Concerning the seasonal set-up, and the confusing nature you admit to about the aforementioned seasonal set-up: I work retail. Since Halloween is arguably the busiest season where I work, you have Halloween displays up early. A decade ago, there used to be a day within the end of August where they had people work an overnight shift to set up all the big displays. They don’t anymore which is saddening as said overnight shifts, though it was hard work, it was great fun. Around the last week or so, Christmas displays start getting put up. This on top of we maintain small seasonal sections year-round. You say how it feels weird the set-up you have. To others, maybe. Eleven years of retail desensitizes a man, so I’m not even batting an eyelash, Jess. Now to this episode. Start by talking about the tears. Your makeup held up a LOT better than it did during Patti’s big episode of Lilia stealing the entire goddamn show in Agatha last week. You may or not feel the same, Jess, but I’d take that as a victory. The weird thing is that seeing this episode didn’t get me too emotional. Seeing your reaction seems to be kicking in the delayed effect. I also never had an imaginary friend. I was lonely as shit lots of times as a kid, but I never did have an imaginary friend. Sort of terrified by what that would have looked like if I did have one. Probably resemble a hybrid of Palpatine and Betelgeuse. You speak true how the opening scene makes you expect a more dark or sinister thing, yet it reveals itself as quite wholesome. Quick sidenote. You mention not being a parent, neither am I. You say the kid doesn’t decide on the parents’ mealtimes. Yeah, well, I can’t exactly relate as my family will probably gladly tell you the stuff about me being as picky as I am. Then again, we never really went to places where you made reservations when I was a kid, or at least, they never brought me along to places like that growing up, so, you win on that one, Jess, saying the kid doesn’t call the shots on when the parents eat. Quite a jolt for the boys when Sully shows up complete with the table of the old comfort foods such as the marshmallow nachos, which just sounds like a texture and flavor hell. Mind you, I don’t even eat normal nachos. Unless they’re plain, but that just defeats the purpose. I get what you’re saying about Dean having seen some shit. In this scenario, it is out there enough that I’d have a “What in pluperfect hell is going on right now?” response as Dean did. He was definitely too abrasive at spots, not to mention insensitive when saying that Sam had him growing up so how could he be lonely. Made me respond to that and his movie reference by saying, “One, the film you referenced, that is a deep cut that NOBODY needs to be reminded of its existence. Second, you really did not think that statement through before you said it. Did ya, Dean?” One big takeaway from the flashbacks was, “Jesus Christ, John fucked those boys up something fierce.” You ran with the premise well. Considering my brain, I’m not one to talk on things being bizarre, and I was still having trouble at spots. Ruminating on that, a voice in my head chimed in, “Maybe this a sign that you’re more normal than you think.” to which, I note, “...Small favors?” One area we had the shared response was when Dean made the crack about the mermaid; taking a couple steps over the line as you described. I heard that one, and said, “All right, Dean, now you’re crossing some fucking lines here, you dick.” Evidence of that is when both Sam and Sully just glare daggers at him, he acknowledges that the crack was too much. Surprised none of them observed what they’d say if anybody saw them digging the hole to bury the mermaid, and in their place if I was asked could I come up with anything, I’d throw in the towel, “No, I can’t think of a good possible excuse, no.” We also agree that the boys did look good in the cozy sweaters. A cozy sweater is nice. The scene of the flashback of Sam breaking Sully’s heart did smart a bit. Bringing us to the big emotional highlights of the reaction. First, the scene where Sam opens up to Sully. Jesus, you got me good on that one, Jess. It does carry a similar energy to multi-Doctor stories on Doctor Who where the Doctors have scenes together. Or like in No Way Home when the Spideys have their scenes together, especially when Andrew Spidey speaks about Gwen. The type of shit you never talk about that nobody else knows about. Just being able to give voice to it to someone, the comfort, trust, and love that allows it, yeah, it makes sense how it got to you as it did, Jess. Then there’s the reveal about the young lady, Reese, and the reveal about Sully accidentally causing her sister’s death, and with it, the unending rage and anger. It is great how all three men convince her to end her vendetta. Dean gets the great culmination of his mini-arc of the episode in sticking up for Sully, and how he gives voice to how he’s realized that there were times where he wasn’t there for his little brother, and how he expresses gratitude that Sully was. Gets you right in the heart, and it got me right in the heart seeing how it got you right in the heart. Closing with the further discussion about Sam’s visions. And I get why Dean is so adamant about Sam not going back into the cage. And good on Sam for putting Dean’s feet to the fire by asking that if Dean is so confident that there will be an alternative, what that alternative is. And good on Dean, for silently acknowledging that he has no answer. He has to get back to Sam on that one, like you said. Just a good closing shot of the boys realizing they may not have any other choice, and it scares them. All in all, a MUCH more emotional reaction than I was expecting today. One that I rather greatly adored, Jess, thank you so much.
