Hi. Just to let you know the download link goes to the file for 3x21-3x22.

Start by addressing your thanks to us for our kindness in supporting your decision to hold off on reacting to Ahsoka. You say it has meant that much to you, then you are most welcome, Jess, for the kindness that we have provided. Now to the season premiere. A solid season opener. Yes, Kanan and Ezra’s relationship progressing the way it has is lovely. It is great how we focus on Sabine’s story continuing from last season. I love the rescue of her father, especially the sequence where they discover, “Your father, they have him, in the belly of that steel beast!” Shame they couldn’t recycle the John Williams piece for that sequence, because Lord almighty, did John deliver for that movie, that sequence especially. As you see, we get more of Bo-Katan. Again, the final season of Clone Wars was not shown yet, thus this is the first time seeing her since helping Obi-Wan. I believe Katee Sackhoff was told about the events that transpired so as to inform her performance in Rebels, much like how Sam Witwer and Ashley Eckstein were told when they joined the Rebels cast. Yes, it is most striking seeing the weapon Sabine created be used, and how she is consumed with guilt because of that. Her body language reads in that moment screams, “Now I am become death, the destroyer of Mandalore.” It got me seeing how it got you in that moment. I also loved your reaction to the father and daughter reunion. Tiber was a mite too full of himself. You backtracked and said maybe, and I said that considering he gives the impression that he thinks he can go toe-to-toe with the fucking Emperor, I’d say that’s a certainty. In any event, he is far too proud of this technological terror that Sabine has constructed. After all, the ability to target and destroy specific armor is insignificant next to the full POWER of the Dark Side. I love how Thrawn calls the guy out on both his hubris, and his failure to properly appreciate the full artistic irony of the weapon. I love how you clocked Sabine sabotaging the weapon. Now you’ve seen how Bo-Katan acquires the Darksaber. You say you expected that there would be a fight. Yeah, the fact that there wasn’t led to LOTS of fans calling bullshit on her refusing Mando trying to just give her the blade. I reserved judgment thinking that I assumed Filoni would address the discrepancy, which it ultimately was. Rewatching this again, I think, “Careful, Bo, that blade has a curse on it.” And not the curse discussed by the Armorer. I have a thought that because the Emperor is the rightful claimant, his power bled into it some, and resulted in a curse for anyone who has tried to wield it hence. Similarly, when Bo states she would not bow to the Empire, given the Emperor is the rightful claimant to the blade, he does technically rule Mandalore to begin with, she IS technically the traitor in this regard. The writers even acknowledged that when she refused to bow to Darth Maul. It is, of course, irrelevant in the grand scheme as we see in The Mandalorian Bo reclaims the planet and unites her people. And now, you are at the point that many of us were at concerning Bo. Her first appearance in The Mandalorian was the first time seeing her since her appearance in Rebels. Therefore, to my knowledge anyway, you now currently have the full backstory for Bo-Katan. A most marvelous reaction to the beginning of the end of Rebels. It was so lovely, Jess, thank you.

I first watched the first episode on YouTube out of context, and I went a whole few years not realizing there was a part 2 where it's immediately revealed her brother and mother hadn't died. After not getting the full story for that part of Rebels for that long it was quite a reveal when I eventually watched the whole series through, lol.

Timeline update, we are now into the final year before A New Hope. A lot of explanation of why Mandalore is a dustball, and even Hera says the planet is probably lost - we know it only gets worse too now! Kanan is AWESOME at the start of this episode, jumping around taking out flying bikes, troop carriers and stormtroopers, as if they weren't there. He'd give Anakin a run for his money here, showing his progression as a Jedi warrior these past 4 years now, as you note Jess - AND he's blind!! Love him getting a bit smoochie with Hera, and Chopper exclaiming "Grrr, get a room already!!" :D A small thing, but I love that Kanan pats Chopper after they reassess their plan to free Sabine's father. Chopper has shown sadness for when Kanan got captured, but we've never seen Kanan be affectionate to Chop. Kanan and Hera (and by association Chopper) have known each other for years now, before they became the Spectres when Zeb joined; and that little pat tells me though Chopper gets on Kanan's nerves at times, he does care for that little maniac - he is one of the family, like any good pet is. Ezra is on the goofy juice these episodes, flying around like a lunatic as he tries unsuccessfully to acquit himself with the jetpack. First time we officially heard the term 'beskar' for Mandalorian armour here. Its a term coined from comics years back, and they made that term official here, after it hitherto being known by other names back in the EU days (durasteel for example). With what we see in Mando though, Din's armour really seems to make him impervious to blaster - and lightsabre - attack. With how easily some Mandalorians here in the animations get taken out with lightsabres and blasters, in my head-canon I would say these armour sets aren't 100% beskar. Din Djarin does also make the point in the episode when Fennec Shand shoots him at long range, that his beskar held up. Perhaps at shorter distances with a powerful rifle or blaster, it wouldn't? I love Bo-Katan, she's always been my favourite Mandalorian. As Thomas has noted that when this aired the Siege Of Mandalore hadn't been aired, and the last time we saw her was the episode Satine was killed. Her eyes are a bit strange here in the design though, with them being straight-up green. In TCW, they are more yellow-green, which matches Katee Sackhoff better as her eyes are more chestnut in colour. This isn't the first time in animation major characters look different between their animated designs, and live interpretation. For example, Saw Gerrera has blue eyes, then green, before going with brown as Forest Whitaker got given the role. And Filoni wasn't bothered with Ahsoka not having blue eyes when she was appearing in Mando, and it was in fact Rosario Dawson who suggested to try the blue contacts. Its no biggie, but for Bo, its really noticeable in these eps! Anyway, when Bo is introduced to Sabine I'm surprised the latter doesn't recognise her, even if Sabine was an imperial for years. Bo and Sabine's mother Ursa Wren fought at The Siege Of Mandalore as her second, so they obviously had history. Now tbf, Sabine would have been an infant at the Siege, but you'd expect Ursa had other dealings with Bo down the years, even once her clan sided with the Empire. I love how Sabine's father, Alrich, realises its her coming to rescue him, by the paint on the windshield! Also the timing throughout the sequence when they reunite. There are several pauses and it looks quite distant, but when he hugs and tells her, she is his daughter, its all the more beautiful. Ezra going off that cliff and trying to be Mace Windu on Ryloth, and getting it completely wrong! As a warrior, he's getting there, but he's not on the level of his great grand master yet (in the force anyway as he is 10 times the Jedi when it comes to compassion)! :D Finally we hear about the weapon that Sabine built that she has referenced, decimate fighters from her own clan. The guilt from all of this would be overwhelming.

4x2 : Always been in two minds story-wise about Tristan and Ursa surviving the attack from Sabine's 'Duchess'. On the one hand, killing them off would add drama to the power of this thing and give extra incentive for Sabine to bring down the Empire some day. On the other hand, a main theme of Rebels is family, and having one of our Spectre family, who we've been following, have some of her own blood family be killed off due to her actions, goes against that theme; so I can see pro's and con's to the decision they took to keep them alive. Another thing I'm iffy with, is when the Empire comes back for them, Sabine goes into bloodlust mode, but she doesn't kill them, merely disables them. This is one time I wish Rebels was a tad more like Clone Wars, as they wouldn't have hesitated showing that; but with this airing on Disney XD at the time, that was maybe seen as a bit dark for that channel. Sabine is great, but her originally calling that horrific weapon, "The Duchess" is dreadful. Satine would have abhorred any weapon like that, and even Bo is disgusted by it. Thrawn sees its 'artistry', but also regards it as a cowardly weapon. At least Sabine sees the hubris of her earlier self in designing and naming such a weapon, after a pacifist, like this. I love the links to the series, Rome, in Rebels. Kevin McKidd plays Fenn Rau, Ray Stevenson who was McKidd's friend in the series, played Gar Saxon, and here Tobias Menzies is Saxon's brother and he played Brutus in the series. Jess will see Ray Stevenson again in Star Wars soon, and he is amazing! Even when Sabine reverses the effect of the weapon, to use on imperials, its a horrifying sight. Bo-Katan is right, if they themselves use it to fight the Empire, they are no better than them. In fact, the lightning effect the weapon uses as it tortures and destroys all in its sight, is very reminiscent of Sidious's own force lightning (particularly the scene in Rise Of Skywalker when he uses his lightning to bring down ships), which signifies this. Its a beautiful, but bittersweet, final scene where Sabine hands over the Darksabre to Bo-Katan, and the clans swear fielty. She herself mentions the Empire will bring everything they have got 'to crush Mandalore', and we know thats what will happen since it has now been fleshed out in Mandalorian and Book of Boba. You can now see how Bo-Katan wasn't keen to accept the Darksabre again from Din in Mando like this. I think she figured that she was unworthy because she lost it, and to reclaim it, she thought she needed to win it in battle; however as we then saw, it was her actions throughout all these years, fighting back against the Empire time and time again, which showed the clans that she was truly the one worthy enough to claim tha blade. After the events of constantly getting up the Empire's nose, this was the final straw and with Bo re-uniting the clans once more against the Empire, they must have sent in Moff Gideon to turn the place to glass as Boba Fett put it. Which is a sober reminder of the things to come for all of them soon, especially as the Empire will have to deal with the growing threat now of the Rebel Alliance.

Kanan is most impressive in this two-parter. Nice little moment between Hera and Kanan, and yes, a nice little moment of Kanan patting Chopper. Durasteel was used in KOTOR as I recall. You’re probably right on the Beskar here being impure. And as shown when Fennec shot Mando, there is power of a weapon and distance to consider. Yeah, it has been interesting the difference in animation between Clone Wars and Rebels. My eyes are hazel and can look more brown or green depending on the light or what color clothing I’m wearing, so I’m not too bothered by the look for Bo here, noticeable though the difference is. That is a good moment Sabine’s dad recognizes his daughter via the art, and their reunion is lovely. Yeah, if Ezra’s wanting to be the bad motherfucker that Mace is, he’s got some ways to go on that.

I could make a case either way for the survival of Ursa and Tristan. Ultimately, I’m fine with the decision made. It’s a bit of a shame that Disney XD likely is the reason why Sabine doesn’t go further off the deep end, I agree. It is definitely a slap in the face hearing the weapon named after Satine, though like you say, Sabine concedes her hubris. Ray Stevenson has been amazing in his Star Wars work. It makes me sorrier about his untimely death. Your thought of Bo felt unworthy of the blade and needed to win it back in the proper fashion, hence her rejecting Mando’s efforts to give it to her, that was along the lines of my assessment as well when fans griped about the discrepancy. And like I said, knowing Filoni and how attentive he is to the continuity, I figured he had his reasons. And it’s all worked out in the end. The events of the episode likely did prove the straw breaking the camel’s back, leading the Emperor, or perhaps Tarkin, or whoever gave the order to Moff Gideon to launch his attack on Mandalore, turning the planet to glass.

Jess has definitely made the right call to put Ahsoka on the back burner for now, as though it can be followed fine on its own, it more than any other live tv show so far, has so many links to the animations, that she will get more out of it once she has finished here with Rebels. She will be fine to watch the new shows airing after this as she'll be pretty much caught up with the exception of Bad Batch, though so far there hasn't been many too links to that series and the live stuff; so Ahsoka should be the last time she'll have to postpone something airing in the present. It also looks like she has filmed well ahead too to avoid most spoilers for this and for Ahsoka too, which is great for her and gives us the chance to see her react genuinely to certain scenes and episodes like with Twin Suns the other week. Also I would say here we have been pretty good at keeping it spoiler free, and it may have calmed down for her on Youtube too, though that is another animal entirely over there! :D Omg I was actually drawing a blank on who Ashley played here in Rebels when I had to look up and remember Ahsoka was in this, man thats bad!! I like how Filoni managed to get in the main cast of Clone Wars in this show, as a thanks to them. We spoke about this previously too, that it was him who pushed for Freddie Prinze Jr to be Kanan when the Disney execs weren't keen on that; and it worked a treat. The end of episode one of this season really does end on such a downbeat tone, and you do feel the weight of the lives Sabine's weapon took, on her; and shows the follies of her youth (and I say that when she is barely 21 here!), coming back to haunt her in the most terrible way possible. "technological terror" - nice, how fitting too especially as we aren't far off that line appearing now. And it is a truly terrorising weapon, going onto a battlefield and knowing you could be torn apart or tortured for hours depending on whatever setting is used from it. Seeing Bo reclaim the Darksabre here has put me in the mood to perhaps rewatch Mando season 3 again (I don't need much excuse to see Katee Sackhoff in that armour again I have to admit!). We have a storm coming in over the Atlantic over the night so I'll be batten down the hatches tomorrow, so may watch it as well as Ahsoka later tonight or tomorrow. Sounds like a plan! :)
