Looking up reactions to this first episode, I was quite surprised to find it was actually supposed to be a question who exactly Maul was talking about at the end. I won't say myself in case anyone really didn't put it together, but for me there was absolutely no question, and it turned out I was right. But luckily, that doesn't make the episode lesser at all, and the promise of Maul meeting up again with this person just makes it more enticing than if you don't know. Moving to the second, wrong as it feels, I couldn't help but laugh that the defectors are two people we know from the OT, plus one random scrub who couldn't be more obviously set up to die in the escape if he talked about sending all his paychecks to his granddaughter. But again, that doesn't take away from the fun at all, and it really helps knowing that even with Hobbie surviving this time, he'll ultimately die on Hoth in a blaze of glory that saves who knows how many.

Thankfully at least one of those names isn't super memorable so for casual viewers and some kids it's maybe less obvious who isn't going to make it but I had the same thought the first time I watched it too haha

Damnit Maul, destroying one of Leia's frigates! Calling Ezra 'our apprentice', what a stirrer he is! Even the way he taunts Kanan later by telling him to 'follow the sound of my voice', reminding us it was him that blinded Kanan. And then spacing him after! :D Those that didn't read the comics back then found out here that Kanan's real name is Caleb Dume, understandably he changed it when he was a kid in hiding. Kanan saying Ezra needs to learn to solve problems without his lightsabre. He is exactly right. What makes a Jedi is not how strong they are in the force, how great a warrior, or how proficient with a lightsabre they are; its about seeing things from 'a different point of view' as Obi-Wan says later; and we saw in the younglings arc when the kids were looking for their kyber crystals. If Jedi keep focussed and have patience, a solution will present itself to them, a lesson Ahsoka learnt from Tera Sinube when her lightsabre got stolen, and Plo Koon. Kanan/Caleb himself is starting to finally find balance within him, the way he is now carrying himself and sounding more Jedi-like. Having said that, there is a reminder here of all that he has lost as we see him stumbling around the caves in the dark sightless. Its a very melancholic moment; he has accepted it, but Ezra still feels guilt about Malachor. And when Kanan tells him to let go of his guilt and Ezra hugs him, it gets me every time. And yes Maul is still trying to scratch a certain itch; doing all this just for that. Onto 3x4, and from the off, the Empire bringing in my favourite ships in all Star Wars, TIE Interceptors! I had a red one in a game once, and I terrorised the galaxy in it! These are a lot more agile and faster than regular TIE's and have four guns instead of two. No shields still, but only A-Wings in the right hands can keep up with them. These rebel pilots however, were not. Just give that ID card a good rub and it'll work fine, we've all been there! Ezra being impatient still. Here when it comes to Sabine being the one infiltrating the training centre. This parallels with Kanan being worried about Ezra in one of the early episodes, where he infiltrated an imperial base for a while. Kanan now knows worrying won't help. Just stay in the moment and trust Sabine will get the job done. For all Ezra has come on in his training, he still has much to learn. There are still a number of Sabine episodes to come yet, and one of them is in my top 5 of all Rebels episodes. Think this is the first time we hear a hint of Sabine's Theme, when she recruits Wedge. Wait till you hear it in all its glory Jess, its gorgeous, almost John Williams standard! Ohhh Pryce, I HATE Pryce!!! As sadistic as Tarkin in her methods. Kallus softening up a bit and helping Sabine and these Rebels? Perhaps Zeb did get through to him on that moon after all... Hehe so we lost 7 pilots and gained 2, well done Commander Sato! Tbf though Hoby and Wedge are two superb pilots. Wedge we all know, is one of the best pilots in the galaxy and a hero for the rebellion and resistance later on (which you'll see if you rewatch the original trilogy Jess after the show). Hoby is there all the way through to Hoth in Empire Strikes Back, where he takes out General Veers AT-AT in a sacrificial move, buying time for the rest of the rebels to escape.

Apparently there was some question among the fans on whether Kanan was Caleb, and its getting confirmed here was a huge deal. And meanwhile, people like me who hadn’t read the comics (yeah, I know, I’m not a real fan) were just confused at why the show was making such a big deal that his real name is actually this other name we’d never heard before.

Two very interesting episodes back-to-back. Lovely to see our dear Darth Maul again so soon after the conclusion of season two. Yes, a highlight was the continuation of Kanan and Ezra’s repairing the rift that formed between them following Malachor. You’re trying to blink away the tears, noble effort though it is, will be fruitless. It is, after all, like a quote from a great youtube video that I love, which is, “Star Wars is a story filled with hope and revolution, but it’s safe to say its characters suffer time and time again. Not Palpy. No, Palpy is loving life 24/7.” Terrifying how easily Maul extracts information from Hera, particularly the information about Kanan Jarrus. Or, should I call him Caleb Dume? Great moment when the Shady Bunch turns the tables on Maul, and fantastic how Maul tables the turns on them. Likewise, it is great to see Kanan get the badass moment of surviving Maul throwing him out into space. It got some backlash from people complaining how “unrealistic”. I assume it’s a case of people forgetting that if you hold a lungful of air, you can survive in the total vacuum of space for about 30 seconds. But with space being really big and all, the chances of being picked up within that time are two to the power of two billion, 79 million, 460 thousand, 347 to one against. Maul is much like Sisyphus at this point. And now what’s left of his cheese has slid off his cracker upon finding out a certain someone lives. I see Ryan commented how apparently it was meant to be a surprise who the “he” was supposed to be, which, well... I thought it was obvious. The second episode was a great Sabine focus. I loved the one moment with Ezra that you responded to. When Kanan says that “part of a Jedi's wisdom comes from learning to accept when a situation is out of our control.” and you responded, “I struggle with that all the time.” I nodded in solidarity, and said, “Likewise, Jess, likewise.” A BIG highlight was when Wedge introduced himself, I said, “Wedge, well, th... WEDGE!? Did I just hear “Wedge”!? I heard that right!?” Upon confirmation of both him and his wingman, I said, “Oh, it’s fantastic to see you, sir. And Hobbie, good to see you too.” That sucks about Redshirt, sorry, uh, Rake, that was it. Wedge is a wonderful character on my list of favorites. And prior to Rogue One, he was one of two characters tied for first on my brother’s list of favorite Star Wars characters. The other being a character by the name of Baron Soontir Fel, who, to my knowledge, sadly has not made the transition to the new canon yet. Loved your comments on Governor Arihnda “Miss Bob” Pryce. No, Pryce surely does NOT play. I LOVED your growing feelings toward Kallus, especially when you said you now like him, and you HATE it. That gave me a great cackle. The Alliance needed top-notch pilots. They got some of the BEST. Lovely reaction, Jess, thank you.

Darth Maul is a Sith Lord. You know the Sith, they’re all massive trolls. Nothing worse for Maul than that itch that still hasn’t been scratched. Fantastic to see the TIE Interceptors. Great to see the TIE Bomber as well. Just blow on the card and rub it. Just like how you’d blow in the video game cartridge when it acted up. Pryce is such a wonderful love to hate character. Wedge and Hobbie joining the cause, is fantastic.

Funnily enough, Wedge’s life in canon was saved by his actor Denis Lawson’s indecision. Max Von Sydow’s character at the start of Force Awakens was originally written as Wedge (which certainly gives a lot more meaning to his line “To me, she’s royalty”) but Lawson declined to return to the role so it was made a new character. Then he came back in Rise of Skywalker, which I like to think was due to some prodding from his nephew Ewan McGregor after he announced his own return, and got to be part of the giant cavalry and live at the end.

Agent Kallus is a hard man to hate after his time with Zeb.

I hadn't read the comics either (and shamefully despite my adoration for this show, I haven't read the Kanan and Hera prequel books either), but remember there was a pretty big push between some things featured in the comics that would go into the series, or at least provide a backstory for certain events and characters. Pryce here is with Thrawn during season 1, which is why Minister Tua was in charge. Also the story about the imperial cadet kid looking for his sister got resolved in one of these comics too I believe.

Saltire

"formerly Darth, now just Maul" - yeah right Maul! He may not class himself as a Sith now, but in everything he does, he still acts like one with his manipulations and killings.

Saltire

He's a hard man to hate with that gorgeous voice and his terrific set of mutton chops! :D

Interesting story linking Wedge and the McGregor's. We can assume Ewan got the acting bug from his uncle Denis who played Wedge; but Ewan's brother subsequently became a real life Wedge, being a fighter pilot for the Royal Air Force, and his callsign is "Obi-Two!" :D Wedge is a true old school legend of the franchise though; Jess will see if she ends up doing the original trilogy after she is finished Rebels. I think we'd all love to see how she'd get on with the OT, even though like the rest of us, she's probably seen it a fair bit over the years. At least the Holiday Special is out of the way so perhaps she may do that over Christmas! Fingers crossed.

Saltire

At least Kanan's spacing makes sense, unlike Leia's! I remember comparing Maul to Sisyphus in Clone Wars, especially when he got his comeuppance, as Zeus came down from Mount Olympus to teach him a lesson. Sisyphus suits Maul perfectly.

Thomas Corp

Denis Lawson is definitely where Ewan got the Star Wars bug. One major reason he went to see A New Hope when he was a wee six-year-old kid was because his Uncle Denis was in it. And he became a massive Star Wars fan as a result. Wedge is amazing. The comparison of Maul to Sisyphus is most apt. I’m told Sam Witwer and Freddie Prinze Jr share the thought.

Thomas Corp

Bit behind on some of the reading material myself. Something to look forward to. Much like how Ahsoka is for sure still a Jedi, Maul remains a Sith. Oh, by the way, maybe you’ve already seen this. I came across it the other day, thought you’d like it: https://i.redd.it/m8p1n1zeieeb1.jpg

Saltire

Haha thats pic is awesome! I have something similar for my computer lock screen, with Chop running away from a giant explosion with his arms raised as if to say "who me?". :D

Saltire

Yeah I can see how both Witwer and Freddie would also think that, as they are huge Star Wars fans also (and part of the reason Freddie especially got the gig as Kanan).

Thomas Corp

That’s cool to hear you have a similar image for your computer. I shared the Choppenheimer image with my brother, who mind you, hasn’t seen Rebels, save for one or two episodes. He was slightly nonplussed, and I told him that Chopper does have a comparable body count to the atomic bombs. My brother expressed mild horror at that thought. I told him I was being dead serious. It made him even more curious to see Rebels in its entirety.

Saltire

Here is the one from my computer (I hope it links) https://static1.cbrimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/star-wars-chopper-rebels-goes-rogue.png Haha your brother genuinely sounds horrified there would be such a droid in a supposedly kids show, but here he is! The first time I watched the show, it took me a few eps to warm to him (same with Kanan though that was due to my own bias against Freddie Prinze back then, and Kanan not feeling very Jedi-like early on - till I realised that was the point!), but I think I turned to appreciate him when he threw that nice little droid off the Ghost in season 1, and that was it, he was the droid for me! I don't think Star Wars gets any better with droids than Chopper, R2 and HK-47; even if there are other droids like BD-1, BB-8, C-3P0, AP-5 and B2-EMO that are memorable in their own way. Even that mad one in Solo was kind of awesome too; but Chop, R2 and HK are absolute top tier.
