No worries about the sniffles and coughs. Likewise, Jess, no worries ever if Rocco makes a bit of noise at dinnertime during you filming a reaction. My cat, Muffin, was the same way. She got quite insistent about being fed at regular intervals. This is quite a delightful episode. I am most pleased to see you adored this episode. It is a highlight seeing the crew in their off-hours Picard was immensely relatable wanting to take the time to pour himself in the pages of a good book and escape for a while. As an Aries, I related heavily to Worf’s strong competitive nature. I had a feeling that you would comment on that. A Tasha and Worf episode would be quite nice. I KNEW you’d love the Data and Geordi painting plot. Yes, the peanut gallery comments were uncalled for as it was nice painting. The sub-plot with Riker and the program was quite something. You inquired about his playing. Jonathan does in fact play the trombone; he has the lips and arms for it. I know this because I didn’t have the arms for it in my younger days, my brother just barely had the arms for it. I suppose I do now, though what skill I had has atrophied, thus that probably wouldn’t go well if I tried. Still, I do love the sound of good low brass. Hearing Riker playing the trombone got me misty eyed some. Got me right in the soul. I love how the overall conflict of the episode is not malicious. The inhabitants of the planet desperately needed help, and the chance of rejection was too great. I also appreciated how they anticipate there will be punishment and accept that without complaint. A big highlight was seeing Picard and Riker get the damn thing done, and I absolutely adored all of your reactions to that. Likewise, I loved your reactions to Data stepping up to the plate, and yes, he was most impressive. I loved Geordi being a sweetheart telling Data not to blame himself for painting instead of working. And I cried some, when Tasha stepped in saying that even if Data was working, events may have transpired just the same. It led me to say, “Ah, God bless you, Tasha.” and then upon seeing your reactions to that scene, especially you saying to Data to not put himself down about the painting, and your encouragement on said painting, had me saying, “Ah, God bless you, Jess.” The denouement was hysterical of Riker being forlorn over the program being lost. I was a bit of a wiseass, saying, “Well, Riker, win a few, lose a few.” Again, I just adored that you loved this episode as you did, Jess. It warmed my heart tremendously seeing your reaction to it. This reaction was much appreciated, thank you.

This episode was intended to go before The Big Goodbye, and serve as the explanation for why the holodeck gets so out of whack there. But now that those episodes are such a famous and accepted part of the whole franchise, it really isn't necessary anymore. It's especially amusing to see everyone making such a big deal about Minuet, and insisting the holodeck couldn't have made her on its own, as later on we'll be getting tons of fully sentient holograms on her level and beyond. Oh, and anyone else want to shout at Beverly to not create the Borg?

One of my absolute favourite episodes of the first season, this is (as you appropriately expressed it) adorable. Jonathan Frakes originally learnt to play the Trombone,to professional standard,as a fallback career in case he never found work as an actor. I love everything about this episode - but I must give special credit to the music; both inside the Holodeck ("The nearness of you"), and the Bynar Theme. Lovely.
