The thing I most look forward to in this show is interactions between two characters who are never able to meet in the sacred timeline. And this one’s another banger, showing real thought into the best person for Hela to run into if she got the Thor treatment at this point. The downside is that it’s way too early for Trevor Slattery to show up (just imagine acting legends Cate Blanchett and Ben Kingsley working together as these super campy characters!), but we at least get Morris. I had serious doubts that they could pull off a Hela redemption in just 30 minutes, but somehow they did it. It helps that the requirement is specifically about mercy rather than an all-encompassing “being worthy,” and you have an A-list talent like Cate Blanchett getting to show a whole new side to a character who’d just been a simple villain, reminiscent of Tobin Bell in Saw X. I do question a bit if even the more ruthless Odin of this time would go so far that he could act as a concrete “final boss” for Hela’s redemption, but at least they show he still has good in him too and can be talked around, rather than taking the easy way out. The end result is another team I wouldn’t mind seeing future adventures from, and it’s kind of a shame Uatu hadn’t yet looked in on them when Infinity Ultron was becoming a problem, as they probably would have been all he needed.

Man, Jess, it got me emotional seeing how emotional and obsessed you were with the plot of this one. This whole season was fantastic and is yielding most marvelous reactions. It’s great. Our dear Cate is one of the most CRIMINALLY underutilized actors in the MCU, so it’s nice to have a Hela centric episode to allow Cate the time to shine. I kind of liked it too, her dialogue in this felt more like Taika’s usual humor as Hela was more serious in Ragnarök than the rest of the cast. There was concern on my part as I haven’t seen Shang-Chi yet, though I recognized the Mandarin. I also do know two spoilers for that, one I heard at work, another I heard elsewhere, though I don’t know how big said spoilers are. From what I gathered however, the episode takes place before that film, thus I wasn’t lost. I did ask for some clarification, “Something I should know about with this episode; what am I missing if anything?” and I was told that thematic parallels aside, nothing was in this episode that would be befuddling if I hadn’t seen Shang-Chi. As you observed, the highlight is seeing Hela go through the redemption arc. Striking when she is unable to lift and claim the spiky helmet of death, darkness, and doom. I watched that part with probably the same expression that Coulson had during that scene in Thor. I liked your comments on Hela having to combat her natural impulses in order to learn and grow. I could definitely see how much you loved the ending of this episode. As I said, it overwhelmed me some, saying, “Goddamn, is Jess hitting me right in the heart with this one!” I so adored this reaction, Jess, and I am loving seeing how much you are loving this season of What If?... Thank you for another lovely reaction.

A big highlight of the show is yes, seeing characters that never crossed paths in the Sacred Timeline interacting with each other in these terrific plots. Between the writing and Cate being Cate, the show does a phenomenal job of having Hela’s redemption in such a short amount of time without feeling too brief and/or rushed in any way. That the requirement is specifically about mercy does lend to helping as well. This is another of a few worlds in this season that I would love to revisit. Even if it never happens in the show itself, I’d take books or comics about it. Tis a shame Uatu didn’t try to recruit the team of Hela and the Mandarin to fight Infinity Ultron; they’d have got shit fucking done real goddamn quick.

The faceless groundhog-like spirit is also in Shang Chi, where it's named Morris (and couldn't be named that here because the character who came up with it is a long way from being born), and was that year's big "You should see this movie to understand why your kids are talking about wanting this thing."
