A doozy of a birthday episode is a most apt description. Which... Well, I, I promised you that you would have a good one for your birthday, Jess. You weren’t clear on whether you wanted this to be a cheerful one, so I was curious how you’d respond to that one. In the end, it is a damn good one, albeit your tears were strong. We continue the overarching Klingon plotline. Sad to see K’mpec die, and that realistic thing of a dying man, his ego largely fades, leaving bitterness and regret. His scene with Picard is great. Loved your reactions there. And now Picard is in the position of helping decide the next leader. Love how he takes advantage of there not being any rule against using the old ways. I’m with you on Picard having the continued presence in the Klingon story. You spoke of loving how the reveal of the bombing culprits and K’mpec’s murder could have gone either way. The writers’ intention is that Duras is the villain of the plot, yet plenty of fans like to entertain the idea that Gowron is guilty, and the episode is JUST vague enough for the idea to be a plausible one, which is great. The bigger draw of the episode is the return of K’Ehleyr, loved your joy in seeing her again. You were not aware of Alexander it seems. How fortunate for us then as your reaction upon laying eyes on the boy was truly a most delightful thing. When it comes to young Alexander, Mr. Worf, you ARE the father. You spoke very well of how the dishonor that Worf feels weighs on him, thus preventing him from fully accepting Alexander as his son. This despite having Worf as a dad being one damn cool thing. Having Worf as your dad would make for a fun time during the PTA meetings, true. K’Ehleyr tries impressing upon Worf that she’s uncaring of the stigmas, she just wants Worf to accept the boy as his, and failing that, accept him as a friend. Hell of a reaction you had to Suzie selling that part so well. You said, “My heart is broken.”, and I grimly noted, “Yeah, that’ll get worse.” It is also great how K’Ehleyr sees through the bullshit and correctly clocks that there’s more to the story. There is some great amusement in Picard’s blunt “No.” when asked if he could elaborate on their past dealings with Duras. K’Ehleyr committing to solve what is quite a three-pipe problem is both wonderful, and it breaks the heart knowing what is to come. Christ, I was not ready, Jess, for the way your face fell upon seeing K’Ehleyr fatally wounded, the pain in your voice at that part, likewise. Again, your only real request was that this episode be a good one for your birthday. You never said you wanted it to be a cheerful one. Interesting how four weeks ago on my birthday, and now today on your birthday, we have in the climax of the Next Gen episode that falls on a birthday reaction, the death of a parent. Obviously, that’s not planned for such a thing on our birthdays. Still a very bizarre coincidence to be sure. K’Ehleyr’s death is one of the more jarring, so I don’t argue your statement of finding her death to be the most shocking of Next Gen. Michael shatters the heart selling Worf’s howl of naked grief. Duras thought he could get away with it, and you supported his death. He gravely underestimated both the brilliance of Beverly and Geordi. Besides which, he really thought that he could just walk away after killing Worf’s love, the mother of his child. And Worf ensures that he does not escape the retribution. Not here, not now! Some things he will not, he cannot allow! Tradition! And indeed, Duras falls to the blade of Worf’s bat’leth, and I loved your reaction to that. Loved how you knew Riker was going to fight a losing battle in trying to get Worf to back down. To be fair, I think Riker would agree with you on having little to no chance against Worf. Man still has the job to do, and I think it speaks more to Riker knowing that Worf is too honorable to resist surrendering once it’s all said and done. Good call bringing Data as backup. The Klingon Empire considers the matter closed. Patrick hits the perfect balance of expressing Picard’s disappointment, yet complete understanding. And good on Picard to let Worf know that he supports the further efforts of clearing his name. Alexander is now off to live with Worf’s parents, the delightful people that they are. I love your smile at the mention of Worf’s parents. I hear you on how you hope Worf will maintain a presence in his son’s life. And we see the start of that when he tells Alexander, “Your father I am, Alexander.” getting all of us in the heart. So, although this is quite the sad episode, man is it a good one to share with you today on your birthday. Thank you for the incredible reaction, and a very Happy Birthday to you, Jess.

Very happy birthday, and you only turn 25 once so make it a good one. Even though as fateful cock-up would have it, this episode won't help much. And this is a tough one for me, because I still distinctly remember getting to this point in my first viewing through the franchise (still back when people thought it might be done for good after Enterprise) and declaring it the best Trek episode I'd seen so far. Trouble is, this was back before the whole concept of fridging really took root, and since I was a dumb teenager I didn't think at all about how many damaging tropes it was directly playing into. So when I returned to it more recently, it was impossible not to see all that, and take a good hard look at my past self and how much I had to learn. At least getting to that point still has a ton of great stuff. Moore and Braga are clearly relishing getting to continue this story they introduced the previous season, and bringing in all kinds of complicated political material way beyond what you'd typically see on any TV show back then. We also get a great new recurring character in Gowron, who quickly makes a mark and ends with you eager to see more of him. Robert O'Reilly is a guy who knows he was born with an amazing pair of eyes, and he's happy to make the best use of them he can. And it's pretty fun to see Duras stuck in the Tedesco position as the guy who's such an asshole that the other candidate is the obvious correct choice, even knowing nothing about him. And then, K'Ehleyr, and the big "His daddy's name is Forrest, too?" moment. It's incredibly well constructed so that the question of whether she should have told Worf has no clear answer, and no matter how much you're inclined to side with the person we regularly spend time with, you're forced to acknowledge she has some decent points. Jon Paul Steur takes on paper a pretty thankless role and makes you care about what happens to him, even as in the back of your mind you probably know there's no way in hell the show will be adding a regular little kid character, especially one requiring such an extensive makeup job. He sadly went on to a quite troubled life, being sexually harassed during his time on Grace Under Fire by the lead actress which caused him to quit acting, and ultimately committing suicide in 2018. And then we get to the big moment. The crew has talked about how they needed something that would unquestionably drive Worf into a murderous rage, and I just can't help questioning that they seemingly couldn't come up with literally anything else than a textbook fridging, especially with how much reason he already has to hate Duras. The subsequent scenes are about as well done as they could be, and I appreciate that there's no Season 1 style condescending moralizing about his actions, instead being more like the classic exchange from The Count of Monte Cristo, "Is it justice you want, or revenge?" "When justice and revenge have the same goal, does it matter?". But it still can't help feeling poisoned by what we had to go through to get here, and the permanent loss of all of K'Ehleyr's promise as a continuing presence on the show along with Alexander. Just something you have to chalk up to "of the time" to avoid looking askance at everyone involved. It also oddly enough is a bit of a fitting companion piece to today's Doctor Who episode, so there's that.

Happy Birthday Jess! As I see Thomas already wrote it was a good episode for your birthday but not a happy one. It was a great reaction for us on your birthday. I loved seeing your excitement over the return of K’Ehleyr and felt bad about what I knew was to come later in the episode after seeing that excitement. I was hoping you would be on board for Worf's actions after her death and you did not disappoint. Start to finish a reaction that was worth having the calendar circled for. I hope the rest of your birthday is lovely.

Wishing you a very happy birthday, Jess! I hope it's been a good one so far, minus K'Ehleyr getting murdered by Duras of course. It's a shame we didn't get a more light-hearted episode for your birthday TNG reaction but as you said earlier, episode 7 was set in stone for today. Interestingly enough, the writers admitted it was a mistake to kill off K'Ehleyr after only 2 appearances on the show. She was a strong character with a lot of potential and she had great chemistry with Worf. It's poetic that Worf's refusal to acknowledge K'Ehleyr and Alexander to protect their honour is what undoes Duras. All because of the dishonour that Duras forced on Worf. Helena and Sergey get a brief mention, but it's a shame that we don't get to see them on screen picking up Alexander, ready to take him back to Gault. I remember how fond you were of Worf's parents in the episode Family, so I can only imagine what your reaction seeing them again would have been like. Every time it's a Worf episode, you just know it's going to be a banger at this point. “I am your father.” I love it when Worf turns into Vader for a second towards the end of this episode. It's May the 4th tomorrow too so great timing to bring that reference up. Well, we're seven for seven now. Season 4 is packing a punch so far and I'm predicting eight for eight next week too. Thanks for another great reaction Jess and I hope you enjoy the rest of your birthday. Cheers. 🍻

Yeah, I feel like I’m being slightly mean in pointing out that Jess only explicitly asked for a good episode, and she never clarified if she wanted a happy one. You knew that Jess would be upset to lose K’Ehleyr after she had the really strong positive response to her initially. You definitely knew that she’d be on board with Worf having his revenge. This was a very strong one for Jess’s birthday. Shared hope that the rest of the day, that she has a lovely time.

Seeing Helena and Sergey again would have been one hell of a pick me up and birthday treat for Jess. Yeah, fortuitously good timing having the Darth Vader of it all with Star Wars day being tomorrow. Seven for seven. Season four is a damn good one.
