Sorry to hear you’re especially tired, Jess, though like you said, not terribly surprising given the busy season. Rest has been bad for me lately. Well, rest is always terrible for me, I never sleep well, but the usual problem has felt exacerbated as of late, so if nothing else, you’re not alone with the tiredness, if that helps or makes you feel any better. At least you had a damn good Next Gen episode to look forward to. A damn good Deanna episode at that. Not my favorite Deanna episode, we’ll get to that one later, but a damn good Deanna episode all the same. Surprising how it hits you, Wil’s absence in the opening credits. Sinks in that Wesley has left. I’m going to miss him. I knew that you’d really love this one. An emotional roller coaster is a fair description. It gets a man real good seeing how the opening scene with Deanna’s session with Janet got you as emotional as it did. The plot kicks off in earnest when the beings attach themselves to the ship. You highlight what was great about they weren’t villains, nor antagonists. Unfortunate circumstance is the cause of the crisis. Loved your instant worry and concern for Deanna. Great how you clocked how the advice she gives of pointing out that someone is not fine, even though they say they’re fine, and how Deanna doesn’t practice what she preaches. There is a stridency to Deanna’s words of lashing out at the crew. You can tell that they’re allowing some if not all of it slide. Gates has one perfect acting scene when Deanna makes the one remark of you can tell that the words did wound, yet she’s not taking it TOO personally. Or when Geordi spoke figuratively, and Deanna took it personally, how yeah, Deanna has been such the wonderful woman and compassionate soul that she is, and how much she’s helped the crew, she’s allowed to vent. Great how Riker is the sweetheart with her, Jonathan selling it well when he calls her out on having an aristocratic air to her. Just this whole episode, Marina excelled. We have spoken of loving the importance of Deanna’s role and job in this show. You spoke very well about how important Deanna’s role and job is to her, and what it would mean for her to lose that. Picard did great by having the silent response of “Denied” in response to Deanna attempting to tender her resignation. And Patrick sells well Picard being dismayed by what Deanna is going through, yet he refused to give up on her, loved your emotional response to his saying that they needed Deanna. Lot of wise bartenders in the world. Guinan is one of the best, and I like how you knew that she’d have the great wisdom in this scenario. Fantastic scene with Whoopi delivering Guinan coming through with her customary wisdom, here reminding Deanna of although she is without the empathic abilities, she still has the professional training and skills to do her job. Janet gets the good moment of showing to Deanna that she was smart as a whip in assessing Janet’s mental and emotional state, showing Deanna that she’s still got it. And indeed, Deanna and Data did the work in solving the problem, with help from Geordi’s usual brilliance. It is such a beautiful thing when Deanna’s abilities return, and how everyone is happy for her. Love the quick explanation of the senses overwhelmed, and as Beverly noted, with Deanna being half-human, the Betazoid healing process is slightly hampered, hence the delay in the healing. Great how Beverly expressed the bygones attitude when Deanna apologized. As Beverly notes, therapists and doctors make the worst patients. As do teachers. As well as actors. Those of us that have been in caretaker positions are quite dreadful patients as well. Love too how Deanna offers the one warning to Riker, who had the great response. Shame that Deanna cut off Riker trying to kiss her, leading to your “COME ON!”, that was great. All in all, a lovely episode that I adore that you loved it so. Love everything you had to say about Deanna in this one. You say that you might be agreeable to having the Betazoid ability. (Though you note that it could be a decision you’d regret.) I’d pass on the Betazoid empathic abilities myself. The voices already in my head don’t need the company. And I am sorry that everything has been so busy, and that it won’t let up after next week as the catch-up game begins before the next busy spell. Godspeed to you with that. Hope the days in June that will be sans recording will be very beneficial for you. And if it comes to pass that you are off for August, please, by all means, prioritize your health, and have that time for yourself. For now, thank you for the very lovely reaction, Jess, much appreciated.

This episode predictably has gotten a lot of praise from the disabled community, who cite it as a great way to reach people who might have trouble comprehending what it's like. And a big part of that is how much of a jerk Deanna is allowed to be about the situation, which everyone perfectly understands, and from what I've heard is very common with newly disabled people. Marina knows exactly how much to push all this while still coming off in character, and while it's never really brought up, it's easy to imagine a big part of her frustration is knowing that as far as everyone she's talking to is concerned, she's much more Ricky Bobby than Maggie Fitzgerald, talking about a sense they never had in the first place and can't comprehend. The analogy of blindness is brought up a few times, which does make it a bit weird that there's never a scene of her talking with Geordi about it. I'd gladly sacrifice some of the 2D alien plot, which the episode barely seems to care about anyway down to a rushed "We can do a bullshit bullshit to the horseshit" explanation, to get that. This script was a very unusual project for Hilary Bader, who was mostly a DC comics writer, but however it happened, she turned out to be really good at it. I also have to single out the fantastic guest role by Kim Braden, who does a great double acting job where the grief is always visible even during her biggest attempts to push it down. There must be something in the air, because I've also found myself with serious trouble sleeping lately, no matter how tired I feel. And it's too bad you couldn't get a bit more of a fun one at the moment, though as memory serves that should be coming soon. As always when this comes up, I urge you to focus on self-care most of all and take all the time off you need.

I think that's the quickest a Star Trek episode has made you tear up. Another solid episode. I'm trying to remember if this season actually has any dud episodes or not now. It's been quite a few years since I did a full season 4 rewatch. I kind of love angry, aggressive Troi. You can hear Marina Sirtis use the voice she would later use for Demona in Disney's "Gargoyles". Picard's decision to pair Troi with Data makes complete sense. Even with her empathic abilities, Data has always been emotionally blank to her, so in a sense she is back in her comfort zone, allowing her to focus more clearly on the problem at hand. Anytime Data has consulted with her about the human condition, she has done so without ever relying on her abilities. Great reaction, Jess. You genuinely made me tear up a few times during this one. Hope you managed to get some rest after this reaction.

Yeah, I’ve heard that this episode has the strong response from the disabled community. I heard Marina is quite proud of that legacy of the episode. It is indeed a great way to reach people who might have trouble comprehending what it’s like. Deanna’s response is definitely analogous to someone newly disabled/someone newly diagnosed with some form of disability. Marina strikes the perfect balance, yes. Good note on how Deanna likely thinks that the crew is treating her as if she’s putting that evil on them, rather than the situation being more Mo chuisle in nature. Speaking of that, it’s been some time since I’ve seen that film, and I forgot Maggie’s last name. So, the reference did not instantly click, though googling it, I went, “Oh! Right.” I have heard about that of it being weird that Deanna never talks to Geordi given the blindness analogies. One thing I note is that Geordi has always been blind, so there is no before to compare to an after, nor is there any period of acclimation experience with which he could share with Deanna. I’d be in the same boat with my autism in that there really is little to no memory of a before the diagnosis, so I couldn’t really tell her what it would be like to have been diagnosed well into adulthood, and thus, how you acclimate, particularly with how people’s perception of you changes. I could talk to her about how there is the greater awareness now compared to three decades ago, and how that does help. Kim Braden did excellent work in this one. Sorry to hear that you caught whatever it is that’s in the air that’s affected Jess, rest-wise, and myself as well. Albeit, as mentioned, I never sleep well, though it’s been feeling worse as of late. The mind has been particularly loud this recent month. Second the note about the self-care.

Yeah, this did get Jess teary-eyed pretty much right away, which was something to see. In terms of duds of the season, barring delays, I think we got at least one in early July. Marina having some of that Demona energy is great to see, just as it’s always the loveliest thing when Jonathan taps into the Xanatos energy. I love that show. That’s a good note you made about Picard providing Deanna with the touch of the familiar as Data, having no emotions, (much though Jess always calls bullshit on that, I’m with her on that,) the blank slate there would be somewhat soothing. And it works as the effective reversal of when Data would confer with her about the human condition. Jess gets me to cry a lot, this one, she did a very good job with that. Hoping that if she didn’t get the rest after filming and editing, that she’s getting it sooner rather than later.
