This story takes a lot of inspiration from the classic pulp adventure novel The Prisoner of Zenda, which if anyone hasn't read it is a ton of fun and has a lot of good film adaptations. Well worth checking out.

"Do you mind not standing on my chest, my hat's on fire.", The Doctor, "The Androids of Tara" Doctor Who stories can portray a number of different genres, but a medieval action fantasy story is rare. This is so much better than "Robot of Sherwood" (and I'm not a hater of that story). This one, however, is just much more fun. This story motivated me to watch "The Prisoner of Zenda" film - the 1937 black-and-white one, I think, just to see how much of the original was incorporated into this Classic Who story. And then, that film motivated me to read the book (well, have the audiobook read to me). This story's inspiration is obvious, lots of charaters match - but there were fewer androids in the original. Cyril Shaps plays the Archimandrite - a frequent Who actor. We first saw him in "The Tomb of the Cybermen" with the archaeology group. He was also in "The Ambassadors of Death" as the scientist who eventually helped Liz escape and then in "Planet of the Spiders" as the clairvoyant. But this is the only story where Shaps's character doesn't die. Leeds Castle is impressive - it is nowhere near city of Leeds up north. I remember going through the maze (not featured in this story). I'm still astonished that I made the decision to go in knowing there was only a limited amount of time to do it and get out. My mind goes to the famous scene of the Hampton Court Maze from "Three Men in a Boat". Peter Jeffrey is great as Grendel. Jeffrey popped up everywhere in the 60s through to the 90s. I remember him as a one-off character in an episode of "Porridge" and the detective inspector in the "Dr. Phibes" horror films. BTW He was also The Pilot in "The Macra Terror" - I really need to watch that again. See you next week!
