Ryan

It was a notorious miscalculation to throw this episode at us as just the first regular episode after the pilot movie. Unlike the original show's episode that it's a sequel to, where we'd already had several episodes to get to know and be attached to the characters, here we've just barely met these people, so we pretty much just have to take the show's word for it that anything they're doing is out of character, so how is that supposed to be any fun? It's pretty obvious that the real motivation behind this script was to give us a direct connection to the first show to help win over any old fans that Encounter at Farpoint hadn't yet convinced to stick with the new show, and it unfortunately backfired spectacularly, remaining best known for Data's claim to be "fully functional" which poor Brent Spiner has never lived down in all the decades since, however much better the character got. And of course this also contributed hugely to Wesley's reputation as an insufferable brat, despite all efforts to assure us he's not usually like this, which the rest of the season didn't exactly do the best job assuring us of.

Addressing how you how you will have an update mid-season to see how many of us are on board with the journey through Next Gen, I can answer that now: oh, I am definitely on board for this journey, Jess. Now to the episode. This episode is one that is not terribly well-revered. The main bones of contention are one, it’s a blatant rehash of the one episode from the original series, which to the show’s defense, there was a writer’s strike, hence, the recycled plot. And two, as I see Ryan succinctly detailed, it’s difficult to appreciate a situation where characters act out of character when we’re only on the second episode, thus we’re still getting to know the characters. Your discomfort in the episode, especially during the Tasha/Data scene was shared by me. I know how you feel about the thing of people having sexual encounters whilst under the influence. Yeah, rewatching the episode, I just had a grimace on my face during that whole scene. I was curious about your thoughts on Tasha’s, uh, look. Your reaction to the Tasha/Data scene, saying, “Well, I’m sure there was a lot of fanfiction written about that.” I said, “Probably, yeah.” It is interesting how you said Data fucking Tasha was not something you remembered when it is, again, I see Ryan has said so as well, one of the more, let’s say infamous aspects of the first season. The thing is, I’m not opposed to the pairing of Tasha and Data. I do, however, take exception to what happened whilst consent was HIGHLY dubious, and worse, how it’s presented as humorous, when it’s NOT. I share your liking how Picard and Beverly resisted. That was a relief to me as well. Riker, I agree, held together well. As someone who wasn’t even alive when this episode first aired, I suspect, I see Ryan’s comments indicate that I’m not incorrect in thinking this, that this episode is largely responsible for Wesley becoming the Jar Jar Binks of Star Trek. The thing is, because the hate for Wesley got built up as it did, when I finally met Wesley, so to speak, I didn’t mind him that much. He is last in my ranking of the Next Gen main crew, sure, but the character himself is not the worst or most annoying character that I’ve ever seen. It does help that Wil Wheaton does share fan sentiment of being annoyed with the sometimes-sub-par writing he got stuck with. In this episode, sure, Wes doth cause a mess, even so, I’m saying, “Ok, well, you can’t blame him for that; this isn’t strictly speaking his fault.” I did make a crack this time round, when Wesley’s shenanigans happen, I said, “Wesley, I hate to have to tell you this, but I think that search for Ray Brower’s body did a number of things to your sanity.” Despite not being the biggest fan of this episode, your reaction was most enjoyable, Jess. Thank you.

If ever there were a storyline definition of 'guilty pleasure', it's this one! I actually really enjoyed it on first viewing, as (in the UK) it came bundled on the same VHS tape as Farpoint. It may be crass and of dubious sentiments at times, but much of it is a good laugh - and made me interested in seeing what the rest of Season 1 was like; so, for that reason alone, it did its job. The original draft of the script was a lot more serious, and was written by The Naked Time's writer John D F Black. After Gene Roddenberry 'edited' it by adding all the sexual stuff, he requested a pseudonym to be used. (BTW, Roddenberry edited much of the first season. Bear that in mind!) In the late 90's Denise Crosby (Tasha Tar) wrote, produced and presented a movie documentary called 'Trekkies'. In one hilarious scene, she interviews Brent Spiner (Data), who shows her a painting that fan sent him....which vividly portrayed his demonstration to Tasha of being fully functional. Denise Crosby had hysterics :)

For what it is worth this episode synched perfectly (on Apple) so I am hopeful it was just the pilot episode that had problems. Also, in regard to the episode I agree with the comments that this episode was poorly placed since we do not know the characters yet. I still like this episode though. I started watching this show live in season three when I was a teenager (I did not know about it before then) so I did not see this episode until after I had seen future episodes and did know the characters better.

I feel the same way about those scenes. It's the thing I didn't like about, The Almighty Johnsons. I like how the door closed and they didn't feel the need to show anything. It's such a good show

Don't need a temperature check from me. I hope you react to all 7 seasons and then the TNG movies. Even if there are certain episodes that you remember, rewatches are always fun when you haven't seen the show in years. Love to see you do a rewatch of series 1 of Doctor Who at some point. Seeing you react to the 9th Doctor's run again now that you have context for the show would be interesting. Although I doubt your opinions of Rose will have changed much. 😂

I hope you continue to react to the Star Trek universe, even though it will take years. Rewatching with you is fantastic.

I had forgotten (or mentally blocked out) the bit about Lieutenant Commander Sex Toy....
