A fairly unsettling standalone episode, to be sure. Going by your reactions for the season, it would be likely that this episode would be ranked somewhere between two and five in your top five of the season. (The Bobby and Rufus episode obviously being number one.) The creepy aspects of this are effective. You speak how they don’t hugely focus on it as much, leading to the air of mystery that enhances the terror. That is always a gamble with horror stories, though here it is done well. I do get distracted by the timeframe of when these monsters arise and strike, and I asked, “Every twenty-seven years, what is this, Derry?” You do feel bad for the sheriff trying to figure out what’s up. Speaking of the sheriff, I confess that I did not recognize the sheriff, so when you said, “I saw your name, girl! I saw your name!” upon seeing her, made me say, “...What am I missing here?” Paused and looked up Kandyse McClure, Battlestar is the first thing that came up, making me then say, “...Oh.” I could see how it disturbed you, learning about the breeding nature of the monsters. Knowing past reactions, concern for you was great on that one, especially if things got too graphic. As it is, it ended up being not THAT bad, still the worry was there. You summarize well how they do the good focus on how people react to unspeakable tragedy. For instance, the one man who is left broken and retreats from the world. Then there is Jesse. Yeah, they did an effective job of setting up investment in the brothers with minimal time, thus side-stepping the customary desensitization that’s usually had with Supernatural. The heart does go out to Jesse, though it is nice to see he has the support from Cesar. Rather love how, though Dean is momentarily surprised that they’re a couple, he and Sam don’t much blink. I like how you liked that the boys knew what Jesse and Cesar were talking about, and never asked for further clarification on anything. Well shown when Ceasr speaks of how losing one when young permanently wounds you, and his observation about how few hunters have their revenge, and Dean offers little comment whilst agreeing. You can also tell that the boys’ hearts go out to Jesse over the emotional wound of losing his brother. Major kudos to Jared for quietly selling how Sam particularly understands the pain that Jesse is going through, being the little brother himself. Nice when he gives some voice to that to Dean, and Jensen sells that although Dean plays it off with a line, he ponders the perspective in a way he might not have before, as he is the big brother, his point of view is different in that regard. Which brings us to something that got you and I in the personal manner. You’ve talked about between you and your brother, that you are the younger sibling. Same as me. Hence, when we watch Jesse in this episode, it becomes quite easy to put ourselves in his place of what would have happened had our big brother got taken by monsters like that. Like Dean said, he always did come back when Sam was younger, and yet Sam sees in Jesse a window into the idea of what could have been had Dean not come back. The hardest scene is probably when Jesse finds the old coin. Figured that part would get you especially bad, Jess. It got me rather good too. You speak of the tough emotional pain you’ve been contending with likely exacerbated the tears. That likely didn’t help much, I would imagine. But given the rather strong relatability to the plot in this, I think that reaction was inevitable. Certainly, I wanted to give you a hug on that one. Hard to say if Jesse would be healed by this. He does at least have that closure, and yes, maybe he can finally properly grieve; after being in the “Fight now. Cry later” mentality for so long, the later is now, and he can cry. Lovely that he and Ceasr get to leave the hunting business. And it’s sweet how the boys’ respect that decision, even though they were considering asking for their help in the fight to come. Well shown how when Sam asks Dean about it, it doesn’t even sound like a question, and the boys just sound genuinely happy for their fellow hunters. Would be nice if we see the two gentlemen again. Not sure if we ever do, and I don’t recall anybody talking about that one. On the other hand, if this is their sole appearance, then they get one of the happier endings. (Or at least as much as one can in this show.) All in all, a sweet reaction. I reiterate that I’m sorry that you’re still contending with the emotional pain, and I hope it passes soon. Take care of yourself, Jess, and thank you for the sweet reaction.
