Ah, watching the Shenanigans by Mike Flanagan embraces you with a warm autumnal feeling. Made better by seeing your reactions to them. I like how you said, much like past Flanagan shows, we’re only getting so much of the characters’ characters at a leisurely pace. For instance, the glimpse of Dupin’s past. I love how through Arthur’s scene with Madeline, we get the hints that in addition to being the family attorney, he is Al Neri, Mike Ehrmantraut, and Joubert all wrapped up into one enigmatic and diabolical package. Which made me even more excited that dear Mark was in this playing such a role. The scenes of Victorine and Alessandra and the chimp, upon seeing them, I thought of you, and felt bad that I couldn’t give you a warning because of spoilers. It is difficult to watch those scenes. I laughed a bit too much at your questions concerning the scenes of Tamerlane and her husband, Bill, and Camille with her assistants. When you outright asked what you were watching, I quipped, “Jess, it’s a fool who searches for logic in the disconcerting bewilderment that is the carnal lifestyles of the rich and famous. With this family, even Robin Leach would have a hard time figuring out what’s up.” The focus on Prospero in this episode was great. Sauriyan Sapkota was excellent. Like you said, he’s so determined to prove his worth that he’s trying to create a blackmail grift through his overly elaborate dead-tech, post-modernistic bullshit Eyes Wide Shut knock off style shindig, hoping that will gain his father’s approval. It is messed up beyond belief, his attempting to ultimately have his way with Morella, to stick it to Frederick. I’m with you on being a cautious sort that I wouldn’t have been there either. You do note that Morella likely has her reasons for why she made the choice she made, even so, yeah, this is not the ideal nor the safest night out. I’m sure some people would say stuff like “remembering when you were young and stupid, wanting to cut loose without worrying about consequences” which, no, I don’t. I’ve never even been to a club. And at work or otherwise, when I get asked to do some of that crazy stuff, I end up saying stuff like, “No thank you. I’m not in high school anymore. Shit, I’m not even in my twenties anymore, and I didn’t even want to do this kind of thing when I was that age to begin with, so again, no thank you.” It is intriguing how Verna (Love you caught about her name.) outright warns Prospero with the portent of consequences. Carla was wonderful in that scene. Now to the sprinklers. You clocked something about them early on, and that it would end horrifically. My brother and I, that was our assessment as well. My brother pegged the toxins, I said that even if there was only water in those tanks, there’s still the concern that said water is, at best, unhealthy, which Prospero never bothered to check, the idiot. You summarized it well, Jess, by saying that it’s an excellent slow burn of you know, if not you suspect that something horrific and awful will be happening, and the tension just builds and builds. And you did not disappoint with the reaction when the sprinklers were set off, drowning everyone in the Red Death. Another wonderful reaction to this show, Jess, thank you so much.

Now we really start to see that this is the kind of story that for me is almost impossible to screw up: watching a bunch of horrible people marching unstoppably toward their slow, painful comeuppance. It's the same reason I now call Saw X the best of that series, and why I think Blackberry is the best of the current trend of "product biopics." I especially love the sound design of that final scene, with all that liquid sloshing around doing as much if not more to sell you on the horror as the visuals. And then there's the question that was consuming me at this point, and hopefully you too: If Flanagan was willing to burn off an epic set piece like this (so to speak) in just the second episode, what the hell is waiting in the rest of the show?

Pretty difficult to screw up such a story, I agree. There is sometimes a concern of balance in the writing, though as this is Flanagan, no worries there. Haven’t seen Blackberry, but I’m aware of the cast, which has me intrigued. Saw was never much my series, though I have been hearing the new one is quite good, and you say you consider it the best of the series. Maybe I’ll give it a shot, just so long as there’s not a repeat of THAT scene from Saw II or one like it anyway. The sound design at the end of this episode was amazing, top-notch job in being as you said, “doing as much if not more to sell you on the horror as the visuals”. Though not necessarily my biggest burning question as I was content to sit back and let the story unfold and speak for itself, there was I agree that thought of, “What the FUCK is going to follow if that scene was in episode two!?” It’s great suspense.

I always appreciate a good Three Days of the Condor reference.

The final visual signifier of the Blackberry company hitting rock bottom, which is perfectly set up throughout the whole movie, actually made me gasp out loud in the theater.
