This story was a bit cursed before filming even started. The original production designer Barrie Robbins committed suicide before he finished the work and had to be replaced, and original Range actor Peter Arne was murdered in his home, unsolved to this day. And the actual production was pretty hellish too, with the alien costumes being so badly designed that the story had to be rewritten due to the actors being physically unable to perform certain required actions, plus having terrible ventilation that forced them to take frequent water breaks.

The 11th Doctor story, 'The Hungry Earth', reminded me of Frotios... and I kept expecting the Tractators to show up in it. Even when the Silurans showed up, I'd hoped the Tractators would pop up and be revealed to be the real enemies in that story, playing off both sides. With the Silurans, being red-herring antagonists initially, would have had to team up with the Doctor and the humans against them... sadly this didn't happen. Still, it would have been such a cool & fun plot twist that could have elevated that story, perhaps... in fact, the Tractators should have returned a lot sooner, which, without spoilers, you'll see what I mean, soonish...

Sounds as bad as the curse surrounding The Omen Trilogy and/or the Poltergeist films.

I remember this, that Peter Arne had - apparently - been giving food to an Italian schoolteacher who had been sleeping rough in a local park and a connection was made between some bloodstained clothes and the fact of the teacher committing suicide a few days later. It was reported at the time as "Doctor Who actor found dead". Of course, we all wondered with alarm as to who it was. Peter Arne had a career as a character actor for some years, appearing in many adventure series, in a similar vein to Patrick Troughton, such as The Avengers, Danger Man, The Saint - with Roger Moore and Department S. He was also in films such as Cockleshell Heroes, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and three Pink Panther films with Peter Sellers. He started his career in 1944 in an uncredited role as a junior officer in the film, For Those in Peril.

Thanks for a great reaction. This was never one of my favourite stories but Jess always spots and picks up on stuff that went completely over my head - & I must have watched this one dozens of times! For instance, the reference to The Hungry Earth and it being the title of a story in New Who. The link here is fairly obvious and too much of a coincidence for it not to be a case of inspiration. I'm sure they've done this before where a throw away line in Classic Who becomes so memorable, it serves as inspiration and makes it as a story title in the New series. A good example is where, in the Five Doctors, the Second Doctor shows up at the Brig's reunion, saying he saw it in advertised in the paper, as in 'Tomorrow's Times', utterly confusing the Brigadier's replacement! 'Tomorrow's Times' went on to become the title of a whole set of extras featured on the UK DVD releases dealing with how Classic Who was reported in the press over the years. Also the Myth Makers is a very early example when it became the title of a set of Reel Time interviews with the crew and cast of Classic Who. Would love to see those but they probably no longer exist. I hope you're enjoying your break Jess & see you next time, when you're really back I guess!
