Much like the Obi-Wan show, I am happy to start this journey rewatching Ahsoka and sharing it with you. I most enjoyed it, despite the change of release time that it had, which most everyone loved, and I HATED, the show was great. Yeah, it helps tremendously to have seen Rebels so as to fully understand the weight. My brother and sister in-law, despite my direct insistence, watched this without seeing the animated shows, though from what they told me, they followed along decently enough. The show feels very Kurosawa by way of Leone, with hints of Tartakovsky and Lean. Timeline-wise, we’re at around, at least a decade, give or take, after Rebels. The opening scene was fantastic complete with the opening crawl, I quite liked you liked that as well. We are introduced to our Dark Side characters. Or were they “Sinister Agents”? Baylan Skoll and his apprentice, Shin Hati. Both with wolf themed names as is fitting for Filoni’s fondness for the lupine creatures. Both were rapidly embraced by the fans. Ivanna Sakhno received copious attention for her turn as Shin. And the late Ray Stevenson, for whom this episode was dedicated, it warmed the heart seeing everyone warmly embrace his role of Baylan. I was sorry to hear of Ray’s death months before this premiered, thus it was nice seeing everyone being kind. The two characters wrecked some shit, which sadly means Mark Rolston only gets the one scene. Great to again see Diana Lee Inosanto return as Morgan Elsbeth, and to reveal she is a Nightsister had me excited. A surprise to see Huyang again. Likewise, a pleasant surprise to see Ryder be physically portrayed by Clancy Brown, which also means two men in this show who have played Lex Luthor, the greatest criminal mind of the century. It also had me wondering, “How many guys from Shawshank we got in this show anyhow?” I am pleased that only the basic driving plot was known to you. I liked how you quickly realized if Thrawn does appear, it could also mean Ezra. You heard that lots of hardcore Rebels fans were excited about possibly seeing Ezra again. Me, I was a heartless bastard, who kept asking, “Where is he? Where? Is Grand? Admiral? Thrawn?” I so loved your reaction to seeing Hera. I knew in advance that the thoroughly terrific Mary Elizabeth Winstead would be in this. She’s been someone whose career I’ve followed for a long time, essentially from the beginning of her career; she caught my eye early. She’s amazing in anything I’ve seen her in, for instance, next to David Thewlis, she was my favorite on the third season of Fargo. And she’s been on numerous fan casts of mine for Star Wars for many years, so when I heard she would be part of Star Wars, I was just happy for that. To then hear she would be Hera was most exciting, and right out the gate Mary is excellent as Hera. Your Queen is in very, VERY good hands, Jess. Natasha Liu Bordizzo I am not familiar with, but she made a solid entrance as Sabine, who incidentally, is the character my brother and sister in-law were the most confused by. My sister in-law asked if we knew her, my brother said he gave a general surmise about Sabine, which when I heard it, I said, “Eh, close enough.” You can tell she’s hurting what with her going all Scar in missing the big ceremony. Yes, a driving mystery is what transpired between her and Ahsoka. You can tell that the solitude and loneliness is chipping away at them. “There is no solitude greater than that of the samurai unless it be that of a tiger in the jungle... perhaps...” as the expression goes. A ronin such as Ahsoka and a Mandalorian like Sabine are no strangers to solitude, but the level they’re at would rival that saying. I do love, as you did, Hera’s talk with Ahsoka after Sabine, to the surprise of no one, ran off with the map that looks like it’s straight from Treasure Planet, underrated Disney film by the way. You asked is it stupid to think that the Mortis Gods play a part in unlocking the map? No. It is knowledgeable. You are drawing from that which you have learned. You even sounded like my brother and I, two lifelong passionate fans who have delved deep into the lore and expanded universe. I am most proud of you, Jess. The fight between Shin and Sabine was great, and your reaction to Shin running Sabine through was excellent. Predictably, there was much static over that. I saw it, assessed the placement of the stab, and said, “That’s a wound.” A solid first reaction to this show. I hope like the Obi-Wan reactions, the views are most profitable for you. Thank you for the reaction, and congratulations again for hitting one hundred thousand subscribers on youtube, Jess!

Ray Stevenson's death was especially devastating for coming so soon after his getting a major role in a worldwide monster hit like RRR, which looked like it would finally lead to him becoming the A-lister I always hoped he would be after discovering him back on HBO's Rome.

Like I said on the Rebels finale, this show is a deeply compressed version of Dave Filoni's plans for a much longer animated series. And while it mostly does a good job not feeling too rushed, one big casualty of losing all that time is throwing us into Ahsoka and Sabine's relationship after missing ten years and having to grasp at any snippet of conversation about what happened in that time, when I imagine the original show's whole first season would have covered Sabine becoming Ahsoka's apprentice and ultimately how things ended badly between them. But if you can get past that hurdle, there's a lot to appreciate. I'm especially impressed with how much Rosario Dawson has improved at copying the way Ahsoka was animated, as during her first appearance I had serious trouble seeing her as not just a random other Togruta, but now all she has to do is fold her arms and I instantly see Ahsoka. On the same note, the casting for Hera and Sabine got some controversy for not looking or sounding enough like how we knew them from Rebels, but I've long since made my peace with that kind of thing and quickly got into these new versions. Plus, I'm very amused by how Ezra got the same introduction as Aladdin, and now Sabine has the same one as Ariel. It was initially a disappointment that they didn't cast Mena Massoud as Ezra to play off that connection, but in his brief time this guy nails everything about the role, so I got over it.

My brother did inquire about the Ahsoka and Sabine storyline in that he wondered had we seen what was alluded to in this. I told him no. I didn’t mind much as I sometimes like the leisurely storytelling of telling rather than showing, and only dropping small hints leaving the audience to piece it all together. I get that might not be for everyone, it worked for me though. Rosario, I liked from the get-go as Ahsoka, but yes, she has improved with the body language so much. Hera and Sabine’s portrayals I thought were great. The spirits of the characters were captured. A little jarring with Mary wearing the blue contact lenses as I’m used to Mary with her natural eye color. But it does help her disappear into the role of Hera. And when you have Mary in Star Wars, I don’t care if she ended up playing the granddaughter of Bea Arthur’s character from the Christmas special, I just was beyond happy to see Mary be in Star Wars. I’ve loved her in pretty much everything I’ve seen her in, Fargo especially, and she was wonderful as Hera. That is an amusing contrast of Ezra having the Aladdin introduction whilst Sabine has an Ariel meets Scar introduction, complete with dialogue straight from Lion King. I did remember it being floated around the idea of Mena Massoud as Ezra, and I found the idea agreeable. I also remember the chatter of Rahul Kahil possibly playing an older Ezra; I was VERY agreeable to that provided the timeline would work. As it is, the casting for Ezra that we got with Eman Esfandi as Ezra, as Jess said, really spot on.

Yay, Ahsoka! Or should I say Rebels season 5! :D I had tears of delight in my eyes throughout this. You know how much Rebels has become my favourite Star Wars media, and to see those characters and Lothal itself (which looked great!) brought to life, brought joy to me. Hera took a bit of getting used to since its not Vanessa Marshall and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (who I believe is married to Ewan McGregor these days, so perhaps we may see an Obi-Wan cameo!) as it went on, began to feel like the Hera we all love. Seeing Clancy Brown back as Ryder Azadi too was great, as was Jai Kel who was one of the cadets at the academy we followed in season 1 and 4 with Ezra. Lothal looked stunning, and it even gave me a warm feeling seeing that highway and Ezra's Tower, since we know them so well at this point. And yes, as you also saw later, Eman Esfandi kills it as Ezra, he really does feel like that loveable Loth-rat! Seeing the Spectres back was great, though we've already seen Zeb now and with Kanan gone there is only one remaining - the star of the show, our beloved little war criminal murder droid!! I didn't buy Sabine being an apprentice to Ahsoka when this aired, though I trusted Filoni on where he wanted to go with this, for which I'm sure plentiful discussions were had before I came back to here! Her being trained as a Jedi of all things, hit me for six. The actress playing her sold me though that it was Sabine. She has the feistiness down well for the character, and she brought out more of Sabine's character as the show went on. I did love that when she went into her stance to fight Shin, it was one of the stances we see Ezra teach her in Rebels - nice touch! Morgan Elsbeth being a Nightsister is really great. It adds to her and Ahsoka's fight in Mandalorian now, when it was wondered at the time why someone of Ahsoka's calibre had some issue in defeating her. It makes sense now if she's from the Nightsister clan however. Baylan is very interesting and far more than a generic dark force-user. This is a hint from Filoni of someone being a 'Dark Jedi' - though in canon that can't exist. What I think I'd prefer to call him is a fallen Jedi, a bit like Dooku before he got manipulated into becoming a Sith apprentice by Sidious. I think after Order 66, he like so many survivors, lost their way, but instead of finding the light once again inside them, fell to the dark. He is now a darksider who has a kind of warped apprentice (complete with Padawan braid too note), and is a reflection of Ahsoka; someone who also isn't a Jedi now, but a being of light. Baylan does want power, but it seems early on, he's not in on the religion and fanaticism that being a Sith entails. This was a very solid start to the series. :)

The great thing now for you Jess, is that you are no longer behind on Star Wars, Bad Batch aside; so that you'll be able to see the new live (and possibly animated) series as they air from now on. And hence your speculation about certain things moving forward, will be equally as valid as many devoted fans of the franchise. :)

First off, welcome back. Considering your passionate love of Rebels, I wouldn’t doubt how emotional it was for you to see its locations and characters lovingly brought to live action. I get how it would take a moment to adjust to Vanessa not being Hera. But Mary is so marvelous. I’ve been a fan of hers for a long time now. And like you said, she feels like the Hera we know and love. As I mentioned, only mild distraction was the eye color, though I got past that quick. And yes, Mary is married to our dear Obi-Wan. Clancy showing up as Ryder was a welcome surprise. As I recall, there was plenty of static over Sabine being Ahsoka’s Jedi apprentice. I wasn’t averse to it myself and was curious how it would play out. Particularly as you noted, I held trust in Filoni that he had a solid plan as to where he’s going with it. Natasha, yes, got Sabine’s feistiness down pat. What’s interesting is that Diana was somewhat purposefully cast as Morgan for reasons of she’s someone who would plausibly be an even match for Ahsoka, combat-wise. To learn of her being a Nightsister makes her more interesting, and a greater threat to Ahsoka than originally thought. Baylan is, I agree, a fallen Jedi albeit a lighter shade of the Dark Side than our dear old Count Dooku, who it is fair to compare the two. Just as it is a fair description to call Baylan a foil to Ahsoka, as Shin is a foil to Sabine. Yeah, solid start to the show.

True. The only thing that might need to be delayed is Tales of the Jedi, depending on when the new season comes out and how far Jess would be in The Bad Batch. Assuming there would be a tie-in to that. Or say it ties into the Sequel Trilogy, though Jess has seen that except for The Rise of Skywalker last I heard. Barring that, yeah, Jess should be good to go, seeing the new Star Wars stuff live.
