"Well, to be fair, I did have a couple of gadgets which he probably didn't - like a teaspoon and an open mind.", The Doctor, "The Creature from the Pit" There are certain stories where you look for Jess's reaction to the concept, for Jess's reaction to the return of a character, for Jess's reaction to the guest actor ... In this case there could be only one thing to wait for ... for Jess's reaction to the monster! And, it looked even stranger when it was originally presented on set and there were some hurried changes made to make it, possibly, look just a bit less like ... um ... um ... yeah ... I'm going to stop talking about it now. But more importantly, K9's voice. David Brierley replaced John Leeson as the voice actor here. Of course we know that John comes back later to voice K9 in the New Who stories and the Sarah Jane Adventures, but it's a bit of a shock for the voice change. This was the first story that Lalla filmed as Romana-II. The story was originally written for the Romana-I and Mary Tamm and Lalla was even put in a costume that recalled Romana-I that she felt didn't suit her. You even get the a bit of the feel of the original Romana in some of her dialog with the bandits. Geoffrey Bayldon, who plays the Organon, the astrologer, was another distinguished guest star. Way back in the 1960's, he was even considered for the role of the 1st Doctor and later for the 2nd Doctor. He was best known on TV in the 1970s for the show "Catweazle" where he played a slightly similar character to Organon (that's an idea - I should watch Catweazle again!) and he played a character in the show "Worzel Gummidge" starring Jon Pertwee. The story was directed by Chris Barry who had been directing Classic Who since some of the very first Hartnell Dalek episodes in 1963 - that's a long association with the show (1979). A lot of the forest scenes were shot at Ealing which gives the different feeling. David Fisher, the writer of this one, had produced some nice stories for Classic Who - "The Stones of Blood" and "The Androids of Tara" and also the initial story work for last week's "City of Death". This one isn't as good. However, there are some nice quotable lines. But what a monster! "Our resarchers divide into two categories. The ones who have got close enough to find out something about it ... and the ones who are still alive.", Adrasta, "The Creature from the Pit"
