“Definitely, not a fun and silly episode.” feels like a rather massive understatement. Likewise, you asked late in the game, “What the FUCK is this episode!?”, and I deadpanned in response, “Depressing.” Start by touching on the Mary of it all. Dean was a surly sort, even by his standards in this episode. You can tell that Sam clocks it before giving voice to it, I even said, “Something on your mind, Dean?” You observe, I agree, you get Dean’s being upset as he is. And Sam doesn’t begrudge Dean that, he’d just prefer it if Dean was less of a dick about it or at least be more honest to himself about what he’s feeling. Sam’s relatable little brother energy was strong with this one, and it is sweet how though not thrilled with Dean’s attitude, he largely lets it slide. Love how you had the compassion you had for Dean, and even then, you were on him to at least talk some. My own comment past a point was, “You are in RARE form today, Dean.” You’d also hope that the boys would stop using the pop-culture names. Bringing us to the case that establishes the heaviness right away. Dean nearly jumping the gun and shooting a witch is further proof he’s not taking his mom’s departure well. Beth seemed a nice lady and it’s good that Dean realizes she’s not the villain here. The whole situation of Magda felt very Carrie meets The People Under the Stairs. Magda, by the way, is portrayed by Paloma Kwiatkowski, who yes, you’re right that she was in Bates Motel. Still behind on that one, though I know it’s one of your favorites. Considering the subject matter, Vera and Olivia, certainly that makes sense that it’s one of your favorites. Horrific to see the abuse that she’s subjected to. Mostly at the hands of her mother, earning your hatred. The father, likewise, is culpable through his inaction. He also got a memorable reaction from you when he made the mention of people sitting in front of a screen watching fake people do fake things, made me say, “Rather mean of the show to call Jess out like that.” Now your reaction, you had that look, and you say, “Ok. You don’t need to call me out like that.”, which gave me a good laugh. The brother’s harder to fully judge or condemn, though he did get the noble final moment. The dramatic irony gets real painful when the family feels that God was speaking to them, when the boys know damn well that wasn’t the case. Similarly, the claim that Magda’s abilities are the work of Lucifer, and Sam knows that it really isn’t. Like too how he is somewhat wrong with his initial surmise about Magda being responsible for the death of the case worker and the delivery boy. Yes, the poor celery in the latter case. He correctly guesses it revolves around Magda, he just assesses incorrectly the method, not to mention motive and intent. Jared and Paloma did good work in their dramatic scenes together. And it is good that Sam talked Magda down from killing her mother. Much though the bitch would’ve had it coming, he knows that she doesn’t want the death of her mother to be on Magda’s soul. And in the end, Dean steps up and offers her the nice words. And he opens up to Sam and says much what you said last week. I know you’ve spoken about how it’s ok for people to not be ok, and that it’s healthier when they’re honest about it. Sweet text from Mary that I like you jumped on Dean to tell Sam about it. Now to the last scenes. It was already bad enough how this episode was getting to you. I mentioned on youtube that your question about Jody having a spare room just made me sob, knowing what was coming. Yeah, Magda goes through all that, there’s light at the end of the tunnel, and she is callously killed. Breaks our hearts. Quick note, it is weird that we don’t see any chaperone with her to her aunt’s house. Maybe there was such a chaperone, we just don’t see them. Another episode that does not endear you to the British Men of Letters, which I see the comment made about the name, and all of that is a very well-spoken point. It seems that I was correct about my thought about them. Leads to the riddle, to guess if you can: Who is the monster, and who is the man? Presumably, the riddle will be a big theme of the season. Dreary episode though it was, your reaction was terrific, Jess, thank you.
