The show's crew heard the clamoring of the masses, that we can never get enough of Troi being mentally violated, and so here it is again. What can I say except you're welcome? As you might imagine, the show's tendency to do this has come under a lot of scrutiny in more recent years, though at least this one gives Marina rather more emotional meat to work with than how they usually go. It also helps a ton that their old age makeup has improved by leaps and bounds since what Clayton Rohner was put through, even if it's now pretty laughable to compare this look to how amazing Marina actually still appears in her 70s. And I have to thank Chip Lucia for not doing anything in real life that would make this as hard to watch as Puff Daddy playing an abusive husband and father who also committed a vague but execution-worthy separate crime. The episode certainly gets off with a bang with Maylor wasting no time getting in Deanna's face with no provocation. I get that spending so much time with Johnny Hooker can make it hard to trust people, but this still seems overboard. And then we're immediately thrown another curveball when she dies so early on, and after Kiefer Sutherland destroyed all his research, so now what's the main conflict supposed to be? I kind of wish the answer was more original than what we get, but Marina is clearly reveling in this chance to do more than her usual act. I'm especially captivated by that long shot of just her silently doing tai chi and getting to do all kinds of subtle hints that something's going wrong. Followed by what I actually find easily the hardest scene to watch as she destroys poor Ensign Janeway (no relation was ever established, but the fans naturally love to assume it), made all the worse by how she never drops her usual comforting tone. But if this actually got her to dump Vinnie Delpino, it may have been worth it. Then the episode commits the greatest crime of all, making you unable to properly appreciate a fabulous outfit. And dare I say, she's probably been wanting to scratch Riker like that for a while? We're perfectly capable of coming up with our own twisted Xanatos/Demona fanfic, we don't need your charity. I caught on to the twist pretty early, though probably just because I'd already seen this plot in reverse in The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. so I was primed to think of it. Sure enough, his "mother" actually used to look like Jane Seymour, and it's very gratifying that from here on it's just our heroes being good at their jobs and dealing with the problem. Even if you could wish Picard is a little quicker to not think she just has orf and things will be fine if he can just keep Varys from chopping her up. Most of all, I appreciate that they consider the prospective next victim just as much as Troi and make preparations to save her, since it's obvious who it will be anyway. Kind of a filler episode this time with a well-trod story, but it's still executed pretty well, and what's coming next week is clearly what they had more on their minds and more than makes up for any shortcomings. That's going to be a reaction for the ages.

Not a huge man of this one, but I love that when Deanna stabs Picard, he couldn't care less about his wound and is more concerned with what's happening with Deanna. It's small moments like that really show who Picard is a person.

Hell of an episode to close the day of filming out. Incidentally, the pages of the episode say that this aired on my dad’s birthday, his thirty-fourth to be precise. Rude. Can understand the worry about the makeup being in struggle city. The question of getting through this ok had my response of, “Uh, technically, yes, but practically...” Mind you, not too much in the way of violent tears, so you were good there. Now next week, if you were concerned about tears for next week’s episode, now that’s one where we’re ALL FUCKED. Yes, I knew you would have a field day with this one. Hoping you had the nice time at the dimly lit restaurant, Jess. I’d recommend a local place where I live where the predominantly red lighting would help with that; hell, though it is on your eyes’ cones and retinas. So, this episode really verifies that your rule about anti-Geordi behavior, most certainly applies to anti-Deanna behavior for both of us. Unpleasant though this shit is, it is honestly comforting that we share the rule about these men especially fucking with Deanna. Love how you were against Alkar in this case not so much because of the initial actions of the... “gentleman” in question, and more the red flag of a boy’s best friend being his mother. We shared the response of him not touching Deanna in the one scene. It’s absurdly triggering when Alkar calls Deanna his “anchor”, making me yell, “Oh, get the FUCK out of here with THAT!!” Then “Ma” drops dead, and you are as sharp as you are that you caught the red flags such as Alkar’s unusual stoicism. It was suspicious that Alkar made a big thing of his “mother” being at the ripe old age of ninety-three when this is a universe where even Earth people live a lot longer than that. In one of my top two episodes, the Kriosian Ambassador Briam tells Picard that he’s over two hundred years old. Ninety-three doesn’t sound too old by comparison in this universe where life expectancy is much greater, in addition to the advancements in modern medicine. So, that’s one that sets off an alarm bell for me. Hence, the both of us being on the “Fuck this guy” train. Another candidate for most hateful Star Trek character that never much gets included in those usual discussions. We both clocked when Alkar did the shit to Deanna. Marina, credit where credit is due, does sell how Deanna goes through it. Figured about right your reaction to Deanna under the influence grabbing the one poor random crew member to have the roll in the hay with. My own reaction about matched your own, whilst commenting about already surmising your response, “Oh, she’s not going to like that.” Small positive that Riker does make clear that he respects that Deanna is a grown woman who he has no right to tell her she can’t do certain shit. All the same, he catches that Deanna is acting out-of-character. Second your request of chilling with those sorts of unnecessary scenes. Likewise, you, me, I see Ryan commented the same; we all LOATHE the scene where she tears down poor young Janeway. (...Probably just a coincidence with the name by the way.) As Ryan observes, a situation is bad when you can’t appreciate a fierce look. Love Riker’s restraint and concern when Deanna gets very forward. My own perhaps improper response to the questions was, “Uh, Deanna, those are extremely loaded and dangerous questions. This is not the proper circumstance to answer them.” I love how Riker goes to Beverly for help. Beverly facing the dilemma of respecting the cultural beliefs whilst wanting to help Deanna. We both had similar responses of wanting to be respectful. Ultimately, we side with Picard when he decides “Fuck it.” and gives Beverly the go ahead. Picard finally learns the truth from Alkar. And once we learn the full scope of this, we now know the proper course of action to take against Alkar. In my case, I make the decision to embrace the Malcolm Tucker rage as I need all of my fucking energy to fucking rip his body to bits with my bare hands and sell off, yeah, sell off his fucking flayed skin, as a sleeping bag! To a fucking normal person! Patrick sells it so well, Picard’s absolute disgust at Alakr’s use of the word “receptacle”, which matches the outrage in your own expression at hearing that. I had no camera recording my own reaction, but I’m reasonably certain that I had a murderous look that screamed to Alkar, “Now you got to die. Those are the rules.” Alkar shows that the son of a bitch is a goddamn sociopath. He goes on about how he’s justified as his work is so important, allowing him to do anything in the world except get up early; take exercise or be respectable. His perversion of the Kobayashi Maru of it all gets us all pissed off, and again, another time where I go Neve Campbell on someone, yelling at Alkar’s bitch ass, “Do you know why you kill people, Alkar? Do you? Because you CHOOSE TO!! There is no one else to blame!! Why don’t you take some FUCKING RESPONSIBILITY!?!?” Sir Patrick Stewart goes above and beyond with Picard’s line of, “You cannot explain away a wantonly immoral act because you think that it is connected to some higher purpose!”, and your own remarks were insanely excellent as well. And yes, Michael expertly sold Worf having a “This bitch” look as well, good catch. Quick thing about how you said about not knowing how to feel about a woman being sexually promiscuous being a “negative trait”. It is certainly a topic that could be explored in several ways. The implication of that is sort of just sprung on us without any real nuance, so I can understand having reservations about that part. Love your request to call Riker and tell him that he has full support to unleash ALL the MAGNIFICENT Xanatos energy on the bitch ass. Love how Geordi’s brilliance is just a given by this point as we don’t even see how he cracks the forcefield. God bless Geordi. Picard tells Alkar that he will pay. Alkar throws it in Picard’s face about the Federation promising him safe passage back home, making Picard get perilously close to reaching his breaking point where he’ll say to this fuckface, “Make no mistake about it, Ambassador, I’ll cut your fucking head clean off and not give a shit how it reads in the report sheet!” if his actions are to result in Deanna’s death. And yes, you speak the truth that we all want that for Alkar, loved your rather terrifying giggle at Alkar’s hiding behind his diplomatic immunity. Beverly is the best with coming up with the plan. I love how Riker is aghast yet agrees to the plan when Beverly explains how they’ll pull it off. Great it is, I see Ryan mentioned it as well, that they are concerned about using Liva as the proverbial bait, and they took great care to save her. They save Deanna. Love Patti selling Alyssa’s excellence and her relief that Deanna has been saved. She never even really interacts with the crew much, but Patti sells how Alyssa cares for the crew. Such a tragic thing about Alkar, sealing his fate, his death, all because he chose Deanna as his most recent victim. He chose... poorly. Sucks to suck, as you say. There is the one last scene with Deanna and Riker. Pretty sure the choice of words that Riker had weren’t the best, but Deanna did seem to appreciate them, it is an “Aw” moment, as you observe, so I acknowledge that I’m being nitpicky about it. Get everything you say about wishing the episode was devoid of the previously mentioned aspects that we hated. Bringing us to discussions of favorites. As you know, Picard is my favorite character in the main crew. Beverly is the very close second. Deanna is VERY close third. And it has been lovely to share the very STRONG Deanna love in this journey. Lovely to hear you say, Jess, that Deanna is second only to Gerodi for being your favorite. Warms the heart to hear. Unpleasant episode though this was, your reaction was astonishing, Jess. Much appreciated.
