This is one of the funniest Doctor Who stories of all time, no surprise given it's written by the legendary Douglas Adams of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy fame.

During the previous story, the Graf's actor brought his dog to the set, and Tom Baker ended up getting in a fight with him that tore his lip up and caused him to speak with a lisp. So they covered for it by having the Doctor bang his mouth on the console during a rough landing. And no, it's not your imagination, his scarf really is even longer than usual in this story.

"By the beard of the Sky Demon!", The Captain, "The Pirate Planet" I'm a big fan of Douglas Adams and "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" stories and it's great to see him writing for Doctor Who. It is a bit silly really - with one-off lines rather than a super-super-serious plot. But Adams does know his science fiction and really knows his comedy. This story was written at exactly the same time as Adams was writing Hitchhiker's. He had submitted script proposals and finally got the commission to write both of them and was under immense pressure to get both scripts done on time - so there are a bunch of lines transplanted directly from the Hitchhiker's radio script into this one. Actually, because Adams was so overworked trying to get both scripts done, he got John ("QI") Lloyd to co-write a sequence (with the "Haggunenons") in the Hitchhiker's radio script - that sequence was replaced in later Hitchhiker's versions (the record, the book, the TV series) by a new sequence written by Adams. Brian Purchase is great as the Captain. (BTW have people noticed how many actor's IMDB thumbnail photo is their role in Doctor Who?) Fun fact: David Warwick, the actor who played Kimus, was married to Leela actress Louise Jameson. He was also an actor in New Who - in "Army of Ghosts". Something that I've always wanted to point out in Who forums about this story, was that the console that we see on the bridge bears a remarkable resemblance to the US Apollo spacecraft Command Module Main Display. It's so similar that I wonder whether the BBC reused a prop that was meant to match the real-life Apollo spacecraft. Is this story too silly? Who cares, it's fun!
