That’s a good way that you put it in that it dealt with four different people dealing with four different sets of traumas. Addressing your one critique: I take your point of feeling the initial set-up was rushed just a hair. As you note, we do have limited time left, hence the likely reason as to why it’s rushed as it is. I don’t think that bugged me that much, but again, I take your point. It does hurt seeing Dwight being at his lowest. Similar to what you described I can’t say I blame him. Past a point, if I were in his shoes, I’d be wondering what kind of sick cosmic joke God is playing on me. Hell, the set-up of his going back to the Sanctuary under the similar circumstances to the past, a man just ponders is it fate, or happenstance, or just absurdly BAD fucking luck. It is emotionally cathartic of Dwight and Sherry both coming to terms together with their traumas, their self-loathing, and desire to just end things. Austin and Christine were most excellent. Likewise, Jenna was amazing selling the pain that June is going through, and how shaken she is. Little wonder that Odessa doesn’t have the strongest faith in them and tries taking the bullet out herself. I found I was a touch mean when she expressed the old PADRE ways being right and wanted nothing to do with the company that she’s with. I deadpanned, “Would you rather they dragged Cult Leader Ratched from whatever deep pit of Hell she ended up in? Would that make you happy?” I understand where everyone was coming from with their traumas. You fight so hard to save certain people, you fail time and time again, eventually you get consumed by guilt and despair. I mean, I’ve not lost people like how it happens in the universe of The Walking Dead, but I know the pain of looking after someone, caring for someone, doing everything within your power to keep them safe and healthy, and it isn’t enough, leaving you with guilt and self-loathing. And as you say, I agree that trying in and of itself is sometimes the best anyone can do. I keep going back to probably my favorite line from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, “But I tried, didn’t I? Goddamn it, at least I did that.” In the end, it’s nice to see everyone does try, they succeed, and come out of this with a stronger bond than before. The bad guy of the week was a touch insufferable. When we saw his compatriot whom Dwight threw in the furnace to cook wasn’t put down, I noted, “Oh, so you weren’t being hyperbolic about the fellow getting the satisfaction of Dwight being killed.” Karmic moment when the walker went after the bad guy instead of Dwight. And yes, credit to Dwight for having the arc that you’ve gone from being onscreen, and being victim to your hatred, your anger. To now, he is a most adored character. The sign of excellent acting, writing, and character development. I would have to think if he is reigning champ in that department for you, but I would concur that he’s at least top five for you in terms of an evolving perception of a character and going from loathing to loving them. And to conclude on Strand abducting Troy’s daughter, which I loved your reaction to that, especially when you said, “Oh, Strand.” the way you did. I, myself, got a small diabolical laugh out of the scene as well, saying, “Strand, you old crafty devil, you.” A most phenomenal reaction, Jess, I thank you so much.
