"What? No, not the mind probe.", Castellan, "The Five Doctors" Ok, that is one of the most infamous lines in Classic Who fandom - mainly the actor's delivery. I couldn't wait for this week's reaction - primarily for your reactions to the cameos - and that was wonderful. So much fun to watch your reaction here - especially for Richard Franklin and Frazer Hines - ouch, that was a shriek! They couldn't get everyone back for major parts but the fact they gave so many cameos was lovely. Last week I mentioned that I had watched the show with the "New Who" team commentary. David Tennant mentioned a nice anecdote (and remember he was a life-long Classic Who fan) - when he was just getting into acting and searching around for an agent he rang round the phone numbers on a list to see if anyone would represent him; one of the people he contacted said they would note down his details and that her name was Wendy Padbury; and as you can imagine how the young David felt at speaking to "Zoe". Sweet. And we see Wendy in this one here. So I did manage to watch the "Companions" commmentary (Carole Ann Ford, Nicholas Courtney, Elisabeth Sladen and Mark Strickson) for prep this time. As with last week, this companions commentary is well worth listening if anyone can get access to it. They were all great - lots of talk of freezing Welsh hillsides and thermal underwear. Of course they all, by this stage, had worked with each other many times at the various Who conventions. "Freeze, Sarah Jane. If you move, we're dead.", The 3rd Doctor, "The Five Doctors" I like the Raston Warrior Robot - especially the vanishing leap cut - that's very cool and it's pretty nice the way it takes out so many Cybermen. Actually, the costume is a painted version of those android skin-suits from the cave sequence in "Earthshock". And as David had noted in 1983 - there's a visible zip down the back. "I don't like this at all. Someone or something wants us to go inside. ... After you, Brigadier.", The 2nd Doctor, "The Five Doctors" Ok, so the week before we had Tegan dressed up as a Yeti. Last week the 2nd Doctor looked like a Yeti. And now we get an actual Yeti attacking 2 and the Brig! "What does this bit mean?", "To lose is to win and he who wins shall lose.", "I know what it says. What does it mean?", The 2nd and 3rd Doctors, "The Five Doctors" The banter between the Doctors in the tomb is wonderful. As is the greeting between the various companions. This is what an anniversary story is all about. And the 3rd Doctor gets to do his "I've reversed the polarity of the neutron flow" line - I love it! I'm not sure I could rank a best Doctor pair - I really do think any pair could work. They are all just so great that any pairing would be fabulous. "You mean you're deliberately choosing to go on the run from your own people in a rackety old Tardis?", "Why not? After all, that's how it all started.", Tegan and the 5th Doctor, "The Five Doctors" I love this story.

I swear, it's like every word is from a different take.

"What was that scream?" Holy cow, we've got a Neverending Story situation.

Oh Jess, what a reaction this was, even more fantastic than i thought it would be! I am not ashamed to say that your spontaneous applause and tears at the end moved me to tears also - as it means so much to me, to see someone who clearly adores this show as much as I do. I started watching in 1982 as a 5 year old and all these stories you are currently watching, have a special place in my heart. The Sixth Doctor is my absolute favourite and I am dying for you to meet him and I hope you appreciate his personality and hold him as dear to your heart as the rest. You are now up to 1984 and Season 21, one of the best seasons out of the whole series of Doctor Who and New Who. For me, Seasons 21, 22 and 23 are the best out of all the seasons and you are in for a hell of a ride!!! xxxx

I just realized that I completely failed to notice the little Cyberman and the wee K-9 you had set-up during this reaction. Looks adorable. And as you noted, it accidentally works out well, given they appeared in the special. Ha. Nicely done, Jess. The remaining half of this reaction was beautiful beyond belief. I take your point on wishing for more Doctor interaction, but when the flipside of this is appearances by Mike, Liz, Jamie, and Zoe, the complaint is minimal. Loved your reaction to all those who returned. I appreciate the apology given to any potential newcomers and the uninitiated. For us old timers that are initiated, we get less of an apology, as yes, we know what’s up. I felt your emotions when you asked the show to not go too into it with Jamie and Zoe’s plotline. That’s me with Clara and the Face the Raven business; if the show tackles that again, a warning will be appreciated so I can make at least a token effort to control my emotions. Don’t recall offhand if you mentioned about being upset that Mike wasn’t in the previous multi-Doctor special, but I can see you having the sentiment. I was most delighted by your reactions to the guardian robots. Or were they hand on hip and pow! beings? Most impressive when they smoked the Cybermen with their sharp pointy sticks, throwing them with the “And what? And WHAT?” energy, then they strike a Fosse. Love it. The question of the Two just happens to have dynamite in his coat, well the TARDIS has everything bigger on the inside, stands to reason the Doctor would apply such a thing to their fierce fashion. I think you of all people would most appreciate that, Jess. Love how you call out the Master for being salty about not being trusted, and I most CERTAINLY relished your reaction to our dear old Brig knocking the Master’s lights out, which you now say is likely making top ten Who moments ever. Such adoration for your reactions when all the Doctors interact. It is a mite too easy to foresee Borusa being the villain. And yeah, knowing your claustrophobia, you KNEW his fate would horrify you. He got what he wanted. But he lost what he had. He chose... Poorly. I can’t improve on anything you said as it was all so wonderful. To answer the question of which two Doctors do I want to share a full multi-part story, the answer is simple. I want to see our Doctors, Jess: Twelve and Eleven. See Peter and Matt act off each other, kill it, make us sob our eyes out just getting to see them again. I think I’ll break out the gin just for the occasion if it ever happens. It would actually be hard to predict who would have the stronger and greater number of tears, you or me. I’d say the odds would be about even. And even if this never happens onscreen, I’ll take it in print or comics. I just want such a story, and I’m sure you would love it too. Just as you loved this story, and we now have loved your reaction to it. One of your best reactions, Jess, that I thank you so, so very much for.

It's been confirmed that Tales of the TARDIS is considered full canon, so Jamie and Zoe now remember everything again. On the commentary, Terrence Dicks talks quite a bit about his frustration at having to put in more and more Cyberman scenes because the current producers loved them so much, so the whole bit with them getting slaughtered by a "superior" robot was him biting back at it. The funny thing is, while I was watching this as my first Who experience ever, I assumed this robot was a huge thing in the show rather than just this one-off appearance. With the classic series ending before it could do another anniversary special, one of the best parts of Power of the Doctor was seeing Colin and Sylvester finally get to be in one, especially after Moffat declined the chance to put them in Day of the Doctor.

What a lovely reaction! I especially enjoyed your "Girl, that was me!" after Sarah asked what the scream was, and your emotion at the end was very touching. I do remember when you started thinking how long it would take you to get through Classic Who... Well into the 2020s - and now, here we are rapidly heading there... Thank you so much for all your efforts, as always. It's so lovely re-experiencing these stories through your eyes - which is, of course, what reaction videos are all about!
