Chapter #5: Stress reliever.
Harry yawned as he left the "Defense Against the Dark Arts" classroom. Moody, the former Auror and Dumbledore’s friend, who has been hired to teach the class this year, decided to make things fun by practicing the unforgivables in front of Neville Longbottom, who was on the verge of collapsing.
It made sense, though, it is said that Voldemort and his followers tortured his parents with the cruciatus curse before he killed them, which somehow ended up with Voldemort and his followers losing their lives.
Moody also used the Imperius curse on Neville, Harry didn’t know what the professor was expecting to happen, there’s no way anyone could shake off the effects of that curse, and today that was proven to be right, as the professor made Longbottom act in the way he hadn't done before, he was confident.
It was just a fabrication from Moody, it was so interesting to see the usually meek student who supposedly saved the world as a baby. Harry was expecting to see if Moody would use the killing curse on Neville, and it happened, but not in the way Harry expected.
Turns out that if you don’t mean to kill anyone, the curse by itself doesn’t do anything, you need to feel it deep within your body if you truly want to kill anyone, it was such a disappointment, Harry was expecting to see a dead body at the end of the class, but that didn’t happen.
“Leave me, I don’t need your pity!” Harry heard Neville say to Hermione, who was trying to be nice after that awful experience.
Harry couldn’t help but snicker, just as he expected, once he got a bit of praise for something that wasn’t related to a dark wizard, it seemed like Longbottom's ego had skyrocketed to a point at which he forgot where he came from.
Everyone was staring at Hermione with awkward expressions, Slytherins who were on their way to take their defense class were laughing at her, and she was trying her best to let the tears fall down her face. Harry hated to see her like that, but he told her that the Neville she knew was going to be absent for some time, and yet, she didn’t believe him.
Still, even if it would be satisfying to tell her that he was right, instead, he got close to her and smiled at her, and she weakly smiled back at him.
“I know what you’re going to say—” Hermione was stopped by Harry.
“Forget about it, Hermione, why don’t we go to our meeting place and continue searching through the books to see if we can find something useful?” He offered to help her.
It took a few moments for her to see what his intentions were, but once she did, she happily nodded and took his hand, five minutes later, and they were in the room of requirement once again.
“I can’t believe I’m so weak!” Hermione complained. “He has shown a side he has never shown, and yet, I’m still trying to be his friend!” She said as she slammed her books on a couch.
Harry just looked at her with a calm expression as he heard.
“I wish I could be like you, Harry, you may look ruthless, but in reality, you’re more practical…” She said with a defeated tone.
Harry hated seeing her like this, so he pointed his wand at her, which caused her to open her eyes as wide as she could.
“Harry, I didn’t mean to offend you, I—please, don’t kill me—” she was quickly stopped.
“When I’m angry, I like to practice with my wand, there’s nothing more therapeutic and relaxing than throwing spells, let’s have a duel!” He offered her, with a wide grin plastered all over his face.
Hermione was a bit taken aback by his suggestion but considering how much physical and mental abilities a magical duel requires, she knew he was right to feel this was some kind of stress reliever, she was a bit hesitant, but in the end, she accepted the duel.
“There’s only one rule, Hermione, and this rule is the same when you face an enemy, the duel is over once you lose your wand, we start when I say the number three,” Harry explained, and she nodded. “Three!” He exclaimed and soon, he shot a few electrical spells on the ground, close to her feet.
This caused the bookworm to stumble, she was taken aback by the sudden attacks, it’s clear that Harry wasn’t fighting honorably, she wanted to be angry, but she knew that in the real world, there’s no honor when it comes to protecting your life.
It took her a few moments to walk normally, it was difficult because the floor was now charged, so she needed to know where to step to not get hurt, Harry smirked at her.
“I must admit I’m impressed, Hermione, this trick barely failed to get my rivals to yield this last summer,” he said with a grin.
“Your rivals?” Hermione questioned with a concerned expression.
“Well, money has been tight for me, Hermione, I don’t live with my uncles anymore, and my inheritance is gone, I’ve been participating in illegal underground battles,” he explained with a smirk.
She had grown more concerned right now.
“Relax, Hermione…I’m still undefeated, it’s clear that my abilities aren’t that bad…How are yours?” Harry didn’t even wait for her to answer.
Instead, he launched a wind attack, and soon many papers were flying across the room, causing Hermione to get a bit disconnected because her hair was covering her eyes most of the time due to the wind, she needed to find a way to counterattack him, so, she started to shoot fire spells to at least clear the view.
This caused the papers to logically get burned, and now she was getting worried that her actions could cause a fire and destroy all the important books stored here, the thought of losing endless knowledge was her true weakness.
“Yield!” Harry said now that he was behind her, his wand pressed against her back.
Hermione raised her hands, and Harry smirked.
“Expeliarmus!” Hermione decided to surprise Harry, whose eyes opened wide.
Surprisingly, she managed to throw him against a bookshelf, and many books fell on his body, but seeing him in one piece made Hermione grin, she was satisfied with what she had done.
She decided to follow him, she wanted to brag about her victory, but once she was in front of him, she was surprised to find him on the floor with a smug expression.
“Sorry, Hermione, but…I still have my wand!” He surprised her.
And before she could do or say anything, he gently disarmed her, now her wand was in his possession. She sighed but smiled, just like he promised, this has been fun.
“Good fight, Harry, are you hurt?” Hermione wanted to help him.
However, Harry was focused on one of the books that fell on his body, he was looking at it as if his life depended on it.
“Harry…What’s the book all about?” Asked the brown-haired witch.
“No…There’s no way that…” Harry said with a horrified tone.
“Harry…What is it?!” Hermione questioned with a concerned tone.
“It is said that magic…It was a muggle creation,” he told her with a shocked tone.
“Must be a work of fiction, let me see,” Hermione grabbed the book.
She was skeptical, but after checking out some pages, she realized that thing was making sense somehow, this was weird.
