Red Dwarf 1x01 Reaction! - Google Drive

:D It's a very traditional British style of sitcom, about a couple of pathetic characters winding each other up. Very 'blokey' as well. I was wondering what you'd make of it... There is a lot of funny stuff in the series, even if a lot is really juvenile! By the way, the guy who played Captain Hollister was in Aliens: Special Edition in the footage near the beginning of LV-426 before everything went wrong. He played the commander of the colony.

Thanks for the reaction. I’m a big Red Dwarf fan but it did take me a few episodes to get the hang of the show. I’m not sure how much sense you’ll get only reacting to selected episodes. I believe the next episode you are watching is 3x01? SPOILERS IF YOU ARE GOING TO WATCH ANYTHING BEFORE THEN. Between now and then (11 episodes), they get another member of the crew (a service android) from a derelict ship, and Holly (the ship’s computer) meets a female counterpart in a parallel universe and decides to emulate it/her. Other points: The actor who plays Cat got the role because he had the audition time wrong and *casually* sauntered in an hour late. The directors were impressed that he was trying to get into character, but it was actually just a mistake. “Smeg” is short for “smegma” … a vulgar word in this context that you’ll have to google yourself. Apparently, the censors at the BBC didn’t realise what it meant at the time, which is why it made it onto the air.

It can be very silly, it came out around the same time as Star Trek the Next Generation. It has its emotional bits within some of the episodes but generally speaking its supposed to be the Odd Couple in space, + a cat, & holly. Smeghead is a way the characters can swear without the sensors kicking up a fuss, I think it generally mean sh*t. It is very character driven and the more you watch the show the more you will empathise and care about the cast, even Rimmer. x

Oh my god! Just hearing that music at the beginning, and I've got chills. I have got to rewatch the series.

Hmm - this is going to be interesting - I've honestly no idea if this is going to work or not - I truely don't believe that a sitcom is the best material for a reaction, let alone a 30 year old low-budget space comedy.... Mostly anxious to see if she recognised Arthur Weasley.

Dave Ford

Getting a classical choralist composer to do the theme tune was pretty inspired. That opening music from the first two series does the same for me - it's pretty epic, even if it doesn't quite match what comes next.

Dave Ford

Well, Jess is a fan of Fawlty Towers, so she should be used to pathetic misenthropes in British sitcoms... But the 'desperate men, trapped' trope is pretty common in British sitcom and possible pretty unique. Steptoe, Porridge, Red Dwarf, Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads. etc.

Dave Ford

It should be pointed out that despite 'smegma', 'smeghead' and, indeed 'smeg' are not actual words, but were invented for RD. This is another common feature of British comedy - avoiding the censors by inventing swearwords that turn out to either have a thoroughly filthy root - basically, everything from Round the Horne or The Goons - or takes on a life of it's own: 'Smeg' from Red Dwarf or 'nerk' in Porridge (corruption of 'berk', which is short for 'Berkshire Hunt' which is rhyming slang for.. well, you can work it out).
