I’m surprised to see and hear you say that you enjoyed this episode as much as you did. The reason I say that is that this episode is widely regarded as one of the worst of Next Gen, even all of Star Trek, depending on who you ask. The bulk of the criticism is directed towards the casting/design of the aliens/alien world being what it was. As Brent Spiner described “There is that one episode that we all knew was bad very early on. The one where Denise was captured by the tribe of space Africans. It was just a racist episode. Maybe not intentionally, but it felt that way and looked that way.” It’s not one I was ever particularly fond of, though in revisiting it, I found that it wasn’t as bad as I remembered. Now seeing your reaction, I find my opinion toward the episode softening and leaning to what you expressed. HIGHLY questionable and uncomfortable presentation notwithstanding, I find myself in agreement with you, in that this episode is, as you say, a good analysis of the Prime Directive, and how the crew gets around it in a troublesome situation like this. And as you described, there’s the great narrative of the show being that a woman’s worth isn’t just to be a wife. Especially coming off the heels of the original series, such a narrative is rather refreshing, I concur. I do love the strong Tasha focus. Tasha does take her job VERY seriously, one big reason why I love her. She is a strong, bad bitch as you put it, and it’s great to see Denise Crosby having the spotlight. I too like how you liked how the episode makes the distinction between being attracted to someone and wanting to spend the rest of your life with someone, and how it’s two separate things. I do love how the situation is ultimately resolved, your reaction to that being most superb. I find through your reaction I really have no beef with the plot of the episode, the presentation, on the other hand, is the only major problem. It’s like how I’ve heard Wil Wheaton said upon revisiting the episode that he felt that it wasn’t good, but it was “not as overtly racist as I recalled...and if the Ligonians hadn't been arbitrarily determined to be entirely African American, it wouldn't have even been an issue.” I’m told that one of the writers, Maurice Hurley, similarly expressed such a sentiment, that it was “a good idea, but the execution just fell apart. Again, if you take that script and if the actors had been told to give it a different twist, that show would have been different. But it became too baroque and fell apart.” Of course, I get completely if people say they can’t get past the presentation and assess the episode on the merits of plot and story. One such person was Garrett Wang of Voyager fame. He said that he missed the pilot and the previous episode first-run, and this one was the first one he saw. And he was so appalled that he decided not to watch any further, though he did ultimately see the full series around when Voyager started. There’s also that scene where, as you say, though you know Picard is acting in a chicanerous manner in the one scene, we are still left with a scene of two men discussing a woman’s worth, and yeah, I share the displeasure over such scenes. Other highlights of the reaction were when you commented how salty you would have been in Picard’s shoes; I too would have been quite a salty wiseass about the situation. Then there was your comment on Wesley’s sweater. Maybe he’s got more than one? I loved and appreciated your thoughts on Deanna. Then there’s my favorite moment of the reaction, which was a reaction to one of my favorite scenes of the episode, which was the scene Picard and Beverly had. I loved the moment between Picard and Beverly, especially that lovely compliment that Picard paid Beverly. And I adored your own reaction to that moment, and wholeheartedly second your statement, “Oh my God. They are SO fucking adorable it’s not even funny.” That they are, Jess, that they are. So, like I said, though this is FAR from being a popular episode, I am genuinely happy you quite enjoyed it. Yeah, your opinion on that might not be that popular. But if you genuinely enjoyed the episode as you did, then I am genuinely very happy to hear that, Jess. Thank you for the delightful reaction, Jess.

When I saw which episode I thought, "Ah."

The original director on this one was so outrageously racist that he was quickly fired, and at the short notice they could only replace him with the first assistant director, who'd never done the main job before, and the climactic fight scene especially suffers for it. And one thing they couldn't undo is that despite the script not specifying anything about the Ligonians' appearance, that director had insisted on casting them all as "Darkest Africa" stereotypes, which the entire cast hated and they've all made sizable moves to distance themselves from it ever since. Not that it was that great a script in the first place, with a resolution full of logic holes, and I especially love the opening scene where either Picard is only getting briefed on the details of this important mission literally minutes before it starts, or everyone's telling each other things they all know already because the writer couldn't figure out any other way to get the exposition across. And you have to feel for poor Levar Burton trying his darndest to sell Data's "slip of the tongue" as the funniest thing that's ever happened in history, which is the kind of thing you really need to get used to in how Data's written in these first couple seasons to avoid going mad.

This episode isn't ALL bad. For a start, it's a strong story for Tasha; and allows her character to develop, with Denise Crosby making the most of the opportunity. We get another entertaining glimpse of the possibilities of the Holodeck; and I also rather enjoy the whole 'fight to the death' final Act. Unfortunately the tone of the episode is, if arguably not racist, at the very least deeply patronising; and, for me, it also lacks a sense of momentum for much of its running time.

There are a couple of episodes in this season that are really cringe for me and this is one of them. I didn't watch this with you, so looking at the comments, I see some say it has racist. I don't remember that aspect. It's the sexual overtones for me that are uncomfortable and the whole episode is written around them. I'm a Game of Thrones fan, but I just never needed the sex scenes, source material or not. I guess in my old age, I am becoming a prude, lol
