Some of the most exciting times I have watching movies and shows is when an actor I haven’t thought of in years suddenly pops up and shows a range I’d never dreamed they had. So I had a great time with Erik Estrada here, and I would be completely behind this leading to a larger role in Season 2 if that’s where we’re going, with him probably wanting some harsh revenge. He’s a lead farmer, motherfucker! The trickiest part of doing a double twist like these Vaulties being good after all is making the misdirection make sense on its own (who can forget Jonathan from Buffy climbing a clock tower with a sniper rifle just to commit suicide?). And this does a reasonably good job with that, though apparently the Overseer really is just that bigoted against surface people, which will probably make a real problem before long. Though in the meantime we get so much great comedy from multiple angles: the scientist insisting the horrific massacre should in no way be taken as the experiments being wrong, the vault’s pitiful idea of the worst possible punishment they can give, and finally Maximus living out a glorious action hero redemptive moment while we know the whole time what’s really going on. As Homer Simpson put it, “It’s funny because it isn’t me.” One part I wasn’t looking forward to was most of the episode leaving you hanging regarding Dogmeat (and it’s quite a relief to be able to use that name), but it seems enough other distractions get thrown around that it wasn’t much trouble. Including the return of the guy officially named the Snake Oil Salesman, but the fans all just call him the Chicken Fucker. Who it turns out was being entirely honest about his stuff being able to regrow Michael Emerson’s foot, though he probably would have turned it down with knowledge of the other effects. Easily the highlight here was your delayed reaction to the arrow shot, and dawning realization of its full meaning. I never thought I’d be interested in Thaddeus getting his own arc, but here we are. And my favorite connection to the games that I’ve learned from other reactions is that the song Uncle Fester plays is straight from one of them, and the fans hated it so passionately that after a while a patch was created just to remove it.

As we come to the penultimate episode, we reveal our differences of favorite characters in this show. You say Norm and our good girl, whereas I’ve been living for the Ghoul in this whole show. Resultingly, I did not have the same level of worry and anxiety initially, though now I have it hearing you express it. More on that later. Start with the vault that Lucy and Maximus were in. Figured your reaction to the tape, though it wasn’t as bad as the previous tape. Love when Maximus sees Lucy in apparent danger. He has to decide: the girl or the popcorn? Naturally, he’s got to think that one over a minute. Love how when he commits to saving Lucy, he still has the “Ok. Last bite. And carry on.” moment. I am still unclear about this vault as now you’re talking about the reveal that they weren’t that bad after all, and both when I watched it, and now seeing your reaction, I’m scratching my head, saying, “...Did I miss something?” The whole place still feels unsettling and cultish as all shit. I wouldn’t want to stay there. They also seem stupid if they are so convinced that Lucy will die the second that she goes to the surface, it seems appallingly idiotic to waste two weeks’ worth of supplies if they think that so sincerely. Concerning Lucy and Maximus. See you’re more invested in Lucy and Maximus, and now I’m the fucking asshole having problems with it all. Decent enough chemistry though they have, it feels rushed. The payoff was not earned. Or I should say that I did not think so. Their big kiss, I’m left cold by it, and I’m fairly fucking positive that I’m alone on that one, wouldn’t be the first time. Your reactions to all their moments increase my feeling like a shitheel. They did at least avoid the usual fallout (no pun intended) that usually happens with the liar revealed trope, I’ll give them points for that. And I guess, like you said, we save the penis exploding for a later time. Shared reaction to Lucy’s offer of the tuna, albeit in my case, I hate tuna. The shit squire had a bad day. Amazing that he was able to walk given his foot. And I had a gout flare-up back in May that left me barely able to move, so I am astonished with his gnarly foot that he could even stand. KNEW he would get on your shitlist when he plopped our good girl into the empty pop bin. He too is appallingly stupid, threatening the chicken fucker when, as said chicken fucker points out, knowing how to mix the medicine is important. Lovely to see Fred Armisen with his love of music. I see Ryan has noted the music is pulled straight from the games, and it was music that it appears that everyone hated with a fiery passion. Granted, I’ve been completely out of the fucking loop since the goddamn fifth grade as to what is or is not popular, music-wise, but I hear that, combined with the line that people hate it, and I’m yelling, “...What’s wrong with it!?” Unless, of course, people got it stuck in their heads like Deanna with the music-box tune, which I can understand that. That squire has worse aim than Not Jerry Seinfeld from Pulp Fiction. Love your complete lack of sympathy for him in regard to his ghoulification.

Now to the man of the hour: the Ghoul. Loved his opening scene complete with a surprise appearance by Erik Estrada. Seeing Erik was a heart attack and a half. Made a man yell, “HO-LY FUCK!! He’s in this!?” Nice to see you had a similar reaction to Erik as well. Oh, the Ghoul was leaning HARD into the Lee Van Cleef of it all. Leaning hard into the Lee Van Cleef of it all is why the slow eating since you brought it up. The Ghoul has also undoubtedly seen Once Upon a Time in the West; hence he has no desire for the boy to live out that film, hence his killing of poor Tommy. As the Ghoul leaves, I chimed in, “Condolences, Ponch.” We get a bit more of his past, and with it more of the mystery of Moldaver. It feels like the show is hinting at Moldaver being sympathetic, and I’m still not getting good vibes from Moldaver, she feels the opposite extreme at the other end of the horseshoe. One thing for sure, she’s apparently never gotten old. She clearly has not died. One would hope she didn’t have to feed to achieve that. (Am I saying that right? That’s the line, or close to the basic principle of the line, yes?) As to the spying on the wife business. Considering I’m not married, nor have I ever been, nor have I even dated a woman, let alone be in a relationship with one, I’m not one to offer words either way of does your encouragement of the Ghoul to spy on his wife make you a terrible person or not. Objectively viewing the narrative, however, given, as I said last week, his wife has exhibited strong Laureen Hobbs vibes, combined with other red flags, namely the no dogs rule, playing the part of Columbo to ascertain the precise mystery does not sound the least understandable thing in the world. Hence, I would say it does not make you a terrible person, Jess, your encouragement to spy. On the scale of one to ten question, I leave that to more learned and experienced minds. Nice that in the present day that our good Ghoul saves our good girl. Complete with the Emmy winning line, “I’m sorry, Dogmeat. But you ain’t him.” Mind you, Walton did not actually win the Emmy. Unsurprising given the stiff competition which included the Shōgun dominance. It is still a scene and line that makes a man observe that major awards attention would be on the horizon for Walton in addition to his other terrific work in this show. That scene and line that he has, by the way, it’s also the chief reason why I haven’t ever gotten another cat in the last twenty years. There are other reasons. The one that tops the list is that it feels like I would be replacing Muffin, and I can’t do it. I’d be like the Ghoul saying to whatever cat I was with, “I’m sorry, good girl. Good girl though you are, you’re just not her.” Much though I would love to have another cat, again, I just, I just can’t do it. Christ did that scene make me sob. As to Norm. As mentioned, I can feel your heart racing out of worry for him. A worry increased by the poisoning of the raiders. Unsympathetic individuals though they are, and much though Norm was in favor of them getting killed, even he’s horrified by their fate, and presumably the unspoken threat. Stephanie seems to have had one too many sips of the blood of Kali, and she’s given some to Chet. Leads Norm to calling him a coward. “Whipped” I believe is the clinical term. Norm is not a coward, much though it does not do your anxiety any favors. He saw... something... at the end and leaves us on the feeling of dread going into the finale. Given how the show has gone, I expect we will have a good finale to look forward to. In any event, a lovely penultimate reaction to the penultimate episode of season one of Fallout, Jess, I very much enjoyed it.

I have heard and am fully supportive of the idea of Erik coming back and having a larger role, preferably with him saying, “HERE’S MY MOTHERFUCKING FARM!!!” when fighting off people. Goddamn, was it awesome to see him in this. Again, confused feelings about the vault apparently being altruistic. It still feels too culty. And like you note, the one guy is prejudiced, which likely is going to go poorly somewhere down the line. The way the narrative wants you to side with Lucy, and I’m not vibing with it is yet another occasion where I ask, “...Am I REALLY just THAT much of a cold blackhearted bastard? ...Shit.” Don’t know jackshit about the Buffy thing, but ok. You knew Jess would have a strong reaction to the mistreatment of our good girl. I think the chicken fucker is just happy that there’s not much higher authority in the wasteland, so he doesn’t have to put up with officials saying, “License and registration... chicken fucker!” every time a visit is paid. Again, do not see what’s so awful about Uncle Fester’s favorite music. Then again, I practically am the Uncle Fester in my family, and a presumed personification of my brain would likely look like Betelgeuse, so maybe I’m just too weird or some such shit.

I have to imagine "I'm shit without a scope" is another game reference.

I have to point out that after three times in a row of the most Emmy wins in a single year increasing by just one, Shogun made it jump from 13 to 18. And it deserves every bit of that. I've been selling it to people with "Imagine if Mr. Bean was dropped into the middle of Game of Thrones." All these people spending months to years making complicated plans against each other, and suddenly this one idiot shows up and wrecks everything he touches, and they all have to scramble to account for him. It was also nice to see Fargo Season 5 was in the Limited Series category, which gives me more hope that there's more Ripley coming. Oh, and OGB really loved Purple Noon, describing it with "This was definitely a tense watch! At every moment you're worried that Tom doesn't have a plan on what to do next, but of course he's able to get away with it all... until he doesn't 🤪 Truly crazy stuff and an entertaining watch!" For a while on my first viewing I was expecting a Matt Berry robot to jump out at Norm at the end, but then when the credits started I figured there's no way they'd make it a cliffhanger if that's all it was.
