It's pretty obvious that this season's plotline was altered halfway through after the fans didn't like the first half (and who can blame them?), and you can especially feel the writers having to rush through certain developments before the finale next episode in how easily Metatron is able to convince Castiel to compromise his morals for the sake of making Heaven better, after everything that happened last time. Sam and Dean going straight to resurrecting Abaddon rather than using some lower demon, and making their grandfather's sacrifice completely pointless by inexplicably both leaving the room just so one of them can take a phone call, also reeks of "This needs to happen to set pieces in place for the finale, so just go with it, please."
