"You've shot the wrong man.", "Not quite. You shot the wrong man's hat, though.", Thawn and the Doctor, "The Power of Kroll" No K9 in these first episodes - it really was far too wet! But what we do have is John Leeson, the voice of K9, playing Dugeen the console operator. It's really nice to let him have an onscreen role - and it really was far too wet for the K9 prop. We have another appearance of Philip Madoc who plays Fenner. He had played the major roles of Solon in "The Brain of Morbius" and the War Lord in "The War Games". And he was in "The Krotons" as well. Actually, Madoc thought he was to be cast as the major role of Thawn, the refinery controller, but Neil McCarthy had already accepted the part so Madoc agreed to play Fenner. But if I didn't mention John Abineri who plays native leader, Toby Hadoke might hit me with something hard. Abineri is one of Toby's favorite Classic Who actors and this is his last role in Classic Who ("Fury from the Deep" - he is attacked by seaweed, "The Ambassadors of Death" - General Carrington is led away in disgrace, Death to the Daleks - he dies really early.) Toby Hadoke was the DVD commentary host on many of the Classic Who releases and he does tend to mention Abineri a lot. I love that man-in-a-costume Kroll fake-out! This is another Robert Holmes story - but not a big favorite of mine. He had written the marvelous "The Ribos Operation" earlier in this season and the quirky "The Sun Makers", the atmospheric (if mis-cast) "The Talons of Weng-Chiang" and he was the Classic Who script editor for the early 4th Doctor seasons. How many female characters did you notice? Yep - only Romana - a bit "The Lord of the Rings"-like. Mary Tamm said that this was her worst location experience - getting stuck in the mud and miles from anywhere. The green skin makeup was specially imported and because it needed to be resistant to water. Unfortunately, this meant ... it was resistant to water. The special makeup solvent had not been ordered and the green makeup was very difficult to remove. There were lots of extras had a green skin tinge for weeks afterwards. "The Great One condemns the prisoners to die by the seventh holy ritual of the old book.", "Seven's my lucky number!", Ranquin and the Doctor, "The Power of Kroll"
