Jared Padelecki really hated the portrayal of Sam here, saying it was completely out of character for him to quit hunting, ignore his messages, and even not care at all about Kevin after forcibly dragging him into the fight in the first place, leaving him at the mercy of any demons out there. Basically, the whole thing is contrived to set up him and Amelia in the flashbacks.

Centreville, Michigan is 20 minutes away from where I live. I went to the college they talk about in this episode.

I like to believe Sam has PTSD as well as believing Dean and Cas are dead. He wanted to make a life for himself after everything. It's not an okay decision, but for me it's understandable.

Yes, this is the season right smack dab in the middle of the series. Depending on how far ahead you’ve filmed you might even be exactly halfway through the series. As to the episode. Similar to what you expressed, I see both sides of the Sam and Dean situation fairly well. I get Dean being upset that Sam threw in the towel as it were. By the same token it’s as you say, Sam having gone through what he’s gone through it makes complete sense why he did what he did. I also note I'm curious where he would have even started to look for Dean, though again, I get Dean being upset that there wasn’t at the very least a token effort made. I get the anger towards Sam that Dean and certain fans would have over the “explanation” Sam gave. Which to me felt like how Bill said in the second volume of Kill Bill when he said, “I didn’t say I was going to explain myself. I said I was going to tell you the truth.” and like Bill queried in the same scene, “Was my reaction really that surprising?” So, although maybe the writers are wanting me to be more critical of one or both brothers, and sure, maybe I don’t fully condone everything about their actions, I still understand where both sides are coming from. I would assume Dean’s time in purgatory, and by extension, what happened to Castiel will be explored. If not, I pretty much guarantee there’s a shitload of fanfiction across the internet on the subject in question. Kevin really did come through throughout the episode what with his outwitting Crowley and setting up the traps that would make Macaulay Culkin proud. Still, quite a soft spot for Crowley. I can't help it. He's a fun villain. Now on to one of the more Important topics of the episode, the dog. As I commented on YouTube, every single part of your reaction to the dog was just the sweetest thing, Jess. As to the dog's name, I didn't catch a name. Far as I could tell, Sam just called the dog “Dog”. I mean, it worked for Columbo, so I’m not complaining per se. I'm a cat person myself, so I couldn’t offer much in the way of potential names. Also, because I'm a cat person and not a dog person at all, like I said prior I think I have a mild phobia, I can’t say I’m completely against Dean not being overly thrilled about the dog. On the other hand, like I said, your own reactions to the scenes with the dog were precious, thus, I can’t be negative about the dog, not when it brought you the joy that it did. Other highlights of your reaction, one, your comment about not liking the woods much. Yeah, being out in the woods has never been my favorite thing either. I never did much care for camping as a kid. Hated the mosquitoes especially. Second, yes, Dean’s deep blue moment is the first time in a mite spell since he had a hint of color in his ensemble. All in all, a lovely reaction to Supernatural to share with you on your birthday today. Thank you for the lovely reaction, and a very Happy Birthday to you, Jess.

Amelia really didn't get the most endearing introduction here. I absolutely get being upset that a dog got hurt, but her not only coming down so hard on Sam for a freak accident that he feels terrible about, but giving him the responsibility of taking care of the dog with absolutely no idea what his living situation is or if he's at all prepared for it, could very easily make things worse and just makes it seem like all she really cares about is being able to get on a moral high horse over him.

The exact halfway point of the series is halfway through episode 15 of season 8.

First off, Happy Birthday Jess! Second, I am still watching these along with you, so I am not sure what is to come this season. I thought the first episode was a pretty good. One of the better premiers so far IMO.

I've seen this episode a dozen times and this is the first time it's occurred to me that the vet is Amelia and not just some random angry vet. That information makes me dislike Amelia a lot more. They could have done with explaining something like her attitude was because she feels legally obligated to put the dog down if it's ownerless (except that that's a perception I very much don't empathise with - nothing could make me put down a recovering dog.)
