Yeah, a very strong focus on as you described, a family created with people who would never have made connections under normal circumstances, which like you said, is a prominent theme of the show. I can certainly appreciate it as it’s likewise a very prominent part of my favorite show, M*A*S*H. The scene where Carol discusses with Maggie how they may never have met one another, and how you summarized your loving that scene, it caused two lines from M*A*S*H to instantly spring to mind, both lines said by Hawkeye. First, “But let me say this: Honestly, when you live in a cruddy situation like this long enough, you get to love a few people... and even hate a few. I guess, outside of our families, we'll never be closer to anybody than we are to each other.” And second, “Crazy thing is, hell though it is, I think I feel closer to the people in this hospital than I've ever been to anybody else in my life, or ever expect to.” The theme of a group of people forged into a family, has been a most superb part of The Walking Dead, I agree. I too thought it was great having the focus on the people working for the Commonwealth. Particularly, the question of how many of the people working for the Commonwealth are genuinely loyal to the cause, how many are simply following orders in a better the devil you know type scenario, and how many are doing so because they have no choice and/or are threatened into obedience. That scene with Gabriel and the one soldier was very emotional to me. Loved the scene with Negan and Ezekiel. Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Khary Payton were superb in that scene. I hear you regarding your saying you would be siding with Ezekiel wanting to keep distance from Negan for all that he’s done. Like you said, perhaps people may not agree with you, but I hear where you’re coming from. I love how Negan lays it on the line to Ezekiel by basically saying that “We got people who need help. We got to put our shit aside and work together to save them.” I would have added, “Afterwords, if you want to go right back to hating me as much as your heart desires, it makes me no never mind.” Other small observations with this episode. The guy in charge of where Negan and the others are, that guy was instantly insufferable. And since he said he would not disclose a name, I decided to simply refer to him as Ginger Fucker-in-Chief. I’m wanting Negan to kill both him and the guy who hit him when Negan was asking about his wife. When that guy asked if Negan understood, I imagined Negan’s thinking something like, “I understand that if I had Lucille, I'd bash your goddamn head in faster than you could whistle dixie, dipshit.” I also loved the small bike chase that Daryl took part in. Brought to mind the speeder-bike chase in Return of the Jedi, and I enjoyed it. An enjoyable reaction, Jess, thanks.
