This one has some great moments, but also seriously suffers from only having a standard episode length to work with. Riker is corrupted by the Q power so unbelievably quickly that it's impossible to take any of it seriously, especially the part where from the way it's presented, apparently we're supposed to be just as surprised as him when Picard points out he's been saying "Jean-Luc." And of course, Wil Wheaton loves to point out that the guy they cast as the adult Wesley (though awkwardly still dubbed by Wheaton) looks absolutely nothing like how he actually grew up. You'd think they would at least be able to find someone with the right hair and/or eye color.

We have gone from Ferengi shenanigans to Q’s chicanery. Of course, as you described, the Ferengi shenanigans you adore, Q’s chicanery, you find frustrating. Me, I find old Q most intellectually stimulating. That said, you say you ultimately like his chicanery, frustration and all. I simply got a laugh at the slight difference of opinion. This episode is great. Not my favorite Q episode, we’ll get to that one later, but this one is great. Minor quibbles due to first season inconsistencies; some I can reconcile with headcanons, others I give a pass. Always a pleasure to see John be delightfully mercurial as dear Q. Yes, an excellent theme of Riker being gifted the powers of the Q. As you saw, Jonathan became quite dramatic. It’s great how they highlight the moral and ethical dilemmas particularly well showcased in the death of the little girl. Sure, she could be saved, but that road can easily lead to getting too lost in the powers of the Q, leading to the path of damnation. Picard’s faith in his crew was great. I loved his quoting the Bard, and Patrick’s brilliance with that dialogue. Better still, how Picard shows he knows the material by highlighting Hamlet’s soliloquy, though said with irony, Picard says with CONVICTION, damn it. I knew you’d love the sweet moment Picard had with Tasha; Patrick and Denise were lovely in that scene. Sidenote, concerning the first name basis that you have with certain characters. One, yeah, most of them, I refer to by their given Christian names. I only refer to Picard and Riker by their surnames, and Worf and Data only have the one name to begin with. Two, this does contrast with the original series crew who are referred to exclusively by surname, or nickname in Bones and Scotty’s case, and it showcases, I think, anyway, the more intimate character focus on Next Gen. A big highlight when the crew rejects Riker’s gifts. I knew Geordi’s scene would get you. I was right. The look on your face and in your eyes, good Lord, was it beautiful, Jess. LeVar sold that scene SO well. I also loved, as you described, Beverly saying, “Fuck this noise, man!” and trying to leave. Most everyone points out how off the mark the show was on Wesley, ten years older. Wil himself gets a good laugh about it. Just look at Wil in Flubber to see how he really looked ten years after this. Flubber incidentally being my introduction to Wil when I first saw it in theaters when I was six. Come to think of it, that was also my formal introduction to Robin Williams in live action as a matter of fact. Other highlights were Picard’s sass, which, yes, was strong. Especially his saying to Riker, “As you should.” I bust a gut laughing, “Jesus, Jean-Luc!” Your own reaction to that moment was great. Concerning the opening scene. When Q appeared as the serpent creatures, I jumped a little, and said, “Goddamn it, forgot about that.” hence my not giving you a head’s up. To be fair, I’d say you handled it well enough. You mentioned how they didn’t look all that realistic, that same thought crossed my mind as well whilst rewatching it. Ergo, though you did not appreciate the snakes, it was tame compared to past sudden serpent surprises. Oh, this reaction was tremendous! Easily in the top three of the reactions to Next Gen thus far. Thank you so much for the tremendous reaction, Jess! I loved it so much!

This story has some nice moments - but the episode itself looks cheap. The planet set appears to have been left over from TOS; complete with the red backlighting. (Even The Last Outpost made more of an effort in that regard.) The concept (getting your hearts desire) works well, though.

I have to say Picard and Dr. Crusher are my favorites. When this first came out, we didn't have that many strong female characters. That's why I love characters like her and Jessica Fletcher from murder, she wrote.
