Douglas Adams hated how this script turned out, and only signed away the rights to finish the story by accident when he didn't notice that particular contract in the middle of a bunch of other paperwork he was rushing through. The fans very much disagree and are very happy it happened. This completed version was made in 2017, with the 83 year old Tom Baker matching his old performance perfectly.

"I told you you'd got the time wrong, Doctor.", "Yes, but you're always saying that.", "You're always getting the time wrong.", Romana and the Doctor, "Shada" This story is famous for not being finished. I'm not sure how many attempts there have been to complete it (I'll probably miss one): there was a sneaky fan edit, a BBC published version with Tom providing linking narration, a web-cartoon version with Paul McGann and Lalla for the 40th anniversary, the omnibus movie with these animated sections, and then most recently that movie was re-edited to a 6-part story - and that's the one you watched. Oh, and there were also various attempts to publish it as a book - most notably Douglas Adams, himself, used several elements and mixed them with some elements of "City of Death" in his "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency" novel - using, for example, the most adorable character here - Professor Chronotis. Would the story have been so well regarded had it only been an ordinary 6-part final story for the season? It has probably been enhanced by its odd history, but yes, it would have been - it's a good story. However, Douglas Adams, himself, didn't rate it particularly highly - although enough, I suppose, that he did use bits of it for his book. Professor Chronotis is wonderfully delightful. I always wonder if the milk lump joke plays for people. I had read the "Dirk Gently" book well before I ever got to see these episodes, so I was well primed for it. Does it work for first-time viewers? Romana's costume is great - perfect for a summer's ride in a punt. After a few dodgy costume choices in some stories this season - this time it they've got it right. The joke where Professor Chronotis says has "a memory like a ..." and eventually remembers "sieve" was reused from a shory story entry sent in by a 12-year old Douglas Adams to a magazine. "Well, when I was on the river I heard the babble of inhuman voices." ... "Oh, undergraduates talking to each other I expect. I'm trying to have it banned.", The Doctor and Professor Chronotis, "Shada"

When the double video version of Shada came on the market, a small book version of the script was included. Tom provided scene setting commentary from a comfy armchair filling in for the unfilmed parts of the story. Really very entertaining all-in-all and the script book is a nice little keepsake. Jess. I hope you have a lovely Christmas holiday and let's all hope a better new year. As The Fourth Doctor once remarked, "One good hope is worth a cartload of certainties!"

I always forget that Christopher Neame (he with the fabulous outfit) was in this! He's in my fave Hammer film -- 'Dracula AD 1972' -- playing a devotee (and later vampire) of Christopher Lee's Dracula! ❤️

Also, back when I first watched 'The Pilot' with Capaldi, I immediately got some Professor Chronotis vibes from the Doctor-as-university-professor.
