I love this episode's focus on soullessness... I think it gives us a lot of insight to season 6 Sam- a different perspective than what we had back then. In season 6, it is easy to see Soulless Sam as just, almost monster-like. Cold, calculating, brutal. But seeing an outside perspective, it makes you think more of what Sam's line of thinking was. Len was "faking it till he made it", and even though he was now supernatural -related, he started out as a civilian. So he reacts like a normal person- keeps acting as a normal person, to the best of his ability. So I think that shines a light on what Sam was trying to do back in season 6... he was a hunter, that's how he was raised. So what seemed ruthless and cold and just cruel at points, was actually Sam trying to do what he thought was the job. Of course, being without a moral code or regard for rules and lines not to cross made him beyond dangerous as a trained, skilled, experienced fighter, but it wasn't just pure indifference. Sam had been trying to act the way he thought he was supposed to. Just a really cool retrospective, and broadening of "soulless lore". Not a big, showy, flashy episode, but really deep, and really cool in a quieter kind of way

It is a thing how this episode makes one reexamine Sam’s soullessness back a few seasons ago. Seeing Len having the going through the motions thing, shows us how a normal guy, somewhat eccentric though he is, cope with being sans soul. He focuses on the familiar. Looking back on Sam’s ordeal, like you said, it does feel like he’s falling back on the familiar hunter life, what men like John and Dean and Bobby taught him, and it was his way of trying to navigate the best of a bad situation. The main problem then being that without the moral compass, it got ugly fast, which gets echoed here how Len isn’t wanting to take the chance with him being free in society. And like he said, Sam mentioned you don’t get the soul back. Well, technically, Sam said you generally don’t get it back, and even then, the chances aren’t great, hence Len’s decision. Sometimes the quieter, less flashy episodes tend to be the better ones.
