Well, I'm feeling a bit smug over perfectly figuring out the rules of this game from just a couple snatches of conversation last time. Although I was also thinking that the platform would spin faster every time and make them dizzy; maybe that was just considered too tricky or dangerous to film. Even without that, it's a perfect setup for these people to devolve into every reject and cutthroat from Bombay to Calcutta. It's worse than Detroit. And kudos to the perfect annoyingly catchy song. Some surprising comedy beats here, most of all the B Team silently agreeing to ditch the witch lady once they only need four. But quickly followed by what I'm sure a lot of people suspected was coming, mother and son getting separated. Even knowing they were both okay, that emotion of not knowing for an agonizing few minutes really hits you. And I love that they don't feel the need to spell out in dialogue that Yong-sik's guilt is over voting to stay, trusting the audience to remember that detail. The thing with Min-su I did kind of see coming, as there's been such strong focus on his being so impossibly good and sweet that I've kind of just been waiting for a reveal that he's a serial killer or something. Oh, and we all know In-ho didn't actually need to go into a room at all that time he goes off on his own, right? Il-nam would never have pulled that crap. Nice to see something finally notice what we've all been screaming this whole time: He's a creep. He's a weirdo. What the hell is he doing here? On to the second half, and look on the bright side, guys. If you don't like the way the vote works out, apparently arresting the President is something you can just do in Korea. The previous votes didn't really have that much suspense since we know there's no show if the games end, and last season already pulled the card of temporarily stopping them. But now with just the finale left, it really did feel like there was a chance for it, and I was counting down every changed vote right along with them, and dreading the inevitable moment when In-ho screwed them. So that was the biggest surprise of all, and I have no idea what's coming in the morning. Well, except that we may have lost one vote to stay. I totally misread the initial reveal and thought In-ho was messing with Gi-hun by giving him alone a potential weapon, but apparently it was everyone, and that's going to be some real chaos. And I don't even think Thanos would actually be killed by that; it would also take a bowling ball driving a nail into his head. This finale is definitely going to be a bloodbath, and I couldn't be happier to be seeing it along with you.

im really sorry you are having a rough time! I really hope you are able to take care of yourself and remember, its okay not to be okay! Just remember you arent alone, and that things do get better, as hard as it can be to remember that sometimes. You are awesome, and every video you put out for us is deeply appreciated! I for one love watching your reactions and your incredible thoughts and perceptions of different shows and episodes. The fact that you are putting these reactions out while having a difficult time is amazing, and i really hope you know how grateful we are to go on these journeys on these shows with you!

God, what a gorgeous top, Jess. Keeping with the pink theme that perfectly matches with the Squid Game of it all. Love to see it. Ripping off the Band-Aid as yes, this episode was intense. Following your strategy, I’ll start by talking briefly about the boat crew. They had quite the scare with the bomb, leading you to suspect foul play, and given how it played out, you further suspect the captain. Circumstances being what they are, I think you might be right. Discussing the vote some. Similar uncertainty as to how precisely that would play out. Doubtful that they would vote to go home. The rapper fucker is really on my last nerve, and it’s a shared assessment of you would not kiss the button as he did. You have no idea where that button’s been. You did wonder exactly what In-ho was going to do. There was the question of what happens when a tie happens, and now they reveal that they vote again. My suspicion is too high of how it ends up the tie. The chief thought is that there are plants. Even if there aren’t, it stretches the suspension of disbelief that it happened as neatly as it did. It seems that they were counting on the tie so as to allow the bloodbath to come. And sadly, Gi-hun does not have Hank Azaria as an ally for when the fork business reaches fever pitch. One guy who gets to miss out on the remaining festivities is the rapper. Speaking of him, you mentioned the captions. I mean, I have the captions on regardless, the ones I have make the note when the rapper switches to English. But yes, it is amusing how he still is subtitled when that happens. He pushed the crypto guy once too many times. He forked around and found out. And you knew it was coming. After all: His death was... Inevitable. Shaman lady keeps spouting weird shit. She is particularly salty since during the game, the number was what it was, and shaman lady got told, “Bye, Felicia.” got voted off the island, as you said. Hardly surprising. Love how her saying about the curse got you riled up. Me, I’d look shaman lady in the eye, and say to her, “Unless this curse you got is the second coming of the Curse of the Billy Goat, I really don’t think I’m all that bothered.” The game itself was well done. Figured roughly about right that the game was akin to musical chairs. No-eul is playing ball again, whilst keeping her eye on the dad. Nice to see the dad be a sweetheart in the game. You bring up the idea of how in on In-ho’s chicanery are the guards. I could see that one going either way. Certainly, if they are in on it, he could have faked shit this time round. Just as he went lenient on the rules for Il-nam, even when Il-nam seemed to be ok with playing by the rules. Maybe he did have an escape hatch, which, you say that sounds cartoony. well, the darkest Indiana Jones villain had such a thing, and he actually looked delighted to be able to use it when he did, certainly he let out a good cackle at that part. Quite the moment when In-ho exploits the loophole, giving Jung-bae a scare Of course he was scared, anybody would be scared seeing In-ho move like a Storm Shadow with the T-1000 look in his eyes. You speak well of how they do great with showing the game from the multiple perspectives, such as the showcase of the power of fear during the rock paper scissors part. Then there’s what you call probably the best moment of the season. I haven’t even seen the last episode yet, and I’m with you on that being the BEST moment of the season. Yeah, the tension with mother and son, that was immense. You and I had the shared dread there, and there was most CERTAINLY shared screaming when they got separated, and you think that Geum-ja will die. She is saved by Gi-hun and In-ho, but that emotion in that scene, Jesus, it was bad. Love Geum-ja snapping at In-ho as she did when he spoke poorly about her boy. Then the reunion, yeah, Kang Ae-shim and Yang Dong-geun both delivered with such powerhouse performances there, all with minimal dialogue. And how Yong-sik just feels the weight of what his vote almost cost him, leading to during the next vote, that triumphant moment of him voting x, ripping the o off, and shouting to the crowd, we both loved that. You spoke of wanting to pause a few times. I DID pause. Multiple times. I mentioned in the last episode how similar to how you envisioned Rocco as Artax, I’m seeing my mom in Geum-ja, so when that scene was as superbly done as it was, I had to pause because I was sobbing too hard. Another such time where I had to pause was the final round when you needed two people. How you saw Yong-sik held his mom as they both booked it, and when you see the shot of them getting into the room, I realized I wasn’t breathing for a while as I let out a huge breath at that which turned into a sob, and I paused just to let that sobbing continue. Bringing us to Young-mi. Yeah, her death is a gut-punch. Jesus Christ, the pain in your voice on that one, Jess, cuts DEEP into a man’s soul. Park Sung-hoon went above and beyond selling Hyun-ju’s anguish and guilt, and unsurpisngly, when Hyun-ju goes to vote again, she votes x. Great moment when Jun-hee acknowledges that the crypto guy isn’t wrong with what he said, and when he thanks her, she makes it clear that she said that he wasn’t wrong, she didn’t say he wasn’t an asshole. Again, your reaction to Young-mi was just harrowing. More so than mine as I was still reeling from the scenes with Geum-ja and Yong-sik, though the scene did get me good. And I hear what you’re saying about taking some comfort of still being able to cry. I’m sorry to hear that the bad time you’re going through persists. You mention about that feeling of crying so much that you’re just numb to the emotions. I’ve been there several times. One of the worst times, if not the worst time, being four years ago come this spring, summer. It’s strangely wonderful when you do cry, or just feel anything when that happens. Reminds me of in Van Helsing when Van Helsing is trying to free Frankenstein’s Monster, he gives the Monster the warning that it will hurt, and the Monster asserts, “I am accustomed to pain.” and Van Helsing offers the supportive reply, “Let’s you know you’re alive!” It’s like that here where we have just such visceral emotions to this show, and it just shows we’re not as dead inside as we believe we are. All of that is perhaps a poor way of my saying to you that I’m glad the cry was helpful, that you are enjoying this season, and that I reiterate my hope that the bad times end sooner rather than later. Hear you as well on anticipating the season finale feeling more like a Back to the Future Part II/Matrix Reloaded style ending. We shall see. In the meantime, this was an immensely wonderful reaction, thank you for that. Take care of yourself, Jess.

The information given last episode, like I said, I heard that and thought, “Essentially, this a sort of musical chairs then?” See I was right. Safety concerns are probably why they don’t increase the spinning, which here, is not so good a trick. I also think that it’s this episode that is the biggest reason why they did not cast an age-appropriate actress as Geum-ja given that if she was young and has strong memory of the Korean War, she’d have to be at least in her seventies, and nearer eighty then seventy. Hence, it’s safer to cast someone younger. Regardless, this is indeed a game that causes the players to devolve, and it places you in the mindset of being someone in this situation, surrounded by murderers, rapists, and thieves. It’s like being in the stands at a Los Angeles Raiders game. There is a good laugh when they ditch the shaman lady. Even knowing the separation was likely coming, yeah, nothing prepared me for that scene. It’s where Jess is better than I am as she was able to convey what she felt on camera. Me, the whole thing with Geum-ja and Yong-sik, in Jess’s place, I don’t think I could get out three words without devolving into sobs. Shared appreciation of the show letting the emotions speaking for themselves without hand holding or spelling anything out. I keep hearing how Il-nam was subject to special treatment. I wonder how on board he was with that as he seemed to genuinely be ok with dying in any of the games. I felt like In-ho was being nice to him, thus it would not surprise me if he’s got guys in on his fuckery. The idea of arresting a president if you don’t like how the vote went... Sounds an agreeable notion at the present time. The question of In-ho and how he would vote, you wondered what the result would be, and I speculated, what would hurt Gi-hun more. Seems the tie is the answer, leading to the presumed bloodbath. I suspect that the rapper is dead as the crypto guy was smart as he went for the head. (Contrast to Thor, who went for the neck.) Haven’t seen the finale yet. One thing for sure, it’s sure to be a memorable experience sharing it with Jess.

A real "He's out of line, but he's right" moment with the crypto guy. And I feel like I've been easier on him up until now than a lot of people, since from what I've gleaned he was just duped into being the public face by the real scammers who left him holding the bag, plus anyone who puts that much money into any newly introduced crypto at this point kind of does deserve what they get. The really impressive thing about Young-mi is that we really don't know anything about her besides her breakdown over the vote, and it turns out that along with her bond with Hyun-ju, that's plenty to have enough of an attachment that it hits just as hard as her equivalent last season Ji-yeong.
