The Fourth Doctor's notorious scarf was actually due to a miscommunication with the seamstress, who thought she was required to use every bit of the yarn she was given.

Jerome Withers

Very glad you enjoyed parts 1 and 2. Thought you would love the fashion show. I like the Viking outfit and I believe the sparkly one was inspired by David Bowie's Ashes to Ashes. My weekend isn't complete without your Classic Who review. Hope you enjoy the rest of Robot and Tom's first outing.

I was delighted to see Edward Burnham, at the time, playing Professor Kettlewell, whom I hadn't seen since an Avengers episode 'Thingumagig', back in 1969 with Patrick MacNee and Linda Thorson, about a fiendish, and lethal, device that eats electricity. Maybe Kettlewell's hair was obtained with a fiendish hairdrier? Well Jess, we didn't see your reaction to the dog, whose yelps just signified - Dog think: "Uh uh! No way! I don't get paid for this and I'm outta here!" As for Tom, well . TB: "TOM? TOM? What ABOUT Tom? . . Oh . . well! Ha ha! I thought he was rather good really! Of course, modesty forbids to say excellent!"

Josef Schiltz

Postscript: I always thought that Jess would like The Avengers. From . . say . . Diana Rigg onwards? Oh, been watching Sesskasays Doctor Who reactions since Rose. Was watching Zeb Reacts previously and Jess came up on recommendations and she said "What am I watching??!"

Dave Frear

That's a good call actually. I hadn't thought about it, but The Avengers seems like it'd be right up her street. Mrs Peel seems like a good starting point too.

Thomas Corp

I'd say there's a good chance that Jess would like The Avengers. Reminds me that every time I hear “The Avengers, my mind goes to the show before the Marvel comics.

Jake Thornhill

You might have remembered but 'You may be a Doctor but I am THE doctor, the definite article you might say' was reused in Capaldis run with David Bradley's 1. Though they replaced 'definite article' with original ofc :)

Josef Schiltz

Also, "Sontarans perverting the course of human history" which Peter used with his reawakening gasp before "I don't want to go!" emulating Tennant's last line.

Ian Smith

Tom Baker is a force of nature! There's no gentle introduction to his Doctor's personality here - it's full steam ahead.

Josef Schiltz

Since I've been watching Doctor Who since Hartnell - so pleased you adore him! - I've been interested in the reception across the pond. I'm looking forward to seeing your responses to Tom. He's quite something. Zeb Reacts was my introduction to reactors over there and, virtually as he finished, there you were. And, I have to say, watching his and then your reaction channel, helped me through PTSD. For that, I'm eternally grateful!

Josef Schiltz

Tom had written to the head of serials at the time, Shaun Sutton, and said, "I haven't worked for a long time . . . was it something I said?" A new Doctor was already being looked for at the time. It just so happened that The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, with Tom as the evil magician Koura had been released, and the production team went to see it. It was obvious that they had found their new Doctor.

Josef Schiltz

And I think she'd like some of the outfits as well. It was quite a sixties fashion call.

And, actually, thinking about The Avengers some more, there's quite a number of guest stars Jess will recognise, 'From Venus With Love' for starters. However, we'll keep schtum about them, just in case she does decide to take up the series. But the black and whites are wonderful, - 1965 onwards - which are those that Diana starts with. Especially 'Man-eater of Surrey Green' and - trying to remember - 'Too Many Christmas Trees'.

Thank you for an excellent reaction to the start of, what for me, is a very memorable era. It's interesting how you mention Sarah Jane takes the transition from 3 to 4 really well, given Rose had a very hard time with accepting the fact that 9 became 10. I think that shows just what a natural companion she was. A mention to professor Kettlewell & the fab hair. He actually played the scientist in 2's Invasion (cybermen) where they co-erced him into creating that machine which controlled emotion. In rehearsal, he was very keen to tease his hair like that to give him the mad scientist look. So, on to the 4th Doctor & a very contrasting role to 3. I felt for the classic run that they went with those sort of contrasts between Doctors & I think 4 is a excellent counterbalance to 3. Really glad you're enjoying this! See you next time!

I was so happy to see your reaction to Tom Baker's introduction as the Doctor. Jon Pertwee was technically my first Doctor, but Tom's effervescent personality made me love him instantly. When I was a kid, I saw number Three as a doting father, and Four as a mischievous best friend. In 1991, I had the privilege of meeting Tom at a convention in Chicago. I was 19 at the time, and it was my first sci-fi convention I ever attended. The guests included most of the cast of Blake's 7 (another BBC sci-fi series, one that's much darker than Doctor Who or Red Dwarf). Anyway, when it came time to get Tom's autograph, he refused to sit at a table for over an hour. Instead he marched out into the middle of this large room we were gathered in, ordered all of us to line up along the walls, and he came to each and every one of us, let us take photos with him and then he autographed whatever it was we asked. He was such a lovely man, and it's an experience I'll never forget.

"When I was a kid, I saw number Three as a doting father, and Four as a mischievous best friend." Exactly how I saw them. My own father died the previous year to Jon taking on the role of the Doctor. In a way, he became my guru. A sort of a fatherly substitute. Of course, it was the writers via Jon Pertwee, but the way that he channelled those lines meant a great deal.

Josef Schiltz

Oh yes, and then, "Shut up, you're confusing me!" He was always telling people to shut up! Listen was brilliant. "He took my bedspread." "Humans, you're never happy!"

Josef Schiltz

I think he's more of a commedia dell'arte figure. It's not Pierrot. I'm pretty certain it's based off a particular clown costume. Of course, it can't be an actual copy of a particular clown's costume.

Josef Schiltz

Well Jess, now you've seen Tom in 4th Doctor guise, you can nip forward - or is it back? - and rewatch that little bit with Tom as The Curator in the 50th.
