I have to start with my adoration of the opening poker scene, which feels like the best possible version of what the notorious omelet scene was trying to do. A ton of great interaction between the characters, and also actually adding to the story by showing us how good Data's gotten at understanding human emotions before we find out how that can be turned against him. It was also pretty fun after my time reading The Royal Road to Card Magic to be able to tell everything Frakes was doing. Everything hinges on Beth Toussaint providing someone we want to believe in, and she pulls that off spectacularly, having to show so many different kinds of emotions, some of which are hiding others. And she's certainly an improvement on the other major guest star Don Mirault, who just comes off as a snarling ape man it's impossible to believe could be any kind of leader. And I really appreciate the episode refusing to give easy answers on exactly how much was an act. She certainly does genuinely help get the crewmen back, and tries to keep up some connection with Data after there's no point to it, but by then everyone's so done with her that we can't see where it would go. This is also naturally referenced a lot in discussions of Data as autistic representation, with that difficulty in reading people and inability to cope with them turning out to be nothing like you thought. I kind of wish they hadn't put in that brief scene of Ishara reporting back and just let us discover the betrayal at the same time Data did. Though I guess if enough people had caught on at the same time you did, that would be a bit aggravating. But in the meantime we get an impressive amount of material about Tasha, and it was lovely to see how much you got into that. And you have to wonder how much Ishara will be affected by this later. They'll certainly be trying to use her lack of an implant to their advantage, and maybe enough of that will show her they don't really care about her like she does them. Just the excitement of all these possibilities lets you know how well the show did its job here.

Understandable that you would still be buzzing a bit from the last episode as it was one of the best ones. Likewise, your question, “Oh, no, this episode’s going to get me in my feels, isn’t it?”, makes me dryly yet sympathetically answer, “No doubt.” Quite the drastic shift with the opening, and it opened so nicely with the fun poker scene. Most amusing that you clocked Data clocking Riker’s sleight of hand. We then take a turn for the dramatic in coming to Tasha’s home planet. I adored the look on your face at that part. I like how you spoke of not blaming Worf for his concern for Beverly. I appreciate that as well, whilst loving Beverly asserting that she can take care of herself and is FULLY ready to THROW DOWN if necessary. It’s equally sweet later when Worf expresses the concern for Riker. Leads to our big guest character of the week, Ishara. Beth Toussaint is quite good in the role. You spoke well of how everyone is somewhat projecting on her. It is the recurring thing of life, as you say, we wish to see people as we want to see them, and sometimes that blinds us to who they are/the reality of certain situations. Ask Obi-Wan, he’ll tell you the same thing. It speaks more Data’s love for Tasha, I feel, that he was the most susceptible to the chicanery. Sweet how you’d turn to Deanna first, and ask, “Girl?” and how you gave Deanna the praise this episode. Gets you good when Riker took the risk in saving Ishara, and although Picard has the reprimand, he still tells Riker that he did well, your reaction to that being lovely. It gets you right in the old ticker hearing what Picard said about Tasha, and Patrick sells it so well. And what he said, as I mentioned back when we had the reaction to Skin of Evil, that’s something I’ve often held onto when contending with Tasha’s death. Yes, it was senseless, it was ignominious. But she died doing her job, putting the needs of the lives of others above her own. And like Picard said, she took a lot of pride in her work. And you observed well that Picard not so subtly conveyed to Ishara, “You besmirch Tasha again, we will be using words!” They have done well of keeping Tasha’s memory alive, and though the sting of how senseless her death was, the weight of it and her absence maintains the powerful presence. I understand how you expressed the concern of feeling like an asshole if Ishara was genuine. As we are skeptical Slytherin sorts, you and I, I don’t fault that. As it is, you observe well how her turn seemed a wee bit too abrupt, and it raises the red flag. Consequently, you had the great reaction when the reveal happened. It is terrible how they took advantage of Data especially. (And how they took advantage of Geordi’s brilliance that it continues to be great how you sing his praises.) Brent delivered in the scene where the truth becomes known to Data. You spoke well of just feeling bad for him when Ishara and her superior downplay the betrayal, especially how they have the “Well, you got what you wanted. What are you so upset about?” style response. Concur with not even being too upset at the rationale of the opportunity being too good to pass up. It’s the complete dismissal of the violation of trust that rankles. Admiration of the pragmatism does not alter the disgust over the moral bankruptcy. And much though Riker was for the stiffer punishment, Picard goes the different route with the mercy. Riker calls it charity, it is not. And I love how Picard admits that he too fell into the trap of hoping for more from Ishara. It is so great though that though he agrees to send Ishara back to the group, he gets in having a very Picard way of telling the guy, “SHUT THE FUCK UP!!” when cutting off the communication. You and I agree that on some level, Ishara was truthful about the friendship with Data, and I loved your response to Data’s farewell to her. Leads to the great scene he has with Riker, discussing trust. You express having a mind similar to Data of how it can go a mile a minute, and it is sweet how you hope that Data will not let the experience effect his built-in relationships. I also adore how you refute Data’s statements of not having the emotions, particularly as Brent sells how Data looks like he’s about to sob. I see that Ryan has mentioned about how there is the resonance with the autistic representation, the feeling is mutual. That thing of it is already difficult to read people, sometimes because you read too much all at once, something you admit to sometimes doing yourself, Jess. You already struggle with trust and being open with people, so to then have a situation when feelings you thought were real turn out to be hollow and naught but ash, and the feelings and trust you put into a person has now been soured, you struggle with the fallout of that for a while. Makes for a very downbeat ending. So, six for six. Your birthday next week, which, if I recall, we should be seven for seven. I understand completely the fear. I had it two years ago with The Mandalorian on my birthday, and I ended up just so delighted by the gas of the episode that it was. We are in for a good one next week. Just as this week was a real good one, Jess, thank you.

Love the final scene with Data and Riker where they're discussing trust and relationships. Highlight of the episode for me. Ishara Yar has a strong Sarah Connor vibe about her. I half expect a T-800 Terminator to step off the turbolift in pursuit of her. Now that would be an interesting crossover. This was a significant episode at the time of its broadcast because it broke TOS's episode record of 79 episodes. This was episode number 80 of TNG, so "Legacy" was a fitting name. The TNG cast and crew had a big party. It was a highly publicised episode. Poker night on the Enterprise is the worst when you think about it. An android who can calculate odds of winning hands based on just looking at the face-up cards. A Betazoid who can sense who's bluffing. And a guy with a visor who can detect even the smallest biometric changes in the people around him when they get a good hand.

I do hear Sarah Conner related jokes about Ishara. You do have to remind yourself, “Wait, no, that’s not Linda Hamilton.” She does really look like her. Legacy is quite the fitting name with the timing of it being the episode that surpasses the episode count of the original series. Were I on the Enterprise, with the poker nights, I’d favor five-card stud myself. There would be strong competition at poker nights on the Enterprise. You would also have Beverly who, being the ship’s doctor would probably have one hell of a poker face and be able to remain very cool under fire. To say nothing of if Picard sat in, he too would have an excellent poker face, and his skills with strategy would be most efficacious when it came to poker.
