Hey, Ex-military here, from a military family; I just wanted to say about the Lt Jee thing: Lt Jee is an officer and a full Lt, and this is a small vessel that would normally be "captained" by a Lt Cmdr or a Cmdr. Zuko would get more honours paid to him being a royal. Still, his rank would be within like two of Lt Jee, which is normally close enough in most militaries to gossip between as long as it is behind closed doors and the gossip is not about the supervisor of one of the people. They call this keeping it in your mess. Cmdr Zhao is not part of their chain of command; he is a peer to them at this point. He starts to pull away with the ranks of Captain and Admiral, but at that point, they are both subordinate to him within a close rank. Badmouthing Zhao would probably be socially acceptable. Zuko is just overly rigid, which makes sense in his situation and in following the lines of Iroh.

Bending definitely had mental aspects in the original. There is an entire episode about Zuko losing his power by switching sides and gaining insights from the dragons!
