My deepest sympathies about Rocco; I've been through that enough times to know the mental toll it takes. But your recent post that he's doing about as well as possible was great to see. This show's first season kicked my ass on a level I wasn't expecting at all from something based on a memetically terrible video game (never played it myself, but there's a TON of warnings out there that fans of the show should stay away from it), and this start of the season solidified my thought from three years ago: If the show manages to keep this quality level all the way through, it's going to be my new choice for the best show I've ever seen. The Wire had a good two decade run, but it finally happened. What really stands out is how determined this crew is to use every single storytelling tool available to them, and every one is pulled off perfectly. And the opening funeral scene here treats us to a whole new one with the sparse color and minimalist backgrounds. And this is combined with yet another spectacular music video accompaniment, bringing to mind Disney+'s wonderful new documentary about John Williams, where Kate Capshaw tries to describe hearing the Schindler's List theme for the first time but breaks down weeping from the memory after just a few words. The animators also remain unmatched at subtle facial expressions; just check out that subliminal almost-smile Caitlin gets when offering the badge. Vi coming out with the badge was featured in the trailer, and a ton of people got upset because they somehow assumed it would just be an unexplained thing after a time skip that made no sense for her character, so I hope they all feel pretty silly now. And that's really all I can say at this point without spoilers, so just know it only gets better.

Perfectly understandable that there will likely be the delays on this. We shall be patient. I didn’t catch any trailers either. Nor did I hear, really anything about this new season, so we’re in the same boat there, Jess. I also haven’t watched the first season in over two and a half years now. Memory’s a bit rusty in spots, but strong recall of what happened season last. The little song and dance to the theme song is a delightful way to say we are back. One episode back and it is great to see that you greatly enjoyed the premiere. We do open with the Piltover perspective following the aftermath of the trainwreck of what happened. The plot armor was strong, leading to your shock. Leads to Viktor spending a soothing bath massage in the hexy goop, to use the technical term. The heart does go out to Caitlyn with the death of her mom. Haven’t gone through that one yet, though I have lost my dad, so the pain of losing a parent, the commonality resonates. They sell everything about that very well. I see what you mean about Caitlyn needing Vi to accept the badge to validate the idea that Vi is with her all the way. You do get why Vi is as averse to the offer as she is. I do. I find that I can’t help being a bit mean to Vi when she accuses Caitlyn that she didn’t think at all, as I hear that, and I deadpan, “So funny you saying that, but whatever.” You hear Caitlyn say that she believes that Vi believes that her gauntlets will solve all her problems, and that you feel that Vi doesn’t think that. She’s got a funny way of showing it if that is the case, I’ll tell you that much. She then goes off to get boiled, which you note that it is surprising that more people were not doing that. Oh, people probably did, it just was not focused on. You speak well of Vi’s hope about Powder has taken a powder, and she is grieving that. And now she’s on the thing of Powder is dead. She now believes that. So she says. Lovely little bit of fuckery abounds upon the commencement of The Piltover Chainsaw Massacre. Liked all your reactions to that. You comment on Vi’s fighting abilities. Vi still fights like her younger self, with nothing held back. Admirable, but mistaken. Big question of how the rioters got as far as they did, hm, that’s a mystery. Now Vi has taken up the badge, and she and Caitlyn are leading the charge. You and me both on foreseeing the messiness. This show cranks up my cynicism. There is ZERO way this thing has a happy ending. Makes me think that I got to ease up on reading the Bard/loving the Sith as much as I do. As to the music. I feel for you, copyright struggle-wise. And we did not get an update on your beloved Ekko, which if I had a nickel for every time your beloved in a show bared that name, or one like it anyway, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice. In any event, a tremendous first reaction, back with this show, complete with your excellent and insightful thoughts and commentary. To reiterate, no problem with however long it takes for these reactions to be uploaded. We shall be patient. Thank you for the great reaction, Jess.

We got that conspicuous shot of Mel's armor glowing just before the rocket hit, which is also the first thing we see in this episode, so that definitely seems like it had something to do with why she and Jayce survived even with Victor getting it so bad right next to them. Though she doesn't seem to know anything about it, so I'm guessing it's something her mother slipped her just in case. I did a rewatch with Pretty Much It just before this, and the one thing I never would have caught without it is the chainsaw woman is the mother of the kid Jayce accidentally killed, which is why she says "For my son."

The idea of the armor makes sense. I’ll buy that. Did not immediately recognize the chainsaw woman, but when she said the “For my son.” line, the penny dropped, I recalled the boy from last season, and I said, “Ah.”

Some shared pain with what Jess has been going through with Rocco as well, albeit with my cat, Muffin, I underestimated how sick she was at the end and was unprepared. Over twenty years later and I still have never had another cat since. The update Jess had was very relieving to hear that Rocco is doing about as well as possible. That’s quite the compliment you impart to this show. There’s always my thing of separating best and favorites, though with television, it’s one in the same. And I’m such an old man in a Millennial body with my being a M*A*S*H man, as I never can see that being dethroned for me. My two favorites after that are The Thick of It, and on FX, a show now concluded called Better Things created by and starring Pamela Adlon. (If you ever see it, apologies in advance that you’re stuck with Louis CK’s name being attached to the whole thing as co-creator, though he got fired after the second season, and he’s never actually in it, so it could have been worse.) After that’s Mad Men with Columbo and Monk fighting it out for rounding out the top five. Going through Next Gen with Jess reaffirms that show’s in my top ten, followed by Fargo, and the Breaking Bad shows. Would have to give more thought beyond that. I will say that yes, this show is pulling out every stop, storytelling-wise. Such is the power of John Williams and his Schindler’s List theme and score that Kate simply talking about the memory gets her that badly. That is still my favorite story of John’s where he says, “Steven, you need a better composer than I am for this film.” and Spielberg sincerely and simply replies, “I know, John, but they’re all dead.” It shows John’s incredible humility, whilst paying Spielberg the greatest compliment ever by saying that he felt he was not good enough to score the film. Shared appreciation with the subtle facial expressions. As someone who, like Jess, did not see the trailer, the badge thing setting the fans off is news to me. Sounds like everyone crying about Bo-Katan refusing to just take the Darksaber in The Mandalorian, and I just kept saying, “I would assume Filoni’s got his fucking reasons for that.” and was simply waiting for him to present his reasons, which he did, just as this badge business is now clarified, leading to people feeling silly, thus summoning Graham Chapman in the colonel’s uniform. Should be a hell of a time going through the next two thirds of the season.

The big standout moment of the movie is Spielberg saying whenever he's having a hard time on his current project, he just keeps telling himself "If you get this finished, you'll be able to hear what John comes up with for it." Amazing movie, and it's also very quickly clear how much of an advantage it has over the recent Jim Henson film in Williams still being alive and able to give new interviews for it.

Thomas Corp

That is a hell of an incentive. And it’s like Spielberg says, “John rewrites my films musically. If I have six drafts of a movie by a writer, John is the seventh and final draft, and that’s the draft I go out with.” It is a major benefit that we are still blessed to have John still with us, thus he’s able to give new interviews for the film.
