One of the biggest surprises of the show was an appearance by Hamato Xiono, who before this was only present in Resistance, the Star Wars animated series that no one cares about. If you haven't seen it, don't go out of your way; it's thoroughly mediocre and Xiono is only important as the main character's mostly unseen asshole father who he's rebelling against by joining Leia's resistance. And really, he didn't need to be here, as the point of his presence could easily just be done by some random other Senators acting, as Principal Skinner put it, "Do you want to act like the real UN, or do you just want to squabble and waste time?" (I swear I'm not deliberately referencing that show all the time, it just happens to fit a bunch of stuff recently) Jacen's appearance was especially good because the previous week, a bunch of people had completely freaked out and insisted his not appearing in the first two episodes was 100% confirmation that Filoni had forgotten about his existence and therefore clearly didn't care about these characters anymore, so this was a blast to throw in their faces. And I very much appreciate that this era continues to do its level best to incorporate the Force lore introduced by the prequels in a way more nuanced than "Only the people with an arbitrary high number of paramecium in their bodies can use it." Suck it, Abrams, we're sticking with anyone being a potential great Jedi!

First things first, I LOVE that print on your cardigan, Jess! Or top if cardigan is not the correct term. Yes, a shorter episode. Start by talking about the Hera portions of the episode. It got leaked that Genevieve O’Reilly would be returning as Mon Mothma. I’m with you on always loving seeing Genevieve in the role. You can tell that Mon is sympathetic to Hera’s requests, yet she can’t unilaterally overrule the committee without seeming like a dictator as the Emperor did. Not helping is the question, I don’t know an answer one way or another, mind you, but the question you raised of there could be someone on the committee with more nefarious schemes. Though as you note, I hold a similar thought, it’s unlikely to be the one fuckface asshole, Xiono. Said fuckface asshole, as Ryan noted is a pre-existing character. I’ve not seen him before, but I knew he was pre-existing as people talked about that. Judging by his appearance here, I think, “Ok, so, he’s a stand-in for Borsk Fey’lya, presumably.” I KNEW, Jess, he would get on your shit list. I anticipated your reaction to Xiono. When you yelled, “Who the FUCK are YOU!?” I noted, “Yeah, figured you’d say something like that.” He greatly angered me when he baited Hera with that smug smile on his stupid face, though good that Hera called out his cowardice, loved your reaction to that. I also loved your reaction to Jacen, who already has a lot of his father in him, and you know Hera’s thinking, “That’s what I’m afraid of.” Though Hera likely will get in a “I told you so” moment, for the moment, she has to put up with Xiono who unfortunately has a lot of pull. And trying to raise support from Xiono to combat the Imperial threat is like trying to raise the Titanic with tweezers. The training sequences were great, love your love of Huyang’s sass. You are correct pointing out about not being able to see, “Uh, Kanan did it!” leading me to dryly note, “Jess makes a good point there, Sabine.” Plus, a wise old man, used the technique with great success with Luke. Well, old is relative since my mom’s now older than Obi-Wan ever was, and my dad likewise outlived Obi-Wan by five years. So, compared to my parents, in a sense, he’s the younger man. It is intriguing how Ahsoka’s trying to teach Sabine as less the ideal Jedi, but rather the best her. You raise the valid point of not everybody has the luxury of learning at a leisurely pace. In Ahsoka’s case, she got thrown into the meat-grinder. The thing I think Ahsoka fails to realize, and it is a trap that lots of people fall into, is that she assumes that because she took to it like a fish takes to water, Sabine will as well. To her credit, she seems to realize she is falling into that trap, and changes gears some by asking Sabine what she needs. Either way, conventionality is not going to apply with the chain of Yoda taught Count Dooku who taught Qui-Gon who taught Ob-Wan who taught Anakin who taught Ahsoka who is now teaching Sabine. The space battle was fantastic. Love the villainous sass between Morgan and Shin. And there’s Baylan, sadly brief though his appearance in this episode is, whom we’ve seen his sass is more of a dry wit, and he also most excellently stares ominously. Loved your reaction to seeing live action purrgils. Tellingly the Inquisitor is a bit gob smacked by it. Which incidentally killed one major theory in its crib, yet fans refused to accept it, leading me to be the asshole saying, “Guys, I’m telling you those theories, or at least the one theory has gone up in smoke, crashed into a wall, and is no more. It has ceased to be.” To briefly talk, Jess, about how you related to frustrations and anxieties overwhelming you. I recall how you’ve spoken about how angry you can get at yourself in the past when neuroses and anxieties overwhelm you, hampering your ability to complete certain tasks. That’s me as well. The hatred towards myself runs deep when anxiety, neurosis, and frustrations run rampant; it’s not even funny anymore. It was never funny to begin with. Thank you, Jess, for another lovely Ahsoka reaction, and I am loving seeing how much you are loving this show.

As I said, I’ve not seen Resistance, though I was aware of Xiono being from that. I mention in my own comment that his role here feels much like Borsk Fey’lya from the Thrawn trilogy of old, who if you’re unaware, is the kind of asshole who acts much like Xiono does here, and is the kind of asshole who would vigorously complain mid-rescue to Luke and Leia, to the point that if I were in their shoes, I’d yell, “Will you shut up, for Christ’s sake! We just saved your goddamn life!” I don’t mind the repeated references to The Simpsons as, like you said, it continues to be quite applicable. I’m the same way with M*A*S*H at times as so much of that can apply to lots of things. I assumed Jacen would show up, hence my not being worried about it when he failed to put in an appearance in the first two episodes. People really freaked out about that? Jesus, people have zero fucking patience anymore. And I agree with you on appreciating that this this era continues to do its level best to incorporate the Force lore introduced by the Prequel Trilogy with greater nuance than the Sequel Trilogy. Which, I was overall fine with the Sequel Trilogy, still, like you’re saying, it could have used more nuance in certain areas.

And judging from how Xiono's written in Resistance, he learned absolutely nothing by being so catastrophically wrong here, which really makes me wonder if they have anything in mind after his story never really went anywhere on that show, since otherwise why even bother to bring him in? I highly doubt the seven people and a dog who actually watched Resistance were seen as a desirable audience to build into.

You know I wasn't overly fond of Huyang in the Clone Wars arc, but he's grown on me a lot in this series and David Tennant is fantastic in the role. Oh Filoni I know what you are doing; when Ahsoka mentions about Sabine trying out Zato(i)chi I knew what was coming. Zatoichi was a collection of films and series from Japan in the 60's and 70's (and there was also a fairly recent film featuring him) that followed a blind master swordsman, which dear old Dave is referencing here, that scamp! Even the mask Sabine puts on is a Kendo mask. Mind you Star Wars and the Jedi concept of bushido in which a warrior must go into battle without fear and be willing to die, has always been influenced by Japanese Samurai, Bushido and Buddhist culture. Even the coverings and bindings Ahsoka wears on her feet and legs are reminiscent of Samurai footwear, to give maximum balance and to keep quiet. Sabine knows that blindness wouldn't be an issue for someone strong in the force, as Kanan was her surrogate father and she saw what he was able to do once he got over his blindness, and in fact was then able to see further than he did when he had his vision. Of course she doesn't have the force to that level so is blocking herself as she doesn't believe yet she can do this. First time I believe in canon that we see Mon Mothma as Chancellor Of The New Republic, I was wondering if they were going to establish that, but it makes sense, especially with all the coverage she's had in Rebels, Rogue One and Andor in the last 7 or 8 years now. It seems like the more things change, the more they stay the same, and she's beginning to have her hands tied as what happened to Chancellor Valorum when Palpatine made his move for the Chancellorship. Senator Xiono is a dick, but at the same time he's also dealing with what he considers facts. However he is so close-minded and a microcosm of what will be the New Republic's downfall. Its pretty cool he's brought in here, to link up with the main character in Star Wars : Resistance, who is his son, down the line. Hera taking no prisoners in her discussion with the senators. She's hardened further now and doesn't want a repeat of what happened last time as she has lived through all that and knows these goings on have to be connecting somewhat to Thrawn returning. Jacen is a sweet kid. If he does start training to be a Jedi down the line, DON'T GO WITH LUKE!!! What would be fitting would be Ezra to train him, which would be so emotional to us. It sounds like he's been getting up to all sorts of nonsense with Chopper, why am I not surprised!! Ahsoka's message about the force to Sabine makes sense. Sabine might not have the talent to lift rocks or stop spaceships from flying off, but by opening herself to the force and training herself in it, will enable her to realise her potential. Ahsoka is trying to guide her on that path as she sees something in her, and she doesn't need to be Luke, Anakin or Yoda in the force to become that. Sabine wouldn't have been taught as a Jedi had the order still been around as Huyang brings up, but Ahsoka realises that its the principle of being what a Jedi should be thats important, not force power, though with training of course it can help her to see things beyond others. Its interesting that Huyang is with Ahsoka though, when he perhaps should be with Luke as he's about to set up his school. Luke represents the New Jedi Order though, like Ezra, a Knight who has been taught after the fall of the order. Ahsoka and Huyang are from the old order and perhaps are looking to get back to what the Jedi were. Luke is free to choose what his order will look like, though to me both he and Ahsoka represent the best of the Jedi, even when she isn't one technically now, and he will fail. At this time however no one is to know that and both Luke and Ahsoka are doing their own thing even if I don't think Ahsoka's goal is to restore the Jedi Order. I love the vibes Shin is giving off, there is something a bit off about her, but whether she is a darksider yet is to be truly determined. The girls eye-rolling at Huyang telling them to get closer to the hyperspace ring. They should be used to stuff like this working with two of the best pilots in the galaxy in Anakin and Hera. ;) Also its not the first time Ahsoka has fought in space, as we saw in the Clone Wars. :D The Purgils look amazing in live action! Kevin Kiner even brought their theme to the party too, love it!

Initial feelings towards Huyang were lukewarm to poisitive, though yeah, his role here does improve the opinion of him. I caught that about the Zatoichi reference. Strong samurai influences throughout the series. Even without the Force, the training whilst being unable to see would be beneficial in heightening other senses. This is the first time in live action where we see Mon Mothma as Chancellor. Both continuities, she becomes Chancellor. The show just assumes the audience knew that going in. She is trying to restore a Valorum era Republic, without the corruption. As we can see, easier said than done. Yeah, Xiono’s up there on disliked Star Wars characters. Good observation of him dealing with what he considers facts. Perception of reality becomes reality. I could see Jacen training with Ezra. I know the fans fear him going to train with Luke. Of course he’s gotten into fun with Chopper. Lots of interesting observations on the Force. Good thought on why Huyang is with Ahsoka rather than Luke. Shin has a great vibe. Yeah, the purrgils were quite majestic.
