sorry to break bad news to you if you are unaware but Richard Franklin who played Mike Yates was revealed to have died yesterday

The most interesting thing here to me is that RTD is trying his hand at a more Moffat-type plot, with a big mystery around the companion. And he's already way ahead by making Ruby such an engaging character outside of whoever her parents were, in contrast to poor Jenna Coleman having to spend her first season as the most generic companion ever until her personal mystery was resolved and she could be written as a real human being at last. The story structure even does some mockery of that as we're led to believe the Doctor has been keeping tabs on her since her birth before we learn the truth of that opening scene. RTD finding an actress who honestly looks like an AI mashup of Coleman and Billie Piper took some getting used to, but by the end I was perfectly on board with her. As soon as we saw inside the goblin ship, my immediate thought was "Oh, this is going to play hell with Jess' claustrophobia," and as I write this before watching the reaction I just hope that wasn't too much of an issue. I'm sure I'm not the only one who really wants a pair of those gloves, and I just hope they don't get spammed too badly in the upcoming season. In the end, I'm left wondering: are Ruby's moms really going to freeze to death? Because there was a lot of emphasis on that for something that doesn't get resolved at the end. I'm now just hoping it ties into whatever the hell is up with Mrs. Flood, though I'd also be perfectly fine if that was just a random gag. RTD has even already said that's the case with the hand picking up the Toymaker's tooth with the Master, after all.

The Gallifreyan Rebel

As someone who was in foster care and then adopted, I just loved the representation of that in this episode, RTD handled it really well. I love how the Doctor and Ruby are both adopted and foundlings, they have such a great bond with each other.

Ryan

It's kind of weird that Chibnall never went with this angle, since he's adopted himself. It's already way more interesting in just one line than just using the Timeless Child as a pure lore dump.

Oh, no worries about not feeling at your best. I’ve been going through a peculiar spell today myself. I don’t know what it is, but I’ve been feeling it all day. I do hope, Jess, that you’ll be all better by the time your family visits to celebrate the holiday festivities. Now to the special. It is so nice to FINALLY have a Doctor Who Christmas Special again after Chibnall refused to ever do one. My expectation was that The Husbands of River Song is both my favorite Christmas Special, and favorite episode of Doctor Who, so it would be unlikely that this would dethrone that, hence my strategy that I told myself, which was just to have fun with it. And this was a fun Christmas Special as you said. Solid further introduction to our new Doctor. Only real thing that I knew going into it was who the new companion was. First impressions of Millie Gibson as Ruby were positive. I like her. Didn’t pick up on a theme or motif for her yet, though I’m sure that’ll become more apparent as we go on. She has a good rapport with the Doctor who was serving look after look; I quite enjoyed your sartorial commentary of this new Doctor’s many looks. First villains for a Doctor can be varied. Matt had a good one for his first hour as Eleven, and I loved the Half-Face Man who was Peter’s first opponent in his run as Twelve. Here, like you said, the villainous threat was not necessarily the most engaging threat, but that wasn’t necessarily the focus. Good music numbers though. Paused at the goblin singer’s name being Janis, I said, “Janis? As in... Janis...Goblin? ...Ok.” You mentioned it perhaps not being the best thing you vibing with a song about eating babies, to which, I note, “Maybe. My favorite Disney songs are the villain songs, so... Who am I to judge?” I liked Ruby’s family; her grandma was a treasure. I shared your reaction to the bad future where Ruby was taken. And the Doctor’s scenes in that have me particularly interested in Ncuti as the Doctor. I get he’ll likely primarily be a more lighthearted Doctor. I’m fine with that. I am saying that if he knocked that emotional scene out of the park as he did, then I look forward to such scenes in the future. Seriously, that sequence made me say, “Hoo. Ok. That got fucking real. Jesus.” Quite the gruesome end to the Goblin King. When you asked, “Are we going to have another jaunty music number?” I replied, “No, I think this time, we’ll just jump straight to the point.” I did love your protectiveness of Baby Ruby in that scene. There are also the further hints that we’ll more thoroughly tackle the Timeless Child plotline, which the way they’re tackling it does have my attention. And yes, a relief that the one lady was saved from the tree. Again, a fun Christmas Special that I’m glad you enjoyed. Yes, I have heard the next season will be in the Spring. Don’t know if that means before, at, or around my birthday. I hope it’s a little after as there’s something going on around, but not connected to my birthday that I might be behind on the season if that’s the case. But that’s my problem I suppose. I see the comment on Richard Franklin. Yeah, I heard about that. That was sad news to hear. Thank you, Jess, for the lovely reaction, and best of luck with the upcoming holiday festivities.

RTD said that the mystery of Mrs. Flood and Ruby's birth mom would be relevant for the following season(s). And the fandom went ballistic with theories on Twitter... xD (From "The Master" to "The Boss" (mentioned by The Meep) to an older River Song (how?)) Mrs. Flood is such a nice mystery! I can't wait for spring! ^^

It is curious to see how Davies will tackle a Moffat-type plot. Maybe it just speaks to Jenna and how much I loved Clara in that I never had a problem with her initial arc, though I do concede that her character did vastly improve once Peter arrived as Twelve, at which point, my love for Clara increased significantly. Didn’t have that thought of Millie Gibson looking like an AI mashup of Jenna and Billie Piper, though you say that, and I think, “Well... Maybe if I squint a little.” I’m steering clear of speculation about Mrs. Flood, though either outcome seems plausible. I’ll just wait to see how it plays out. And I agree with you on those gloves, by the way.

It's really crazy to think that Ruby was born just a few months before the 9th. Doctor met Rose! AND when 15 saved Baby Ruby, it was a week before 10 said goodbye to Rose before he regenerated... DAMN!

Nicole Mazza

Interesting. It felt like a clunky attempt at a clever Moffat plot to me. But obviously, YMMV. (Also, never thought that Clara was particularly 'generic', as I found her quite relatable. But again, it's all subjective)

Ian Smith

The BBC (UK) trailer for this Special took all of the silliest scenes with the goblins, and little else; the result was something that looked like a lot of cringe - which is why I had little urge to watch it on Xmas day. Having now seen it, it was actually far better than I expected. Gatwa was confident and assured (and, having already been introduced in the preceding episode, we were spared all of the usual "I'm not sure who I'm supposed to be!" routine). There was a pleasing atmosphere of ongoing and thoughtful mystery. The goblin sequences were kept to a bearable minimum; and Millie Gibson/Ruby Sunday was captivating! Altogether, not bad at all.

Ryan

The initial scene with the tree falling seemed to have a weirdly lighthearted tone for an innocent person's death, so I spent the rest of the episode hoping in the back of my mind that there was some twist coming with it. Nice to see that come through.

Mark McKeown

I've seen this come up a few times. I'm not sure if people are thinking Rose is her mother or are simply pointing out the dates are close.

Thomas Corp

I would imagine they’re simply pointing out the close proximity in dates. At least, I hope so.

Mark McKeown

Yeah because it makes zero sense otherwise. She travelled back to her original universe just to leave a baby at a church lol

Now, if Mrs Flood was a reincarnation of the Time Meddler, that would be an interesting addition or just another Time Meddler - as Hartnell said "You're a Time Meddler!", so not a definitive as The Doctor or The Rani.

Ryan

I’ve always been a bit baffled at how much people want the Rani back, since both her stories in the classic series suck. It’s not even like that’s any kind of controversial stance among the fans.

Josef Schiltz

Wasn't really the best actress for the role . . again! A very similar role to The Rani was taken up strongly by Juliet Aubrey in Primeval and she would have been a worthier adversary than Kate O'Mara. It just shows that casting plus writing is everything. BTW: Personally, I thought the stories weren't that good either, I just merely used the character as an example of a definitive because everyone else says The Master.

I'm glad then not to have seen the trailers. Couldn't resist the one that aired directly after the episode though.
