One oddity about the comic is that while it's technically set in the DC Universe, Gaiman was always very uncomfortable about making extensive use of that setting, and typically avoided it except for these opening issues where the editors forced it on him. But with full creative control over the show, he was able to take out things like Dream getting help from Martian Manhunter to recover his belongings, or the asylum John is in being Arkham, complete with a cameo by the Scarecrow. However, one that he decided to keep was this rendition of Cain and Abel, who were actually the hosts of a horror anthology comic, with the same gimmick seen here of Cain eventually getting fed up with the dimwitted Abel and killing him, only for him to always be back next issue, explained here as them simply being creations of the Dreamworld who keep inevitably going through that cycle even as they're fully aware of it.

Yeah, not the best episode for you, avoidance of triggers-wise. Start by talking about the snake. I freaked out some too. No, the snake was not fucking necessary. Especially not that scene of the one Fate swallowing it, leading me to say, “NNNNNNOPE” The prevalence of snakes in shows you watch is not appreciated on my end either, one, because it is always unpleasant for you, Jess, and two, it’s gotten worse since your phobia has rubbed off on me. Like you said, “Snakes. Why’d it have to be snakes.” If it helps, since gaining your phobia, I often try to distract myself when snakes appear by doing a John Rhys-Davies impression, by saying, “Asps! Very dangerous! You go first!” Fingers crossed the rest of this show is sans snakes. A delight to see Joely Richardson as Ethel. She surely did not give a fuck, and I loved how much you loved it. I goddamn flipped my lid seeing her son, yelling, “Holy shit!!! David Thewlis is in this!?!?!?!” Now I am most anticipating David killing it in this show, preferably with the same energy he brought to the venal, vile, villainous V. M. Varga, the BEST character on the show Fargo. I shared your criticism of Morpheus for not abiding by the one question thing. I commented, “Which part of “one question, one rule” is giving you trouble?” and at the end of the scene, I chimed in with, “Mister Sandman, this is not ‘Nam, this is oracular mysticism, there are rules.” I share your thoughts of though it makes sense that Morpheus does not want another bird after what happened to the last one, Lucienne wanting him to have one for her own piece of mind whilst he is off “searching for his stuff and thangs, as Rick Grimes would say”, as you put it. isn’t the least reasonable request in the world. Interesting plotline of Cain and Abel. Cain, of course, is the more confrontational of the two. And to the surprise of no one who went to Sunday school, or just anyone who happens to have passing knowledge of the story in question, Abel is killed by Cain. An interesting twist they’re forced in an endless cycle of fratricide. It did mildly pull me out of it as I thought it was with the left hand that old brother Cain struck the blow that laid his brother low. Unless, of course, he changes it up every time to stave off the tedium of the repetition. Brings us to Gregory and the Gargoyle plot point. First, I laughed at Cain saying that you can’t name a Gargoyle Irving. Why not? Hagrid named a dragon Norbert, did he not? And when Cain said a Gargoyle’s name can only begin with the letter G, I said, “Well, what about Victor, Hugo, and Laverne?” I admit that the scene with Gregory did not get to me that bad, sad though it was. Your reaction, however, THAT got to me, bad. Then, Jess, to hear you speak about you and Rocco and your childhood dog, it tore into my heart something fierce. Made me think of my boyhood cat; the last pet thus far that I’ve had as a matter of fact. That’ll be twenty years come winter since her death. Despite the less than pleasant aspects of the episode for you, this was a lovely, lovely reaction, Jess, and I would very much love to continue to share this show with you.

The Arkham bit wouldn’t have been too bad, though maybe not with Scarecrow as that would have been too distracting.

I knew you'd be super into David Thewlis given what you've said about Varga. Though to me he'll always be King Einon from Dragonheart, a movie that I can't really call good, but it's a slimy evil David Thewlis fighting Sean Connery as a fucking dragon, so how can you say no to that? In the comic, this character is the second-tier supervillain Dr. Destiny, and if you're familiar with the old Justice League cartoon, he showed up in one episode voiced by Jeffrey Combs, also an awesomely creepy choice. Part of the show's general extricating itself from the DC Universe involved making him just a regular guy with no comic connection, and I think the result is actually a lot deeper than what we got before. His entire scene in this episode was invented for the show and would be totally out of character for the comic version.

I believe I do recall something about that character from Justice League. Not intimately familiar with him, so I probably won’t be too heartbroken if there’s divergence from the source material, and like you said, Neil Gaiman’s overseeing and approving changes to this show, so even if stuff gets changed, it shouldn’t be too bad. I’m just now pumped to see David kill it in this show. I’m really excited about that.

I know what you mean about not wanting fur babies to have their last moments without family. I've always stayed in the room when I've had to have cats put to sleep, because vets say that when family leaves the room, the pet does nothing but look for them until they die. Which is horrible. I'm enjoying these reactions, so thank you for them!

Thomas Corp

That’s one big regret that I have. When the time came, nearly twenty years ago now, my cat died quietly in the middle of the night. And because I was asleep, I wasn’t there with her at the end. God bless you and Jess for the love and care you guys have for the fur babies. Warms my cold heart something fierce.
