Oh, we are definitely five for five. Particularly great is the timing happens of your reaction to my favorite Beverly episode lands within my birthday month. A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. Loved how you were instantly here for a Beverly episode, and my favorite Beverly episode at that, and you got very excited. Needless to say, that Gates lists this one as one that she’s quite proud of. We also come to the third of, as you describe them, my chapter and verse episodes following Déjà Q and Yesterday’s Enterprise. “Weird and wild” is a fair description for this one. We start out with the great scene of Beverly’s mentor, played by the wonderful character actor, Bill Erwin. Who in only the one scene, gets you right in the heart. He’s a nice gentleman. The meat of the episode is the dilemma that Beverly is in. Love how it is tense and subtly terrifying throughout. And it takes its time to reveal that she disappeared. Just like you called, Jess, you’re so smart. And you spoke well of even when you clock that she has disappeared, you are still left with questions, and they are answered at a steady pace. It is so great seeing you process what Beverly was going through. Tis a shared experience. You spoke well of Beverly being perhaps the perfect character to be in this situation. As it shows her high intelligence, and given her profession, she remains one very cool customer under fire, whilst showcasing that the situation is getting to her some. Speaks to the crew’s faith and trust in her when even though it does seem the logical conclusion that the cheese has slid off her cracker, they still listen to her and indulge her in what she says. Really well shown when Marina gets the great scene of Deanna’s talk with Beverly. And most certainly shown when Patrick perfectly sells the line of Beverly’s word has always been good enough for Picard. Jesus, did you get me when Wesley disappeared, Gates sells that moment well of Wesley disappearing activating the Mama Bear mode, as you perfectly described. Culminating in just Picard and Beverly. Love how she even gets the laugh of it makes perfect sense that it’s just the two of them roaming the stars, to which, Picard notes they never needed a crew before. If the situation wasn’t so fucking creepy, it’d be the sweetest goddamn thing ever. And I liked how that started to irk you. Lord does Gates strike us in the heart with her impassioned plea, shared tears on that one, Jess. And it is so great when Picard, though reaching his limit, still indulges Beverly’s requests, and freely concedes that if he has forgotten, he deserved the tongue-lashing that Beverly gave him. In his place, I’d have said that she could have used stronger language. Love how you found that moment sweet, and how you share the reaction that I have when Beverly is going to say what she needs to say to Picard and is unable to as he disappears. Your reaction is much the same as my initial reaction, though I was a wee bit more dramatic about it. The reaction I have keeps persisting no matter how many times I see the episode. Even when rewatching it to prepare for the reaction and you know that Beverly’s declaration, it won’t happen, you still get suckered in, and say shit like, “Oh, my God, she’s going to say she loves him! It’s going to be wonderful! It’s going to be beautiful! It’s going to be romantic! It’s going to be just such a- SON OF A BITCH!!!! EVERY goddamn time!!” Terrifying when the vortex showed up on the bridge. Gates performed all those stunts, and the scary thing is that she did that whilst pregnant and only found out that she was pregnant after she did the stunts. Which, incidentally, doing the math, means her kid’s my age. Huh. The rest of the crew then gets the help from the Traveler, liked your reaction to seeing him again. The Traveler guiding Wesley with the “Concentrate on the moment. Feel. Don’t think. Use your instincts.” wisdom and encouragement, that was a great moment. And you say what I say: That it is so FUCKING GREAT that Beverly essentially saves herself. You mention at one point that Beverly looks really goddamn good sitting in the captain’s chair. She does. It does the heart good to see Beverly work through the problem, and discover the solution, and again, she saves herself. With help from Wesley. (The Traveler too, but sweet that he gives credit to Wesley.) And it is such a sweet ending when Beverly asks the number of the crew. Shame that she never does get to say to Picard what she needed to say, love how you brought that up again. Then again, it balances out when Picard and Beverly have that very charged hug, with Patrick definitely selling through Picard’s body language, the statement, “I thought I’d lost you, Beverly!” and Gates, likewise, selling through her body language, the response, “I thought you had too, Sir.” And Gates and Wil get the great moment of the hug between mother and son, which is just so sweet. Just as your reaction to that final scene, and the reaction to the entire episode was just the sweetest thing, and oh so very wonderful, Jess, thank you so, so very much.

Well, I could really use a pick me up right now, because we just found out the second half of The Sandman Season 2 is being released on my birthday, so I can't stop thinking about how awesome I would have found that a year ago but it's ruined now. So it's a good thing we have such an awesome TNG episode to focus on. I knew for a long time now you'd be totally into this one for being entirely about Beverly, and eventually just giving Gates a one woman show (and unlike a certain notorious other episode where she spends a sizable amount of screentime alone, she doesn't get embarrassingly hammy in the process). The situation here is really terrifying to my kind of autism, where it feels like there's a very real chance that eventually everything will just disappear and she'll die never having any idea why it was happening. It's actually a relief when the vortex shows up, since it's a concrete problem to solve that will hopefully fix the rest too. Thomas noted that she did all these stunts herself not knowing she was pregnant, which thankfully didn't seem to have any impact on her son. And Brent is his godfather! Of course, the biggest risk to this kind of story is how to make the answer to what's been going on satisfying. And the use of the Traveler here is perfect, building on the show's earlier baby steps of trusting the audience to remember episodes from years earlier in a way that earlier shows never would have dared. Although dude, would it kill you to not say so many lines that make you sound like a child predator? (Wil himself loves to joke about that, so I feel like it's okay) I'm just barely old enough to remember how "creating your own reality" was a huge idea with new age religions at the time, which this is definitely speaking directly to, in the same vein as the original series' Cold War allegories. But even without that context it fits the show perfectly, and sends us out on a high note.

Another great TNG reaction, Jess. I've been looking forward to seeing what you'd think about this one, and it was well worth the wait. Glad to hear you're loving season 4 so far. A long-overdue Bev-centric episode. This is one of those Twilight Zone-type Star Trek episodes. I often think of Remember Me as a metaphor for getting older and losing loved ones year after year. Gates McFadden shows off her impressive acting chops in the best way here. Watching Beverly gradually, systematically solve the mystery, just like you did during the reaction, is so satisfying to watch. That whole scene where she almost confesses to Picard, only for the computer reading his vitals to suddenly cut off in the background, is perfect. The camera angles and music stings add so much to the surreal nature of it all. I just wish we got a few extra scenes with Dalen Quaice. He seemed like a nice, wholesome character. "If there's nothing wrong with me, maybe there's something wrong with the universe." I've borrowed and used that quote many times in the course of my own journeys ever since I first watched this episode many years ago.

Second how this reaction was well worth the wait. There is a slight Twilight Zone undercurrent to this one, which is fine by me. The metaphor of growing old and losing those whom you love is apt. Seeing Jess and Beverly solve the mystery in near perfect unison is a delightful treat. That moment of Beverly almost confesses to Picard, that does make an impression. I just love Gates getting the time to shine with how good she is. More scenes with Dr. Quaice would have been nice. Wholesome is a good way to describe him. This whole thing was filmed so well and has that unnerving feeling to it. That one line, in addition to the line “We will start with the assumption that I am NOT crazy.”, they are quite handy lines to have from time to time.
