And so we get the annual episode that was thrown the scraps of the season's budget after the rest had their fill. Graham Williams was thoroughly unimpressed by the script, but there were no others available, so he chucked it into the season's second-to-last spot hoping the finale, the six part Douglas Adams opus Shada, would cause the fans to forget all about it. This backfired big time when a TV strike forced that story to be abandoned, so that Horns of Nimon became the de facto finale. But unlike certain other stories I could mention, it's at least bad in an endlessly fun way, in particular whenever Graham Crowden and Malcolm Terris are onscreen devouring the scenery. Terris actually improvised his catchphrase "Weakling scum" and no one cared enough to tell him to cut it out, so he just kept spamming it.

"Every single time I say "What could possibly go wrong?", something goes ...", The Doctor, "The Horns of Nimon" Graham Crowden as Soldeed is wonderfully over-the-top here. Too much? It is a bit panto and probably makes the story feel a bit silly - but no, the performance is just glorious! When you finish this story, what performance are *you* going to remember? The writer, Anthony Read, had been a script editor on Classic Who for part of the 15th season and for the 16th. I think this script was intended as a more serious, although light-weight, story reference to the Greek myth (and they're not in the least bit subtle about the references), but if you let Tom and Graham Crowden loose on the script you get what you get. It's not a masterpiece - but I have a good time watching it. I love that Romana has made her own sonic screwdriver. And it's even more fun that the Doctor then tries to swap his own for hers, until Romana catches him doing it. I really like the CSO curtain entrance to the Complex. I think it works well, except when sometime a few of the folds don't register for the overlay and just look black. There's a "famous" costume malfunction in this one - just at the end of the second episode (when some of us are getting distracted by the Nimon's platform shoes). "K9, sometimes I think I'm wasted just rushing around the universe saving planets from destruction.", The Doctor, "The Horns of Nimon"
