This episode dropped two weeks after the rest with zero indication it existed, which was such a delightful surprise. It adapts two stories from Volume 3 of the comic, which is the first of several to just be several short standalone stories instead of one big one, and the fans had really been wondering how the show would handle that, so this is a great way to do it. Especially since it shows the crew is willing to use animation for stories like Dream of a Thousand Cats that aren't suited at all to live action. That one is pretty much word for word from the original, so the really interesting part here is the story Calliope, which updates the original to the present day perfectly. Rather than Madoc just being a total jerk from the start, we see how his morality gets chipped away by the temptation of having a muse available and unable to resist him, and he also takes on very much the same vibes as the villains from Cobra Kai, where we see how easily a bad faith actor can use all the right buzzwords to come across as admirable and progressive. And of course this is aided by the very deliberate casting of a guy known for playing heroic and endearingly dorky characters, and seeing him twist and corrupt that reputation is fascinating. I look forward to more like this when we finally do get the next season.

I was really looking forward to seeing your reaction to this episode, and you didn't disappoint. Just like episode 6 this adapts two separate stories from the original comic book, and they did a really good job in my opinion. Even in the major story arcs each episode is typically two issues of the comic. In episode 6 there was more of a through line between The Sound Of Her Wings (the first half) and Men of Good Fortune (the second half) with Death as the linking character. These were two of my favourite stories from the comics. Clearly Dream Of A Thousand Cats couldn't have been made as live action, and I think they walked the line masterfully regarding the 'forcing' of Calliope, which was rather more explicit in the original comic. Yes Arthur Darvill plays a good villain, even though its not what he's best known for. The acting throughout was excellent, but did you notice the cast list for Dream Of A Thousand Cats? David & Georgia Tennant, Sandra Oh, Michael Sheen, James McAvoy amongst others! I expect that season 2 will still have stand alone episodes because that was a feature of the comics, and Neil Gaiman is guiding the adaptation to be faithful to his original work, unlike certain other TV adaptations we could mention!

That's also Tennant and Sheen's real wives along with them.

Yes, I too shared your surmise of the episode being more self-contained/standalone. As you saw, we were both correct. You nailed it right on the head of the theme of dreaming serving as inspiration. Start with the cat portion of the episode. Loved the animation. Sandra Oh made for a marvelous storyteller as the Prophet. The scene where her kittens were murdered... well, it was not good. I had to look away as I got fucking BEYOND fucking PISSED OFF at that scene. You talked about it being animated at least. That did NOT help. At all. I yelled at one point, “You motherfuckers did NOT make me watch this!!!” Mind you, that’s not aimed at anyone personally, just general venting. I went full on Palpatine mode, saying to the cat, concerning her PIECE. OF. SHIT. owner who murdered her sweet kittens, “Kill him. Kill him now. Imagine his face and balls are a scratching post and fucking claw furiously. DO IT!” Your own reaction got to me, especially as Rocco did cross my mind upon seeing the episode, and it made me think it would be difficult for you. I will say, Jess, that I think you handled it well, though I still wanted to give you a hug at that part. A most LOVELY idea of cats once ruling the world, and the dream they can rule again. When the cat portion ended, I had a moment, saying, “What, wait, no! I want more! The cats’ revenge! I must see the cats’ revenge!” Now to the Calliope portion of the episode. As soon as I saw Arthur Darvill, I knew you’d be happy to see him. Yeah, there is an interesting exploration of the pressure writers are under to create. Which is why, like you say, there’s respect for writers who have the set story in mind and stick to it. Like you mentioned Bates Motel, or Andor’s going to be like that with just the two seasons, and that’s it. Sidenote, I saw Madoc’s one novel had the title, The Cabaret of Dr. Caligari, which made me smile, and say, “Good touch.” It is in this episode that the great Derek Jacobi appears. I was waiting for him for a while. He was excellent as Erasmus Fry. Yeah, similar to what you described, once everything sunk in, the skin crawled, and I felt disgusted. I was sorry to hear you say that you got a bit fainty. True, you mention the worst of it is offscreen, but like the kittens, that does not help. The small bright side is as you noted, you are able to breathe now. Midway through the story, the disdain for Madoc was strong. I’d argue that he was worse, or at least more detestable than Erasmus for the reason of Madoc put forth the image of being a progressive man, and “seemed a saint when most he played the Devil.” as Shakespeare said. Sure, Erasmus is just as guilty of what Madoc did to Calliope, but at least he’s upfront about it. Both men are still, of course completely disgusting. Derek and Arthur gave amazing performances. Completely disgusting characters. God did I feel horrible for Calliope and Melissanthi Mahut delivered a great performance. It was so cathartic when Morpheus arrived and gave Madoc a veritable cornucopia of inspiration, your own reaction being wonderful, by the way. I relished seeing Madoc in the end having lost the inspiration. I said, “Ironic. He has dreamed a dream, but now that dream has gone from him.” And of course, he is distraught, dismayed, exhausted, leading me to quote from Fargo, and observe, “Perfectly natural. You see it all the time in the wild; the smaller animal going limp in the jaws of the larger. Genetic instinct. At some level, food knows it’s food.” I enjoyed the quiet concluding scene of Morpheus and Calliope having their moment. Especially as you said Morpheus showcases how he has gone through the growth he’s gone through. And now, season one of The Sandman is now concluded. It was most lovely, Jess, sharing this show with you and fellow subscribers. I await the second season, until then, thank you for the wonderful journey. And you are most welcome for all the kind words and support given for these reactions. I continue to hope you are doing well, recovering from being sick. Take care of yourself, Jess, and thank you again for the lovely reaction. It was wonderful.

I had suspected that the cat portion was adapted verbatim. I did read somewhere how Madoc was more openly vile from the start rather than the slide into villainy as is presented in the show. An excellent portrayal of an author who writes beloved books that inspires millions, who uses the right buzzwords to come across as admirable and progressive as you described, yet are not, in fact progressive and admirable. Sort of like J. K. Rowling who even gets name dropped in the episode. I caught that Gaiman got questioned about that, and I saw he responded by saying the line where she was mentioned was written and filmed when she was “an uncontroversial author and screenwriter”, though the parallel works perfectly. And yes, Arthur’s casting works beautifully with him playing against type.

There's quite a few videos on Youtube of people showing the episode to their cats, which of course get a ton of comments saying "Are you CRAZY?"

Thomas Corp

Jesus! Either people have a death wish, or they really are crazy to show that scene to their cats. I do believe the cats would bite your goddamn head off doing something like that.

Nicole Mazza

Girlfriend in Sheen's case, but yes, Anna Lundberg and Georgia Tennant were in it.

I loved this reaction! They were consistent this season - "one shot" issues were each handled as half of an episode. Each one was done so well - I could not have asked for better adaptations.
