful escape/rescue to commence. And we were all looking forward to that back in April. The feeling has returned and is stronger than ever. Because if you had reactions this strongly beautiful to these episodes, we are in for a delightful final two Bad Batch reactions. Thank you for this week’s wonderful Bad Batch reaction, Jess.

Yeah shame about The Acolyte. Really hope they revisit that time period in live action one day, but it won't be a continuation, which is a real shame. Looks like the three films coming are taking the priority (and there is one or two stills of the Mando film at least) as the only two shows confirmed after Skeleton Crew is Andor season 2 and Ahsoka season 2. We don't even know if there is any more animations coming, though there have been heavy rumours about a couple of things there.

Thomas Corp

Nobody wants the green goo. That one ship is dead sexy, though not as much as the Executor, the TIE Interceptor, or the Ebon Hawk. The weather also matches typical Illinois weather in April, so it was very apropos for the thematic relevance in the episode. We are never not going to cry about Tech, are we? Lovely symbolism with Lula. Wrecker is the lump of sugar with that, “They can’t be mean to Gonky. Only WE can be mean to Gonky.” Warms the heart how he saves Gonky. I HATE how much I love the shot of the Venator. My love for the Empire never lets up all that much, and I hate myself for it. Dee is so good, and he brings the inhuman nature of X2 and the result of Hemlock’s work. To Hunter’s defense, adrenaline is both a powerful ally and a most efficacious crippling agent. Respect for Omega committing to her sacrifice. Similarly, the heart goes out to Crosshair for going along with it, much though it kills him to do so. Yeah, the interruption is what fucks over Crosshair’s attempt, though they build up all that he’s going through that had he been his old self, such an interruption would not have been a concern. God, I could FEEL his heart sinking when the tracker missed. You see Omega steel herself to prepare for what she knows is the. One Way. Out.

Thomas Corp

Emerie is in a similar thing of Kino once the truth is revealed. She knows she has to do something, yet is understandably afraid, and she has yet to gain that STEEL that Kino had when he committed. It's sort of similar to those trapped in the ways of the Sith: You see no way out, yet you want there to be. Crosshair torn apart by guilt, and then offering the last resort of getting Rampart. He, Hunter, and Wrecker, they are GOING to get their kid back. The whole thing just feels like if anything similar happened to any of on my dad’s side, my cousins’ kids, how my three cousins, my brother, and I would have that same grit in getting them back. Phee is cementing herself into Star Wars legend status. I caught Steve’s voice too, noting, “That’s Steve Blum. Good man.” Good notes how it would almost be just like old times, but we know it isn’t and can never be again. As I’ve said, the Stormtroopers would realistically have to have a reasonably proficient track record for the Empire to use them for twenty-three years. I stick up for the ones on Endor as they put in a better showing than given credit for/how pop-culture paints the picture. I REALLY did not need to see Rampart again, even with a pretty damn nice beard. Love how Crosshair is just BARELY resisting the urge to just put one right between Rampart’s eyes. Probably empty a magazine into his balls first just to vent in a “hit the pillow” therapeutic manner. Love the shared amusement derived from Rampart getting dragged and tossed about. Serves him right, the pond scum. I do see how you would be worried about Wrecker not making the jump. I could easily see if I had the shared concern, the relief would have been overwhelming when he makes it, saying, “I thought I’d lost you, boy!” The reason why I wasn’t too concerned, yet, was the thought: Omega is the only one guaranteed to live. If the batch dies, it would happen on Tantiss; laying down their lives so Omega could live. Probably in a Rogue One manner. But again, I get how you had the response you had. Yes, Hemlock confirms without actually saying what they need Omega for. Shame he never tells Sidious about Omega. His paranoia probably fucks him on that, and he likely has the mentality, “No need to report that to him until we have something to report.” It’s why he never says anything to Sidious when Omega escaped. If he had, I could see Vader, the Grand Inquisitor, and the Fourth Sister being dispatched to recover Omega. But Hemlock is too afraid what will happen to him for having let Omega get away, plus he knows Nala Se is right that whilst he does know, he doesn’t KNOW that Omega’s one test didn’t just ring up a false positive, and he’s afraid of giving Sidious a false answer. A demonstration of how fear is not an ally to Hemlock, but a master. Things are surely ramping up.

Yeah there is a lot of love for Rampart for some but I believe that's mainly due to the voice actor, Noshir Dalal, being active on social media and reddit when Rampart came back. I've been playing Horizon Forbidden West over the last week and he voices a few characters there, so it's almost like revisiting an old friend hearing him here again, even if Rampart is a self-serving SOB.

With five episodes to go, it's time for the show to really buckle down and get serious about tying all the strands it's been laying out into a knot. And that starts with the moment everyone was hoping wouldn't come, the Empire discovering Pabu. If your enemy goes to ground, leave no ground to go to. It feels very deliberate that the show's most comedic character is taken out so early, so the rest can focus purely on the dramatics of the attack. Now how would Chekhov have put it, if you show a sniper's shaking hand in the first act... Not that it stops the moment from hitting any harder, since this tends to be a franchise where the heroes just succeed at their smaller tasks even if the bigger picture remains out of reach. As MST3K put it so well, "But I chased you on a horse! I'm supposed to win!" And that was the end of the two episodes we got that week, leading us to spend that time absolutely burning to see the Batch storm into Tantiss and shout "Get away from her, you bitch!" Usually I'm really annoyed when a character pulls this kind of "You never asked" shit, but in this case Crosshair's genuine trauma about going back to Tantiss very much sells that he'd avoid mentioning this until he absolutely had to. Plus he told himself he'd lose twenty pounds and get his neck done before seeing any of those assholes again. Anyway, I'm always a sucker for the "enemy mine" trope, which leads to an interesting dynamic every single time, and is especially nice if the writers are good enough to keep everyone in character through the whole thing. Which leads me to the one downside of Rampart coming back now, the return of the only people more annoying than the C-X2 Tech truthers, desperate for every single villain to have a redemption story. Yes Mr. Sherman, they'll definitely be able to pull a Kallus with this guy in just three episodes.

Thomas Corp

It’s definitely deliberate taking Wrecker out of commission for the episode so that there is no levity when the Empire comes around. Chekov’s Tremor works remarkably well in setting this moment up and has the audience hoping against hope that we’re not at the chapter where the payoff occurs. And like you say, the moment hits hard. Good Mystery Science Theater comparison. It sounds like the moment in Seven Psychopaths when Christopher Walken is told to put his hands up, to which he says no, repeats that when the guy goes “What?” and being asked why makes Christopher’s character say, “I don’t want to.” Then upon being told, “...But I’ve got a gun.” Christopher’s character says, “I don’t care.” and when the guy with the gun then says, “Th... That doesn’t make any sense!” Christopher’s character laughs a little as he says, “Too bad!” Strong desire was had to see the batch go full-out Sigourney Weaver in getting Omega back. The “You didn’t ask” trope usually works better in comedic situations than in dramatic ones, like in Star Trek Kirk being thrown by who Spock’s parents are, or when Dr. Pulaski defends not saying anything about her past dalliance with Riker’s father, how she says, “It wasn’t a secret, the topic just never came up.” There is sometimes the annoyance how a character never poses the question, “Why would I even THINK to ask?” about whatever out of left field situation or development that most people in similar situations wouldn’t think to inquire about. Here the trope’s use is done well given Crosshair’s trauma, and you see Hunter silently concede the point of how untrustworthy Rampart is. And to Crosshair’s defense, he freely admits he had that as the last-ditch option, which now they have no other choice except to go down that path. That “lose twenty pounds and get his neck done” feels like it’s from something, but my brain’s not providing an answer nor is google helping. The enemy mine trope is always great. My favorite variation is when the villain never once double crosses the hero, even if they are still secretly going about their hidden agenda. The cases where the villain recognizes that there is zero practical reason to betray the hero, thus it’s in their better interest to work with the hero, and once it’s all said and done, they part ways, and go back to hating each other when next their paths cross. Here the enemy mine is given a strong showing, especially with the batch making it abundantly clear how much they hate Rampart, whilst also pointing out that Rampart really has no leg to stand on, bargaining-wise. Maybe it’s because my whole life I’ve tended to love villains the best when they’re villains that I get so annoyed by people desperate for every single villain to have a redemption story/give them sympathetic backstories and make them the hero. It’s what ruined the Maleficent movies for me. I never even considered the idea of a Rampart redemption arc as such an arc was absolutely, totally, and in all other ways inconceivable. Supposing the thought had come to my attention, then I have one response to the Mr. Sherman thing: My thought would be that like the X2 business, they COULD go that route. And if they do, it stinks.
