This story was under a lot of pressure to win the fans back after the last season abruptly ended with "My dreams of conquest!" And it does indeed look spectacular for the time, but that unfortunately came with a cost as it went wildly overbudget, and the director was never let back on the show. And there was plenty more behind the scenes trouble, as Tom and Lalla disagreed with basically every single idea from new producer John Nathan-Turner, and their own notoriously rocky relationship was at the lowest it ever got.

It's honestly a miracle season 18 got made at all, let alone how good most of it turned out, considering all of the behind the scenes drama.

"The fibre-optic transmission system has a mean time between failure of 2000 years.", "We could do with that in the TARDIS.", Mena and the Doctor, "The Leisure Hive" Firstly, John Leeson is back as K9! - he just sounds so right. I like the new synth theme. There's a nice YouTube video with Peter Howell describing how he went about creating the new theme - but the video has a few tiny story spoilers so I'll post the link later. We also switch to using the Radiophonic Workshop for the incidental music. I'm not sure about the Doctor's new burgundy outfit - you're a better judge of this that I am, but I really don't like the `?' on the shirt collar (to emphasize the "Who?" I guess). That's all the new producer's (John Nathan-Turner = JNT) idea - and not his best. Barry Letts, the legendary Classic Who producer of the 3rd Doctor era, had an executive producer credit here to help out JNT as the new producer for this season. The Brighton beach stuff was JNT's idea as well. Even before watching this I knew I would have to turn down the reaction volume as K9 follows the ball into the sea. Talking about the Brighton beach scene, I had forgotton how long some of the non-dialogue panning shots were in this story. I love Classic Who but, wow, those pans really took their time. The production goes a bit overboard with their new video effects tool in this story - almost a "look what we bought - let's have a story that can use this effect's button". "How did you get out?", "There's a hole in the back.", "There isn't one.", "There is now!", Pangol and the Doctor, "The Leisure Hive"
