Hi,

today I set up the final scene for SJX 1.40 which was part of the ending!

I'll proceed to integration test tomorrow, linking in assets and replacing animation low rez placeholders with hi rez renders as I go. BETA should be available on 12th.

Only code to be fiddled with is the end credits (trying to get a smooth scroll done but maybe just do blending over the credits. Also received the commissioned end credits musical score which I really like. Everything coming together now.EDIT: There's an end credit test game in the Beta channel including end credit musical score for testers who want to check it out

I started SJX in November 2022 and now, around 1.5 years later the Game is nearing completion!

No worries, two expansions will come after 1.40 with a full wrap up around end of this year. After all we want to know what those shifty Krell are up to...

Thanks a lot for the support so far and I am looking forward to releasing 1.40 Early Access Versions in July.

What will be next after SJX? Any particular tropes you are thinking of?

y.v.

I am not fully sure what should be next. - I have half a mind of learning a new engine (Godot), in that case it would be sth with less scope that lends itself to that engine (brothel management with idle top down playstyle comes to mind). - If I stick with Renpy I'll probably do a Magical School / HP themed game. In that case I would like to change out the 3D tools, dump DAZ Studio and go fully to Blender (also for the characters). I still have time to think about that while I do the Expansion 1.50 to SJX, titled "Adventures in Krell Space"

Question for the expansions after 1.40: Will the saves still be incompatible? Or will they be more "stand-alone"?

y.v.

I have not found a technical way to achieve save compatibility across versions that have new functional content. Thats rooted in how renpy handles control flow and save-anywhere capability of renpy. Only way to achieve compatibility would be to disable renpy save mechanism and e.g. autosave over night only. PPl would hate that so its not a real choice. TLDR: Sadly no, but the MV Pods / save point resume mechanism like now is a kind of imperfect workaround.

Rusik Robochevsky

How about expanding the capability of the MV pods, to let you export the entire game state in a format that can be imported in a future version?

y.v.

It is not a data problem but a control flow problem. It is virtually impossible to reconcile all save states of version x-1 to the call hierarchies of version x. So forwarding some data via a pod is fine, but mapping the control flow hierarchy across versions will only work if I prohibit save anywhere. "This is beyond any craft which I possess..." ;)

I like your games, and you have skill in making games that both play well and make sense. I would looove a management game from you cause, despite being a popular enough theme, everybody keeps doing it wrong!

Rusik Robochevsky

What if the export/import was limited to the start of the day only, and possibly only when docked at a station. Then there wouldn't be much control flow active, would there?

y.v.

maybe, but Renpy's save everywhere works phenomenally well and the vast majority of players would hate to lose save flexibility. So I would (with immense work overhead as you have to keep your calls numbered throughout the code at all times!) just exchange one group of players who dislike an aspect of the game with another group. That is a lose/lose. Besides it would cost me half a year to develop the coding tools to manage code flow/label management. I would even bet it can be proven mathematically that you cannot have full code design / flow flexibility and consistent save game reconciliation with new versions for all older configuration savegames. I would probably rather give up sw development alltogether than open this can of worms... :(

y.v.

Well things that could indeed be added to that feature is the transfer of the entire ship configuration so that you do not have to manually bring up your ship to scratch after each new game. That would be a quality of life feature that's technically possible.

SharK_IN_A_Chair

think you will try a less sandbox VN this time ?

y.v.

Linear VN are not what I personally like to play so if my next game is renpy it will be a sandbox. If it is Godot it will be a bit smaller (to learn), might be a sim or a crawler of some kind
