Saltire le Hutt

3x17 : At the start of this episode, we are viewing things from the first person, as we inhabit Kallus himself. Dave Filoni originally wanted to make this episode entirely from that first person perspective, but budgets were always tight on this show (unlike now!) so that idea was scrapped. Poor Lt. Lyste! He's had his pants pulled down multiple times in this series, even in the opening episode, when our crew stole those crates from under him; then he gets scolded into submission from Leia, when he didn't do a lot wrong that episode, and now is the sacrificial pawn in a game of wits between Kallus and Thrawn. I really hope they don't send that Doctor in who was working with Dedra in Andor to interrogate him - he doesn't deserve that fate, especially when Thrawn knows he is innocent! Kallus is playing such a dangerous game here staying when he was given the chance to flee; he's a braver man than I. I would have been on board that escape ship faster than Chopper! Thrawn showing his physical prowess as well as his mental aptitude here, going toe-to-toe with Dark Troopers, which we saw in Mando. Chopper Base is safe for now, but our friends cannot make one slip or Thrawn will pounce. Yularen is more like his Clone Wars version than the one we saw heading up the search for Cassian in Andor. Shame he didn't defect and stayed with Ahsoka, rather than join up with the Empire; he would have been a great rebel leader. Its somehow strange to see Ezra in an imperial officer's uniform. We've seen him in countless trooper outfits, but an officer's one, is a bit strange to see, though he does look pretty good in it. I do kind of like their wee caps, I have to admit! Kanan calling Rex 'gramps', technically he is older than Rex (by a year), so I always find that line funny! If you notice at the back of Thrawn's office behind his chair (and in the final shot with Thrawn), there is what looks like two creatures, which on first glance seems strange. However, this is a heavy nod to the original novels of Thrawn. In them (I believe as I heard this on another reactors channel), there was a world where animals used the force to hunt. And some animals evolved to cancel out the force so they wouldn't be hunted. Thrawn keeps these creatures close to him in those books, so that a force-user, like a Jedi, can't use the force on him, so he always has the upper hand.

3x18 : There is a good tie-in now with this episode and Andor. Here is the straw that breaks the camels back for Mon Mothma (its the same actress doing VA here as who played her in Ep3, Rogue One and Andor) - the Ghorman Massacre. And she has been referencing the Ghormans to her family and the senate in Andor, as the events leading up to that massacre are becoming set in place. Firstly we heard that the Empire is cutting off their shipping lanes, which will lead to starvation. Over the next two years, they tighten their grip on the planet so that it becomes destitute. Then at things ramp up, the peaceful protests by the Ghorman's are ended brutally. I'm thinking in season 2 of Andor, its a possibility, to show Mon Mothma that enough is enough in the series, and she has to double-down on the Rebellion. That would then tie in with her statement here at the start in Rebels. Gold Leader, Captain Vander was in the original film A New Hope, and Rogue One above Scarif. He goes on the trench run with Luke and Wedge, but gets shot down by Vader at the end. He has one sexy astromech in Rogue One though, its an R2 but its silver plated, and throws some shade on our beloved R2-D2 and his white and blue paint job. Still its about substance, not style with R2-D2, as we all know, since he is the true hero of the saga! :D We finally see the TIE Defender in all its deadly glory. Hyperdrive and shields, first for a TIE fighter (though Vader has them on his own TIE Advanced), as agile and speedy as an A-Wing and it has 6 guns, missiles and torpedoes! Its a beast, and is as serious a threat to the Rebels and the galaxy if it goes into production, as something else the Empire is working on right now. There it is then, in the final shots. The birth of The Alliance To Restore The Republic, better known as the Rebel Alliance is finally upon us! It is a great moment, and with the addition of the music, just makes one teary-eyed, as we are finally here. And Mon Mothma's pleas to the galaxy to rise up, is messaged across the galaxy, from Chopper of all things on The Ghost! Its not ridiculous at all that you got emotional Jess, I've seen Rebels dozens of times now, and as it comes together it always gets me too. Rebels is sooo good. :D Thats two-up Chopper is on R2 now in the Rebellion; firstly having the name of a base in his honour, then televising Mon Mothma's rallying cry to the galaxy! I bet he rubs it in to R2 as well the next time he sees him! :P

Like you said, Jess, a Kallus episode followed by a Mon Mothma episode, excitement INDEED! Start by talking about the Kallus episode. The opening was striking the first time I saw it; the feeling persists. It is wonderful seeing Kallus continue to get the spotlight, especially seeing how his being the stoolie has reached a point that Yularen is brought in to assist Thrawn in identifying the stoolie. Now, this episode provides something new with Thrawn. Or at least, something that never really got explored in the expanded universe of old. In the old continuity, Thrawn was always a mastermind and an intellectual threat. No word was ever given about his physical prowess, combat-wise. Though one could reasonably surmise that Thrawn could handle himself well in a fight, the subject never came up as I recall. Here, the spotlight is shown that Thrawn can throw down with the best of them. Which, given Timothy Zahn served in an advisory role for the writing of Thrawn, I presume he approved of Filoni’s showcasing of that. I love your nervousness about Thrawn, and how you wanted him to chill, I quipped, “Jess, Thrawn is chill; he’s fucking Zen.” As you observed, the writing comes through with Kallus. I loved the scene of Pryce battling Rex, and she held her own, credit where credit is due. It is difficult to say whether it would have been better if Kallus had left with the group. It feels like a Morton’s Fork type situation. Worse still is I believe Thrawn knew, or at least heavily suspected Kallus was the stoolie as far back as that last episode, he just lacked tangible, concrete evidence to present that couldn’t be read as circumstantial. Now he has the proof, and you are so worried for Kallus, and all of it is glorious. Now onto the Mon Mothma episode. The Ghorman Massacre was from the expanded universe of old and could conceivably be shown in the second and final season of Andor, I’m down for that if it is. As is described here, it was a brutal act ordered by the Emperor and carried out, again in the expanded universe of old at least, by our dear Wilhuff. Hmm-hmm, what a naughty boy, old Wil is. This becomes the final straw for Mon, hence her actions before and during this episode. Lovely to hear Genevieve O’Reilly provide Mon’s voice in this. Likewise, lovely to see Gold Squadron, especially Gold Leader, which led me to say, “Good to see you, Dutch.” I like the small arc of Gold Two being averse to our Shady Bunch, then how she comes around to them. Also, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn was pulling double duty this episode as the voice of Pryce and Gold Two. Yes, most lovely the Mon and Chopper team-up, and you KNOW that Hera discreetly sent a STERN command to Chopper that read, “I need you to PLEASE NOT kill and/or harm this lady!” And Chopper would recognize the severity of the situation, and say, “Yes, Mom. No problem.” The ending speech that Mon had made me emotional when I saw it, and I was so happy that they got Genevieve to return to the role, as she was beautiful in that scene. You have nothing to be sorry about, Jess, as that scene is wondrous to behold. I am curious about Mon’s husband. I assume he was left behind to take some blame and will be visited by dear Palpy who will... take care of him. Assuming of course, such an occurrence hasn’t already happened with Mon’s husband being a fall-guy to cover for Mon which would then cost him his life. Either way, it’s a scene my brother and I are praying for in the second and final season of Andor, preferably with the Emperor involved. Thank you, so very much, Jess for the beautiful reaction.

I had heard about that with the point-of-view set-up. Kind of wish they could have done that. Yeah, most unfortunate about Lyste. Seeing Thrawn fight was startiling and wonderful. I still have a gap or two about Yularen and would love to know about his decision to remain with the Empire. I do love the Imperial uniforms as they are sharp. Been a while with the Thrawn books, but the connection you mentioned does ring a bell.

You and me both on the thinking that the Ghorman Massacre will be included in Andor season two. Good to see you caught about Dutch. He does have a good-looking droid. Yeah, it was terrific seeing the TIE Defender in action. That ending surely does form a lump in your throat and tears pool in your eyes. I keep telling my brother he needs to watch the animated shows. He hasn’t gotten to it yet, last I heard. They are so good though. I would imagine that when Chopper fills R2 in on his actions that Chopper would savor the moment of rubbing it in.

Though I don't know the Thrawn of the original books, it would only make sense that he would also be proficient in the martial arts too. Since I always associate him with an imperial Sherlock Holmes, that works fine for me as Holmes was also an excellent swordsman and boxer in the books as well as having a titanic intellect. I do like how Jess has an almost nervous automatic jolt anytime Thrawn is now on screen, the writers have done their job then as Jess is indeed finding out about the power behind his name, that we heard almost mystically spoke of in Mando. I do like how Kallus is getting his chance to shine working for the good guys now. In the earlier seasons he was always competent at his job, its just he always came undone by such a talented and legendary crew such as the Spectres here. Instead of laughing at him coming off second best every episode, now we root for him as he tries to stay out of Thrawn's grasp. Oh yes, Tarkin is such a loveable fellow isn't he, bringing a Star Destroyer down on a protest (in the old stories anyway, I don't know if they'll develop that for Andor). The very definition of the Empire crushing free speech, hope and freedom. Yet thats what helps bring on the tears at the end of this episode, as Mon Mothma brings out a call of hope, that by banding together, they will be able to stop this evil once and for all (well until the sequels anyway!). I will be curious to see what they do with Mon and Luthen's story in Andor season 2, to see what further paths they go on to try and get this rebellion here started.
