I can't even imagine how excited Carla Gugino was when these scripts were delivered, and she saw she'd get to just do one amazing soliloquy after another, each time as a different kind of character. And hopefully the earlier stuff with the chimps was worth it to see them get sweet payback like this. Too bad it apparently wasn't feasible to actually show the attack on the budget Netflix gave, but at least the aftermath is done incredibly well, and the bloody handprints where Camille tried to crawl away are an especially nice touch.

Carla Gugino is amazing in this series. I mean all the main cast are, but she's given so much to do. In that vein it's a shame that Camille gets killed off this early as Kate Siegel usually one of my favourites in a Flanagan show. I love the lemon speech. Rough episode for animal lovers with both the chimps and the cat. And I haven't forgotten what Mike F did to us with the dog in Midnight Mass (RIP Pike, gives Flanagan the hard stare)

The video freezes at 14:07, and only starts again at 14:15.

A great thing about this is that, yes, the tension rises as you know horrible things will happen, and you’re just waiting for the other shoe to drop, and hoping your heart doesn’t give out before it does. I love how we start with the aftermath of what happened to Prospero. They sell it so well with Arthur wading through the mess. Great when Morella reveals she’s still alive, giving you and Arthur a start. Talking with my brother, something we really loved was how the sprinkler set-up had no influence from Verna. It was purely an accident. I loved how Roderick spells it out and sells how bad the acid was by saying that they “couldn’t ship it because it was so FUCKING corrosive.” Even better is how everyone’s suspicion of foul play due to the timing of the wait staff leaving. I do love how Arthur entertains the idea of it being coincidental, and even then, the timing is suspect. He even mentions the idea of a smoke break, which in his shoes, I would think would explain and justify one, maybe two people leaving right before, but when it’s all of them, I don’t blame them for being skeptical. I like how Dupin mentions a similar train of thought. Yeah, it’s horrifying seeing Morella in the state she’s in. I loved the contrast between the young Roderick to present day Roderick where his younger self is far more idealistic, and his older self is so deep in the decay of his ill-gotten gains. Succinctly highlighted in his lemonade monologue which sounds more convoluted than the frozen orange juice scheme in Trading Places. Lord did Bruce sell that monologue, and I loved your reaction to it. I anticipated Griswold’s actions. I liked your comments on Madeline, and how Annabel is wary of her, which leads to Roderick reciting more of the famous poem. That’s a fair point you make of if Prospero was only part of the family for such a short time, an ambivalent reaction to his death does make sense. Napoleon seems the only one really broken up about it, leading to his drug binge. Which brings me to the part where I should have prepared myself better given my familiarity of the source material. You say you hated the part with Pluto. I assure you, Jess, your hatred of that part was tame compared to mine. We see the close-up of Napoleon seeing Pluto, the pool of blood, and the knife, I looked away, and yelled, “Oh, FUCK no!! NO!!!” I ended up having to pause, got up to pace. Ultimately, I grabbed a cold beer, chugged about a quarter of it in one go, and put a couple more cold ones in the freezer so they’d get extra chilly for later. Thankfully the immediate scene following had Arthur, thus dear Mark helped calm me down some. Now to Camille. Yes, morality aside, she does seem quite good at her job. You spoke most well about how she’s most detached from the truth, the only real “truth” she’s holding onto is hatred for Victorine. They raise the idea that she hates Victorine for being able to hide her nature. Thus, bringing an idea that Camille thinks Victorine is who she should be, to which I think, “No, she’s who you WANT to be, Camille.” Good to see Camille’s assistants, Beth and Toby, get out of the extremely toxic arrangement, and their final bit of defiance. Verna is surely making the rounds. Her big speech here, I was saying, “GodDAMN is Carla killing it in this!” As you are observing, she’s giving the children an out, and they’re not listening. And again, it seems she’s not directly causing or influencing the deaths, rather, the children are bringing about their own destruction. Of course, a woman named Camille, in the Rue Morgue, that one’s a forgone conclusion and a half, and incidentally I saw Nope shortly before this, so the tension was high from that. Clearly, Camille never saw the Gordy’s Home bit from SNL. I knew the plot point of the horrific things done to the chimps would upset you. You’ve spoken of that in the past, as I recall, about beauty products, thus I knew you would speak about that. It’s for this reason that it’s chimpanzees rather than orangutans as the former have been used in animal testing. I loved everything about what you said about that topic. Oh, is seeing the aftermath of Camille’s death horrific. Thank you for this lovely reaction, Jess, and thank you for just the most wonderful post-episode thoughts and comments that come from your reactions to the Shenanigans by Mike Flanagan.

Carla is surely amazing in this. I wasn’t too sorry to see Camille go given how disgustingly petty she was, but I do get what you mean that Kate Siegel was fantastic, thus it’s a shame we don’t get more of her great acting. Yeah, I knew the animal scenes would bother Jess, and the imagery with the cats got me LIVID. Yeah, I remember the dog in Midnight Mass, I also remember the dead cats in that show as well.

Thomas Corp

I just love how Carla’s bringing a Lon Chaney and/or Peter Sellers type energy where she can bring to life varied personas. Since I saw Nope, I figured if you were to see Camille be killed, it would have to be cgi, which like you noted, the budget wasn’t up to the task. It still works as our imaginations kick in and make it worse than anything they could have put on screen. The handprints are indeed a nice touch.

I had a feeling you wouldn't take everything with Pluto well after your reaction to that one particular scene in The Sandman. Speaking of, Jon Hamm is taking the Varga-type role in the new season of Fargo and is predictably killing it

Thomas Corp

Yeah, I have yet to start the new season, but it is on my to-do list. Hopefully it is better than the last, which wasn’t strictly speaking bad, I enjoyed it well enough, it just felt a touch overly cluttered, and it felt like the pandemic forced them to alter the ending. I am excited to see Jon Hamm and especially Jennifer Jason Leigh who is beyond an underrated actress.

Ryan

It very much feels like they listened to why people didn't like Season 4 and corrected. One of the big ones is that the "chaos agent" character like Malvo or Varga actually has a philosophy behind his actions again, after Oraetta was just pure random nastiness.

Thomas Corp

Fascinating though Oraetta was, and excellent Jessie Buckley was in the role, yeah, she was quite random. Favorite character of last season was Rabbi, though Oraetta was close to it, though the criticisms people had about her were valid.
