Nice to hear that Agatha was the dark angel looking out for you, runtime-wise. I know you like that, especially on days with a busy to-do list, hope that has been going well by the way. And yes, the title would need to be altered. But the reason why not is simple: The title of the episode being derived from part of the ballad that when sung sounds the dies iræ, dies illa structure in music, which, well, ends up boding a most ominous and quite fitting portent of things to come. Now to the episode. The damn snakes. Why’d it have to be snakes? Neat reveal about the Salem Seven. Agatha puts it succinctly about the moral of that story. It sounds like you and I agreed with the ladies’ dissatisfaction on the brooms being both sexist and prosaic. My one small joke was, “You could phone Kathy Najimy and borrow her vacuum cleaner if a broom is too trite.” You’re noting about lightning hitting them in the middle of their E. T. homage shot. If the lighting hits any of them, they are on branches, wood, and they won’t conduct the electricity. They’re good. And they get forced back on the road. Sauron had these roads on the pathways to Mordor, hence why they didn’t use the eagles, I’m guessing. Shame there was no pterodactyl. And now we have another, I assume, tv homage with the setting. I’m noting the contrast of WandaVision having the Tvland/Metv shows which I easily recognize all of them. Here, we’re tackling modern stuff that I don’t know. We see the set-up this week, I note, “So, what reference and/or homage am I not understanding this week?” Rather interesting to have this be Agatha’s trial, which does make sense at the midpoint of this. You caught the Mrs. Hart of it all before I and our coven did. Agatha fucking with your feelings was most uncouth, and yet I am still defending Agatha as love for her is strong. I got a laugh over Agatha making the crack about Sharon drinking before noon. Like I said, eleven years of retail now, I’m in zero position to judge. Quite a jolt when Mommie Dearest joins the fray and possesses Agatha. The coven was likely hoping that the power of Christ compels Agatha. But guess what? It’s not very compelling. When they change tactics, and all start moving to punish Agatha, I chimed in to her defense, saying, “H-hey, now wait a second. Now, wait a minute. You ladies are taking this kind of personal. Aren’t ya?” Evanora going on about how she should have killed Agatha straight away. And people say that Tywin Lannister was harsh. Egads. Rio becoming rather passionately defensive of Agatha being harmed by Evanora: She really wants that one last roll in the hay before slaying our dear Agatha. Love how you note we keep peeling layers of that back in a steady fashion. They continue to tease about Agatha’s boy. I knew it was coming, and it still HURT, your reaction to Alice being drained of life and power. Jesus, you ripped my heart up bad with that one, Jess. And yeah, I was noting how unfair it is to you. See this is the silver lining of loving villains that no one ever talks about. I get, with some exceptions, ABSURDLY desensitized when my favorites die as they’re almost always villains. It does hurt like a motherfucker when the non-villainous characters that are my favorites get killed. And I don’t blame you for being shtum on your third favorite given the (temporary) death of Sharon, and now the death of Alice. There were a lot of reactors who expressed a similar thing when Tech died. Makes me sweating bullets about how much I’ve gushed about Lilia as now I’m deathly afraid for our dear beloved Patti. I do feel for you batting zero, favorites-wise. Now to the big reveal. It appears that Tobias didn’t take to kindly to Alice’s death. Of course, as Agatha points out, it is the witchy way. The Sith and the witches are similar in almost every way, including their quest for greater power. And to twist the knife further, Agatha drops that big bombshell, which took me a second too. And this being with a small confession. I’ve known about the basic idea of that. Evidently, a trailer or promo or some such shit revealed... something about that. That came to my attention. I don’t even know how, but the idea was there. Was largely just curious that if it went the route it seems to be going, how it would play out. Still waiting for more specifics, even with that big shot at the end. So, I am reserving going into details until we have more of a precise picture, Jess. With that in mind, I’d tread carefully with the comment section on youtube with this one. Certainly, Tobias (Still calling him that for right now) let loose and sent them all sinking. Not Rio as she... Well, Rio was presumably doing unseemly things to Alice’s body. Tobias looked VERY grim and determined whilst damning the witches to the earth of the road. He might even be silently and sardonically mocking that the witches are not to worry as nothing’s gonna harm them, not wh... Nope. No. No. I can’t do it. I can’t even fucking joke about a reference to that song. Chrissake that is probably the most goddamn depressing Eleven O’clock Number ever. I almost made myself sob just thinking about it. And we end with the Billie Eilish of it all. You immediately prove that you are more with it with modern music, as I only knew the Billie Eilish of it all because the closed captioning said so. So, that’s two songs of hers that I’ve heard: that and her Bond theme. I would say three, but the Barbie song still is not retained in my memory; I’m telling you, still, nothing. So, hell of a spot to leave things until next week where I have your reactions to Agatha and Daryl and Carol to look forward to. It’ll be a hot time in the old town next Thursday. Until then, this was a wonderful reaction, Jess, thank you.

This show now has two of my biggest “They’re not really killing this character, right?” scenes since Sprig Plantar. And I’m still not buying either just yet.

I have been out of the Disney Channel loop since, at least seventeen years as I had to look up Sprig Plantar. Alice seems more likely to be permanent, though with the witchy business, you never know. Holding out the hope for Sharon. This does contrast with how completely fucking certain I was that Tech was dead, much though it hurt my heart, so I am finding the reversal amusing.

It felt pretty weird that the show would introduce the Seven and then seemingly totally remove them right away, so this was a nice confirmation, and adds to Sharon actually having a purpose to this story, even if she’s probably not really an ex-Sharon. Though if she is, good thing she can fall back on That ‘90s Sh…oh, that’s a shame. Guess that’s what happens when people don’t want to spend every second of their easy watching sitcoms with “Did this actor say what a great guy the rapist is?” in the back of their head. The brooms mostly just had me saying “Wait a minute Egon, you said leaving the Road was bad,” and gives us Aubrey doing Margaret Hamilton proud. As far as I can tell this trial is just a generic ‘80s setting with no specific reference, though I haven’t seen the Ouija movies so maybe that’s it. I caught the Mrs. Hart thing right away, though Kathryn’s impression was still so great I had second thoughts. I’d like to think at least some of it was improvised. The first big twist here is Agatha’s trial isn’t the final one, and Captain Howdy definitely makes a big impression. Of course Jen is the first to want to throw her under the bus, though just a few minutes later we get the inevitable moment where the scorpion stings the frog, so who can really blame her? I also seriously doubt they’d kill Alice just one episode after making such a big deal about breaking her family curse. As for Teen, in the comics he has the rather uncreative alias Wiccan, so it’s convenient to have that to call him now. Also pretty amusing to go back to this show after Season 3 of Heartstopper, where he and most of the other characters are anti-Marvel hipsters (plus Hayley Atwell joining this season). So now the question is, was he under some kind of memory block or actually just playing everyone this whole time? I honestly can’t say which I’d prefer. And of course, we’re still just at the halfway point and haven’t even finished the trials yet, so what the holy fuck is the rest of the show if they’re blowing what we all thought was the big climactic twist at this point? Apparently the Shadow King just stayed behind at the slumber party with no one noticing, so she’ll presumably have some things to say about this.

I assumed the Salem Seven would return, though the more interesting thing is how we don’t exactly have a clear idea on an overarching villain for this like how Thanos, Red Skull, or Kingpin are the clear plot driving villains of their films and shows. There is technically Rio, though she feels more wild card, than villainous heavy. Even if the Salem Seven are villains, the other members of the coven would note in response to the “What are we going to do?” question, “What’s all this “We” stuff? They just want Agatha.” They do still need to confirm about Sharon being an ex-Sharon, say through means of seeing if she vooms if you put four thousand volts through her. Particularly since she no longer has That 90’s Show to fall back on. I still need to watch it myself, especially as getting past the “Did this actor say what a great guy the rapist is?” conundrum is easy when Red is my favorite character of the show and the biggest draw. Plus, Kutcher always has been an idiot. And you already know that they could easily excuse Hyde’s absence by saying that he’s serving time in Joliet, as was foreshadowed by the It’s a Wonderful Life episode in the parent show. Didn’t cross my mind about the crossing the streams/pushing the little red button aspect of the brooms. My mind went to using the road to explain the Fellowship not simply flying eagles to Mordor. Aubrey had a good goddamn Margaret Hamilton cackle that would do Margaret proud. The one thought with the setting was, “Is this Yellowjackets or Stranger Things?” because I haven’t seen either show. I have a mild and somewhat soft rant about not having seen Stranger Things planned for next month by the way. Nothing much, just a tiny little thing. The Ouija board thing does fit the overall homage to The Exorcist, though maybe there is more precise reference to the Ouija films that I also am unaware of.

The really amazing thing is that Sprig’s supposed death is played for so much emotion, and the catalyst for a moment that the show had been building to for two whole seasons, yet it still doesn’t feel like a cheat that he survives,

Kathryn’s impression of Debra was great. Captain Howdy had fun. Hard to entirely blame Jen, given the scorpion’s nature with stinging the frog, which, better that than the farmer and the viper. I’m sure Jess would appreciate not going literal with that one, though there is now the one snake that she is stuck contending with. Feel bad about that. Problem is I love Agatha too much, so I’m rather vehemently defending her at this point, though I suppose, knowing me, that that is not a tremendous surprise. I could see the show highlighting tragedy with Alice finally being free of the curse, only to die shortly after. Though as noted, given the witchy business, there is wiggle room for Alice to return, somehow. The reveal about Tobias (Still calling him that until the show outright says the different names) feels like a mix between the Qimir reveal and the Agatha All Along number in WandaVision. There is great anticipation of what lies in store for the second half. As to the question of the memory block and/or playing everybody like a fiddle: Both seem plausible and likely in equal measure, but I’m just waiting to see what the show does. One shudders to think the words the Shadow King will have to say.

I just hope that Billy remembers that Agatha killed Sparky.
